Colovesical fistulas originating from complicated sigmoid diverticular disease are rare. The primary aim of this review was to evaluate the role of laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of this complication. The secondary aim was to determine the best surgical treatment for this disease. Three cases of small bowel diverticula are presented. In the first patient perforation of a congenital diverticulum in pars II of the duodenum occurred, the second case is the first description of bezoar in a duodenal diverticulum with bleeding of the diverticulum at the same time and the third patient suffered from ileus due to unusually large jejunal diverticulum. Up to 20% of all autopsied patients present duodenal diverticula. In other parts of small bowel diverticula are not as frequent. Most cases are asymptomatic and require no treatment. We present our experience with 431 patients suffering from diverticular disease. Indications for emergency and elective surgery are given. Immediate laparatomy is mandatory for severe diverticular bleeding, bowel obstruction and sigmoid perforation. Aggressive surgical management is appropriated for purulent and fecal peritonitis. Resection of the perforated sigmoid colon by the Hartmann procedure is the method of choice and helps to reduce mortality markedly. The authors give an account of twelve cases of inflammatory acute abdominal attacks which complicated the course after abdominal operations. Although rare complications are involved, they are very serious and to a certain extent instructive. In the conclusion the authors summarize some diagnostic, therapeutic and assessment rules for these uncommon situations.

Meckel's diverticula were removed from 49 adult patients during a 15 year period. In 24 (49 per cent) of the patients the diverticulum was the cause of symptoms while in the remaining 25 it was an incidental finding at laparotomy.
