A resume of the main uses of echography in obstetrics and gynaecology in a private practice is presented. The procedure is a simple, atraumatic one, without danger of X-radiation to the fetus or the hazard of angiography to the patient, and can be repeated without risk. It has a high degree of accuracy, as well as being a very useful aid, to gynaecologists and general practitioners alike, whenever there is doubt in the clinical assessment, or for confirmation of any underlying complication.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the risk of fetal loss attributable to cordocentesis at midgestation.
STUDY DESIGN: A cohort study was conducted during the period 1989-1999. Women undergoing cordocentesis between 16 and 24 weeks' gestation with singleton pregnancies without obvious fetal anomaly were recruited into the study group. The control subjects were selected prospectively on a one-to-one basis with strict matching for maternal age, parity, gestational age at recruitment, and socioeconomic status. Both groups were prospectively followed up until delivery.
RESULTS: A tot

Among the abnormal cord insertion pathology, velamentous cord insertion associated with rupture of vasa praevia is the most severe condition related to the outcome of the newborn. In velamentous cord insertion, the fetal vessels run freely through the fetal membranes without protection from Wharton's jelly, umbilical vessels diverging as they traverse the membranes. When the membranes are ruptured, complete tearing of fetal vessels through the torn membranes or partial rupture near the site of membrane rupture may occur. Velamentous insertion occurs in approximately 1% of singleton gestations,

A critical tool in the successful management of patients with abnormal placentation is an established massive transfusion protocol designed to rapidly deliver blood products in obstetrical and surgical hemorrhage. Spurred by trauma research and an understanding of consumptive coagulopathy, the past 2 decades have seen a shift in volume resuscitation from an empiric, crystalloid-based method to balanced, targeted transfusion therapy. The present article reviews patient blood management in abnormal placentation, beginning with optimizing the patient's status in the antenatal period to the labora
