The present study was an attempt to investigate the hepatoprotective and antioxidative property of Phyllanthus amarus (P. amarus) extract and phyllanthin. Phyllanthin, one of the active lignin present in this plant species was isolated from the aerial parts, by silica gel column chromatography employing gradient elution with hexane-ethyl acetate solvent mixture. Time-resolved spectroscopy measurements of LiF:Mg,Cu,P luminescence are presented to obtain a better understanding of the emission characteristics of this material. The intensities and decay of the emission bands were studied as a function of annealing temperature and ionising radiation (gamma) dose. Described is a method for the determination of orotic acid as its methyl ester in human urine. The method involves the use of solid-phase extraction to isolate pyrimidines from urine and derivatization with methanol and sulfuric acid, followed by isocratic high-performance liquid chromatography on a reversed-phase C18 column with UV absorbance detection. The assay is shown to be sufficiently sensitive for use in clinical investigations where elevated orotic acid excretion is suspected.

Random urine samples from 614 neonates were screened for metabolites of purine and pyrimidine metabolism using an adapted column chromatographic method. A restricted number of metabolites and a number of unidentified peaks appeared on the chromatograms. No inborn errors of this metabolism were found.
