[Muculoskeletal radiology: ankle and foot in adults].

The main views and indications in adult foot and ankle radiography are detailed. Among foot and ankle diseases, mechanical ones are most frequent, including usual podologic changes (commonly followed by peculiar involvement of certain bones, ligaments, joints, tendons and other soft tissues), synostoses, occult and stress fractures, sprains, and tendon changes. Although they are less frequently encountered in common clinical practice, the radiographic appearance of inflammatory, infectious, and tumoral diseases of foot and ankle are disclosed as well. The correlation existing between some subt

Management of uncomplicated ankle sprains with topical or oral ketoprofen treatment. A registry study.

Ankle sprains mainly caused by accidents or strenuous sport activities can often be quite painful and impair motility. If not treated immediately and correctly, sprains may lead to severe complications. The aim of the present study was to compare the efficacy and safety of topically applied ketoprofen versus orally administered ketoprofen in 20 patients with grade I ankle sprain and 34 patients with grade II sprain. The patients were divide into in two treatment groups and received either topically applied ketoprofen treatment (ketoprofen 10% spray-gel; Prontoflex; 360 mg/die) or orally admini

Comfrey extract ointment in comparison to diclofenac gel in the treatment of acute unilateral ankle sprains (distortions).

A previously published study comparing the efficacy of comfrey extract to a commercial diclofenac (CAS 78213-16-8) preparation in the treatment of unilateral ankle sprains is critically re-evaluated. The study was designed to show non-inferiority of the comfrey extract. The data were re-evaluated for superiority according to CPMP guidelines. The study was an observer-blind, randomised, multi-centre clinical trial with two independent treatment groups "comfrey extract" and "diclofenac gel" (parallel group design) and included a total of 164 patients (82 in the comfrey group and 82 in the diclof

Posterior approach for arthroscopic treatment of posterolateral impingement syndrome of the ankle in a top-level field hockey player.

A case history of a 25-year-old field hockey player, a member of the German National Field Hockey Team, is presented. The patient could not remember any specific ankle injury, but since the World Indoor Championship in February 2003, he experienced significant but diffuse pain around the posterior ankle, especially while loading the forefoot in hockey training and competition. For 2 months, the patient was unable to run. Conservative treatment failed, and surgery was performed. Posterior ankle arthroscopy revealed a frayed posterior intermalleolar ligament and meniscoid-like scar tissue at the

Neer Award 2001: nonrecoverable strain fields of the anteroinferior glenohumeral capsule under subluxation.

Although tears of the glenohumeral capsule have been observed in anteroinferior instability, prefailure, nonrecoverable deformation is suspected but has not been shown to exist after shoulder subluxation. The inferior glenohumeral ligament in the anteroinferior capsule (AIC) is a primary stabilizer in anteroinferior instability. The aim of this study was to examine the nonrecoverable strain field of the AIC due to shoulder subluxation. Nonrecoverable strains were calculated between a nominal strain state and a postsubluxed state. AIC marker coordinates were reconstructed from stereoradiographs

Intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors for muscle strains in Australian football.

Muscle strains are common injuries in Australian football and other sports involving sprinting. Between 1992 and 1999, 83,503 player-matches in the Australian Football League were analyzed for risk of muscle strain injuries using logistic regression analysis. There were 672 hamstring, 163 quadriceps, and 140 calf muscle strain injuries. All three types of muscle strains were associated with significant risk factors. For all injuries, the strongest risk factor was a recent history of that same injury and the next strongest risk factor was a past history of the same injury. History of one type o

Effect of a semi-rigid ankle stabilizer on performance in persons with functional ankle instability.

STUDY DESIGN: Within-group repeated measures. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of a semi-rigid prophylactic ankle stabilizer (PAS) on performance of subjects with post-acute, unilateral ankle sprains who have mechanically stable ankles, but are functionally impaired. BACKGROUND: Most studies on PAS performance to date are limited to subjects with noninjured, nonimpaired ankles. No research has been reported to determine the effect PASs have on performance in subjects who have a mechanically stable, nonacute ankle sprain with functional impairment. METHODS AND MEASURES: Twenty-five subjec

Injury patterns in recreational rock climbers.

We studied 39 recreational rock climbers to determine the incidence and pattern of injuries sustained in the sport at their level. Eleven climbers (26%), who climbed beyond the sport level, had sustained a major injury from a fall. Thirty-five climbers (89%) sustained at least one significant injury. Fifty percent of the injuries involved the hand or wrist. Only seven climbers (19%) had evidence of a digital pulley injury (climber's finger). Four climbers (11%) had evidence of a carpal tunnel syndrome. Twenty climbers (50%) had tendinitis in an upper extremity on physical examination.

Early mobilization versus immobilization in the treatment of lateral ankle sprains.

We conducted a prospective trial at a military medical center to determine which treatment for first-time ankle sprains, early mobilization or immobilization, is more effective. Eighty-two patients with a lateral ankle sprain were randomly selected for one of two treatment groups. The Early Mobilization Group received an elastic wrap for 2 days followed by functional bracing for 8 days. Two days after injury, this group began weight-bearing and an ankle rehabilitation program. Patients in the Immobilization Group were placed in a nonweight-bearing plaster splint for 10 days followed by weight-

Sports-related injuries in elderly men still active in sports.

By means of a questionnaire with a complementary interview and physical examination, the site and nature of sports injuries were investigated over a 10-year period (1977-1987) in 97 elderly athletes (age range 70-81 years). The athletes were still active in training and competition with a mean competition background of 15 years. Of the subjects studied 30 were strength/power athletes and the remaining 67 endurance athletes. Altogether we found 273 sports-related injuries (169 acute and 104 overuse injuries). Of the injuries 75% had occurred in the lower extremities. The most commonly injured p
