Several drugs are available for mass campaigns against enteric helminths. Mebendazole and pyrantel pamoate are quite effective against ascariasis and reasonably effective against the hookworms. Only mebendazole is effective against trichuriasis. Two drugs have recently been introduced for mass therapy of schistosomiasis, but they remain experimental, pending further evaluation. Other drugs are mentioned, and possible adverse metabolic effects are discussed. The fundamental question remaining is whether the eradication of certain parasites will improve the nutritional status of the infected pop

Adoptive transfer of immunity against the enteral phase of Strongyloides ratti was monitored using four parameters; namely, number of worms recovered, position occupied in the host's small intestine, worm length and fecundity. When immune mesenteric lymph node cells (IMLNC) were transferred from donors infected for 20, 26 or 32 days into recipients infected for 3 days, a marked acceleration of worm expulsion was evident by day 16 post-infection (p.i.). IMLNC from day-16 p.i. donors did not transfer expulsion. In an experiment in which recipients were given 2 x 10(8) or 1 x 10(8) IMLNC from don

Parasitic infections constitute an important group of zoonoses. Stool examination of inpatients, medical examinees and out-patients in a sub-tropical environment established that Inermicapsifer madagascariensis and Schistosoma mattheei are occasionally anthropozoonotic in Zambia. Strongyloides fülleborni, a species normally parasitic in primates is not uncommon in man; whether it is anthropozoonotic or a parasite well adapted to man in this part of Africa needs further investigation. The finding of unidentified spiruroid ova was considered to be due to a spurious infection. The need for the di

In a survey of 259 newly-imported rhesus monkeys, 5 species of nematode parasites were commonly found. Of these 5 species, Oesophagostomum spp. and Strongyloides fulleborni were implicated in the deaths of 3 monkeys. 5 other nematode species, 2 cestode species and 1 trematode species were also found; their pathogenicity is discussed. The results of treatment of parasitic infections with 6 different drugs is reported. Thiabendazole at an initial dose of 100 or 133 mg/kg and repeated at 50 mg/kg was found to be the most effective treatment against Oesophagostomum spp.

Various forms of voluntary migration have been and remain among the leading causes of the worldwide dispersal of parasites. Although helminthic infections are common in Africa, they are rare in Israel, making diagnosis challenging for many clinicians. We present 22 years of experience diagnosing under-recognized, long-lasting helminthic infections in migrants from African countries: Strongyloides stercoralis (up to 24 years), Schistosoma mansoni (up to 15 years), and hookworm (up to 12 years).

BACKGROUND: The WHO guideline for the public health control of Strongyloides stercoralis recommends the deployment of Baermann or agar plate culture to estimate the infection prevalence. However, the guideline includes the possible use of antibody-based assays, which might be preferred in some countries. An ELISA based on two recombinant antigens (Strongy Detect ELISA by InBios), performed on dried blood spots (DBS), demonstrated suitable for use in a diagnostic study carried out in remote areas of Ecuador ("ESTRELLA"). A new version of that assay, which aimed at improving specificity accordin

Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted helminth capable of lifelong persistence through autoinfection, placing individuals with latent infection at risk during immunosuppression. Although corticosteroids are recognized triggers for hyperinfection and dissemination, population-level data quantifying these risks remain limited. We conducted a multicentre retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network. Adults with laboratory-confirmed latent Strongyloides infection (positive IgG serology) were included, while patients with active disease were excluded. Corticos

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of helminth infections exhibits an inverse association with the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and helminths are postulated to mediate a protective effect against T2DM. However, the biological mechanism behind this effect is not known.
AIMS/METHODS: We postulated that helminth infections act by modulating the pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine milieu that is characteristic of T2DM. To examine the association of cytokines and chemokines in helminth-diabetes co-morbidity, we measured the plasma levels of a panel of pro-inflammatory cytokines and c

Parasitic helminths are sensed by the immune system via tissue-derived alarmins that promote the initiation of the appropriate type 2 immune responses. Here we establish the nuclear alarmin cytokine IL-33 as a non-redundant trigger of specifically IL-9-driven and mast cell-mediated immunity to the intestinal parasite Strongyloides ratti. Blockade of endogenous IL-33 using a helminth-derived IL-33 inhibitor elevated intestinal parasite burdens in the context of reduced mast cell activation while stabilization of endogenous IL-33 or application of recombinant IL-33 reciprocally reduced intestina

BACKGROUND: Parasites excrete and secrete a wide range of molecules that act as the primary interface with their hosts and play critical roles in establishing parasitism during different stages of infection. Strongyloides venezuelensis is a gastrointestinal parasite of rats that is widely used as a laboratory model and is known to produce both soluble and insoluble (adhesive) secretions during its parasitic stages. However, little is known about the constituents of these secretions.
RESULTS: Using mass spectrometry, we identified 436 proteins from the infective third-stage larvae (iL3s) and 1

Data from recent studies support the hypothesis that infections by human gastrointestinal (GI) helminths impact, directly and/or indirectly, on the composition of the host gut microbial flora. However, to the best of our knowledge, these studies have been conducted in helminth-endemic areas with multi-helminth infections and/or in volunteers with underlying gut disorders. Therefore, in this study, we explore the impact of natural mono-infections by the human parasite Strongyloides stercoralis on the faecal microbiota and metabolic profiles of a cohort of human volunteers from a non-endemic are

In dogs, information on treatments against S. stercoralis infection is rare and anecdotal. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the treatment outcome of S. stercoralis natural infection in sheltered dogs. Furthermore, based on the potential risk of infection, people working in the infected shelter were also tested. Seventeen sheltered dogs positive to S. stercoralis using the Baermann test were treated with ivermectin 200 μg/kg/sid/os for two consecutive days. Only two dogs showed clinical signs suggestive of strongyloidiasis (diarrhea, weigh loss) at diagnosis. All dogs showed consiste…

The aim was to correlate the gastrointestinal transit profile in rats, evaluated by a biomagnetic technique, in response to infection with different loads of Strongyloides venezuelensis. Eggs per gram, intestinal number of worms and fecundity, and also gastric emptying time, cecum arrival time, small intestinal transit time and stool weight were determined. Assessments occurred at 0 (control), 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 21 days post infection (dpi) with three infective loads (400, 2000, and 10,000 L). Gastric emptying was faster (p=0.0001) and the intestinal transit was significantly slower (p=0.
