Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Adherence and HIV Self-Testing App Among Women in the South Bronx: 12-Month Usability, Acceptability, and Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is underused by cis- and transgender women despite a significant HIV burden. Smartphone technologies are promising tools to support HIV prevention but have yet to be assessed in women. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a 12-month feasibility study to assess the use and acceptability of a mobile phone app, SmartPrEP, designed to support PrEP adherence and HIV self- and partner-testing among women living in an area of elevated HIV burden in New York City. METHODS: Nonpregnant adult cisgender and transgender women who met US PrEP eligibility criteria and we

Ethnoracial inequities in social stressors and patterns of alcohol use in a population of United States transgender Veterans.

BACKGROUND: Due to marginalization, transgender and people of color living in the United States (U.S.) experience disparities in social determinants of health and mental health outcomes. Evidence suggests that applying an intersectional analysis among U.S. transgender Veterans of color would reveal disparities in social stressors and alcohol use outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This project sought to examine patterns of social stressors and alcohol use among ethnoracial groups of transgender Veterans receiving care in the Veterans Health Administration (VA). METHODS: Data from electronic health records

Gender-affirming facial surgery in racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse individuals: Variations and consistencies in procedures and outcomes in a large cohort.

BACKGROUND: Gender-affirming facial surgery (GAFS) is an integral part of the gender-affirming care continuum, but access to surgery is limited, and only 7% of transgender women have undergone GAFS. The intersection of race/ethnicity and insurance coverage significantly impacts access to GAFS. Many insurance plans exclude GAFS, and a vast majority of GAFS operations in the United States have been performed on White patients. Accordingly, there are limited data on GAFS in diverse individuals. METHODS: A retrospective chart review identified transgender women who underwent GAFS at the Universit

Cardiometabolic Risk Assessment in Transgender Individuals-Differential Effect of Sex Hormones and Sex Chromosomes.

CONTEXT: While transgender individuals represent a substantial group seeking medical care, the differential effect of sex on cardiometabolic risk metrics is incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to characterize the effect of sex hormones and chromosomes on a contemporary panel of cardiometabolic risk biomarkers and functional cardiovascular measurements. METHODS: A total of 17 transgender men and 17 transgender women were studied at baseline (T0), 4 weeks (hormonal castration, T1), and 11 months following gender-affirming hormone treatment (T12). We analyzed carotid int

Acceptability of broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) for HIV prevention among vulnerable populations in India: Findings from a qualitative study.

With newer advances in HIV biomedical research, the prevention toolbox is expanding with potential inclusion of long-acting anti-retrovirals, broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs), and vaccines. While a multitude of prevention options provide diverse choice sets, they may potentially introduce conundrums and trade-offs which influence end-user decisions on acceptability. Thus, to maximize the unique value and uptake of new products, it is critical to understand contextual drivers of choice and relative product positioning. With HIV bNAbs in the pipeline, a qualitative study was conducted to

Randomized Controlled Trial Testing an HIV/STI Prevention Intervention Among People Leaving Incarceration Who Were Assigned Male at Birth, Have Sex with Men and A Substance Use Disorder.

HIV disproportionately impacts minoritized individuals, particularly those of intersectional minoritized identities. Incarceration disproportionately impacts minoritized individuals as well, and increases HIV risk, in part due to its disruption to people's lives, social networks, and access to care. We developed MEPS, a 6-month intervention designed to holistically support HIV prevention in men who have sex with men and transgender women leaving incarceration. We tested MEPS in a 1:1 randomized controlled trial with 208 individuals. All participants received a needs assessment and personalized

Preferences for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among men who have sex with men and trans women in 15 countries and territories in Asia and Australia: a discrete choice experiment.

INTRODUCTION: Scaling up pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) in the Asia-Pacific region has been slow. We identified the drivers of PrEP use and forecasted PrEP uptake given different PrEP programmes for MSM and TGW living in 15 countries and territories in Asia and Australia. METHODS: Separate online discrete choice experiment surveys for MSM and TGW were distributed in 15 Asian countries and territories and Australia between May and November 2022. We used random parameters logit models to estimate the relative importance

The persistent chasm between PrEP awareness and uptake: characterizing the biomedical HIV prevention continuum in a nationwide cohort of transgender women in the United States and Puerto Rico.

INTRODUCTION: Transgender (trans) women are disproportionately impacted by HIV, yet data on the biomedical HIV PrEP continuum (HIVPC) among trans women are limited. We characterized the HIVPC among a large, nationwide cohort of trans women in the United States and Puerto Rico by pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) modality (daily oral and long-acting injectable, LAI) and identified correlates of uptake and non-adherence. METHODS: From April 2023 to December 2024, we enrolled English and Spanish-speaking adult trans women (age 18 years or older) not living with HIV (laboratory-confirmed via fourth

Doxycycline Postexposure Prophylaxis and Sexually Transmitted Infection Trends.

IMPORTANCE: Increasing rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been associated with rises in serious morbidity. While doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP), a strategy in which individuals take doxycycline, 200 mg, after condomless sex to prevent bacterial STIs, has been shown to be efficacious in randomized clinical trials, doxyPEP's potential effect on population-level STI incidence is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of citywide doxyPEP guideline release with reported chlamydia, gonorrhea, and early syphilis cases in men who have sex with men (MSM) and in

Bone health in transgender assigned female at birth people: effects of gender-affirming hormone therapy and gonadectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) and gender-affirming surgery (GAS) may be desired by transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals who want to affirm their gender identity. Testosterone is the basis of GAHT for transgender individuals assigned female at birth (AFAB), whereas GAS can involve hysterectomy, bilateral salpingectomy, bilateral oophorectomy (BO), thorax masculinization, and phalloplasty. Our study aimed to evaluate the effects of GAHT on the bone health of TGD AFAB individuals who have undergone or not undergone BO. METHODS: This was a single-center, longit

Being yourself is a defect: analysis of documented rights violations related to sexual orientation, gender identity and HIV in 2022 using the REAct system in six eastern European, Caucasus and Central Asian countries.

INTRODUCTION: Removing legal barriers to HIV services is crucial for the global 2030 goal of ending the HIV and AIDS epidemic, particularly in eastern Europe, the Caucasus and central Asia. Despite state commitments to uphold human rights, gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM), along with transgender people (TP) still face stigma and discrimination. This article presents an analysis of rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) and HIV reported in 2022 across six countries, highlighting features and their links to legislation and law enforcemen

Correlates of hazardous alcohol drinking among trans and non-binary people in Canada: A community-based cross-sectional study.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

PURPOSE: Transgender and non-binary people (TGNB) have a higher rate of heavy episodic drinking than cisgender people; however, extant knowledge about predictors of hazardous alcohol drinking (HAD) among different TGNB groups is limited. This study examined predictors of HAD in a national sample of TGNB people in Canada. METHODS: Logistic regression models were fit to examine the effects of 1) minority stressors and 2) stress-buffering factors on the likelihood of HAD, stratified by gender, among 2324 TGNB individuals from the Trans PULSE Canada survey, a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2

Differences in Female and Male-to-Female Transgender Facial Skin Micro-Vessel Density.

Importance: The risk of hematoma formation after rhytidectomy is gender associated and can lead to postoperative complications. The literature to help explain and elucidate the mechanism behind this gender-associated risk is poorly developed and requires further investigation. Objective: The objective of this study was to compare facial skin micro-vessel density of female and male-to-female (MTF) transgender patients undergoing rhytidectomy to better understand the mechanism of gender-correlated hematoma risk factors. The authors hypothesized that transgender patients would have higher micro-v
