OBJECTIVE: The critical window hypothesis of hormone therapy (HT) and cognitive function states that the effects of HT depend on timing of initiation with respect to age, the menopausal transition, or both, and that optimal effects are evident with early initiation. This article reviews clinical studies that bear on this hypothesis.
METHODS: Recognizing that the typical pattern of HT use is early HT initiation, this review describes findings from observational studies of ever use of HT and observational studies that looked specifically at the timing of HT on Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cogni

BACKGROUND: Treatment of high-grade glioma (HGG) patients with anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) has met with various side effects, such as cognitive deterioration. The cognitive effects of both older and newer AEDs in HGG patients are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of older and newer AEDs on cognitive performance in postoperative HGG patients.
METHODS: We selected HGG patients from 3 separate cohorts for use of older, newer, or no AEDs, as they represented distinct treatment eras and provided the opportunity to compare older and newer AEDs. In all 3 cohorts, pat

A unifying theoretical framework of three working memory components provides a systems perspective for discussing past and new findings in a 12-year research program that point to heterogeneity in the genetic and brain basis and behavioral expression of dyslexia: (a) codes for word-form storage and processing, (b) time-sensitive phonological and orthographic loops for maintaining information in working memory or outputting it, and (c) executive functions for language (e.g., rapid automatic switching of attention). Results, which span the genetic to neurological to behavioral levels of analysis

OBJECTIVES: Although cognitive impairment has been identified as a risk factor for visual hallucinations (VHs), more specific neuropsychological deficits underlying such phenomena have not been established. Here, we investigate the link between executive dysfunction and the occurrence of VHs.
METHODS: We evaluated three groups--17 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) with VHs, 20 patients with PD without VHs and 20 age-matched controls--on a battery of tests previously reported to evaluate executive functions, namely tests of inhibitory ability, short-term memory and working memory.

Adults with Down syndrome and adults with developmental delays not related to Down syndrome were asked to read, repeat, and formulate speech from a picture following the presentation of 2- and 4-word and picture sequences. The speech sequences were produced either immediately after stimulus presentation or following a 5-sec response delay. Overall, participants with Down syndrome produced more memory errors than persons without Down syndrome. Participants with Down syndrome also committed more speech production errors than the other participants, but only when they were required to repeat what

Warrington and Shallice (Brain 103, 99-112, 1980) proposed that letter-by-letter readers can no longer access the visual word-form system, and read by using the spelling system 'in reverse'. Contrary to their suggestion, this paper presents the case of a letter-by-letter reader who appears to use quite different strategies in word reading and spelling. Reading and spelling are both impaired, but they appear to be impaired in different ways. Most strikingly, the patient's spelling errors consist largely of phonological regularizations--indeed there is little evidence that he has any lexical spe

The interaction between the septal region and the hippocampal formation appears indispensable for the maintenance of normal memory and learning mechanisms in humans. The disruption of some combination of septo-hippocampal pathways, especially the disruption of the "dorsal route", deteriorates explicit memory functions. The case of a 25-year-old male patient is presented who developed anterograde and to a certain extent retrograde amnesia following rupture and repair of an arteriovenous malformation in the atrium of the left ventricle. A left-sided lesion of the dorsal route involving the poste

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence among nurses has emerged as a critical issue, posing a significant threat to their occupational safety. Education and training are the primary measures employed to prevent and respond to workplace violence. However, the current approaches have proven ineffective, possibly due to a lack of consideration for the specific needs of clinical nurses. Therefore, it is essential to explore the effectiveness of an informational education and training platform tailored to nurses' requirements. This study aimed to investigate the impact of such a platform on the incidence,

By using a longitudinal design and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), our previous study (Wang et al., 2020) found a scaffolding effect of early phonological processing in the superior temporal gyrus (STG) in 6-year-old children on later behavioral reading skill in 7.5-year-old children. Other than this previous study, nothing is known about longitudinal change in the bidirectional relation between reading skill and phonological processing in the brain. To fill this gap, in the current study, we used the same experimental paradigm as in Wang et al. (2020) to measure children's readi

Serotonin reuptake inhibitors have been reported to increase hippocampal volume and improve memory function in patients with Major depressive disorder (MDD). The postsynaptic 5-HT4 receptor (5-HT4R) is involved in hippocampal development, familial risk for depression and depressive pathology. In an open-label trial with 91 patients (72% female, mean 27.2 years) with MDD, we investigated the relation between changes in hippocampal volume, 5-HT4R, and verbal memory during 12 weeks treatment with 10-20 mg escitalopram. Depression severity, verbal memory, MRI-determined hippocampus volume and PET-

OBJECTIVES: Hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, and obesity are well-established risk factors for cognitive impairment and dementia in older adults. In contrast, previous studies that have assessed the impact of vascular risk factors (VRFs) on cognition in Parkinson's disease (PD) have had methodological limitations and reported conflicting findings. We address this question in a large well-characterized cohort of de novo PD patients.
METHODS: A total of 367 untreated and non-demented patients aged 50 years and older with early PD (H&Y = 1.0-2.0) underwent a comprehensive clinical and neuro

We investigated the neural correlates of concrete nouns with either many or few semantic features. A group of 21 participants underwent two days of training and were then asked to categorize 40 newly learned words and a set of matched familiar words as living or nonliving in an MRI scanner. Our results showed that the most reliable effects of semantic richness were located in the left angular gyrus (AG) and middle temporal gyrus (MTG), where activation was higher for semantically rich than poor words. Other areas showing the same pattern included bilateral precuneus and posterior cingulate gyr
