Immersive display systems for simulating natural vision.

Vision is traditionally studied using simplified stimuli presented briefly near the center of a flat display while subjects maintain visual fixation. This paradigm contrasts sharply with real-world vision, which is immersive, dynamic and strongly entrained to self-initiated actions. Traditional approaches have allowed researchers to systematically study the neural encoding of visual features and the influence of cognitive operations such as attention. However, other methods are needed to study more holistic and first-person perspectives on vision, such as those related to physical space, conti

Enhancing experimental design through Bayes factor design analysis: insights from multi-armed bandit tasks.

Bayesian statistics offers a flexible framework that supports iterative updating of hypotheses and the incorporation of prior information, amongst other advantages. Although well established for retrospective analysis, the application of Bayesian methods to prospective analysis is less well developed, especially when used in combination with computational model-based analysis of behavioural data in cognitive neuroscience. It is therefore important to establish effective methods for testing and optimising experimental designs for these purposes. One framework for a prospective approach is Bayes

Artificial intelligence-supported therapeutic interventions for autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The increased prevalence of ASD has generated a pressing demand for flexible therapeutic and educational tools. AI has been suggested as a potential bridge to this gap, but the translation from a model to a clinical application necessitates rigorous assessment. The purpose of the present review is to compile and examine the existing literature to demonstrate AI interventions that have advanced from a proposed model to being used with human participants. METHODS: We systematically searched five databases (Embase, PubMed, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, Web of Science; Jan 2016-Dec 2025

Associations of prior treatment, waiting time, symptom severity, and session frequency with symptom change in CBT for depression and anxiety in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are among the most prevalent mental health problems globally, with psychotherapy serving as a first-line treatment. Initial symptom severity, prior treatment history, waiting time, and session frequency may influence treatment effectiveness in routine care. METHODS: We analyzed session-by-session data from clients receiving a seven-session cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) program for depression (N = 2627) or anxiety (N = 3929) in primary care. Symptoms were assessed using the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 at each session. The magnitude and rate of change were examined u

Facilitators and barriers for return to work among patients with post-COVID-19 condition: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Post COVID-19 condition (PCC) can have long-lasting adverse effects, including impacts on work ability. This study explores the facilitators and barriers in the return-to-work (RTW) process. DESIGN AND METHODS: Conducted in spring 2023 at the Outpatient Clinic for Long-Term Effects of COVID-19, this qualitative study involved phone interviews with 32 patients with PCC, of whom 28 were included in the analysis, while four interviews served as pilots. A research doctor conducted semi-structured interviews covering work ability, RTW actions and rehabilitation experiences. The intervi

NMDA receptor ablation in medial prefrontal cortex disrupts value updating and reward history integration.

Schizophrenia, a serious mental illness, is associated with evidence of NMDA receptor (NMDAR) dysfunction and characterized by cognitive impairments that reflect impaired value updating and feedback-driven control; however the cellular and circuit-level mechanisms underlying these disruptions remain unclear. Here we test how NMDA receptor (NMDAR) signaling in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) contributes to adaptive decision-making by combining targeted genetic ablation in mice and systemic pharmacology. Using a CRISPR-Cas9 approach to eliminate the obligate GluN1 subunit, we induced spatial

Career duration and later-life health conditions among former professional American-style football players.

OBJECTIVES: Career duration is often used as a metric of neurotrauma exposure in studies of elite athletes. However, as a proxy metric, career length may not accurately represent causal factors, and associations with health outcomes may be susceptible to selection effects. To date, relationships between professional American-style football (ASF) career length and postcareer health remain incompletely characterised. METHODS: We conducted a survey-based cross-sectional cohort study of former professional ASF players. Flexible regression methods measured associations between self-reported career

Psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for treatment resistant depression: A randomized clinical trial evaluating repeated doses of psilocybin.

BACKGROUND: Psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) has been associated with antidepressant effects. Trials to date have typically excluded participants with complex presentations. Our aim was to determine the feasibility of PAP in a complex population, including high levels of treatment resistance in major depressive and bipolar disorder and patients with baseline suicidality and significant comorbidity. We also evaluated flexible repeated doses over a 6-month period. METHODS: Adults with treatment-resistant depression as part of major depressive or bipolar II disorder without psychosis or a

Telepsychology for Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury: Protocol for a Randomized Control Study of Video-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

BACKGROUND: A substantial proportion of individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) experience depression, which has been negatively associated with recovery and community participation after injury. Despite significant barriers to seeking and receiving in-person mental health care, little research has focused on the efficacy of telepsychology among individuals with SCI. OBJECTIVES: To describe the design and implementation of an ongoing single-center, randomized controlled, video-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention among individuals with SCI. METHODS: Participants within 1 y

Semantic knowledge modeling and evaluation of argument Theory to develop dialogue based patient education systems for chronic disease Self-Management.

BACKGROUND: To improve understanding as well as uptake of health educational material, it should be tailored to informational needs, offer intuitive modes of interaction, and present credible evidence for health claims. Dialogue systems go some way in meeting these requirements, as they emulate interactive and intuitive person-to-person communication. However, most works do not offer a formal model nor modelling process to structure dialogue content, and do not focus on ensuring credibility. METHODS: We propose an Extended Model of Argument (EMA) dialogue model and modelling process to suppor

Lexical-semantic and executive deficits revealed by computational modelling: A drift diffusion model perspective.

Flexible language use requires coordinated functioning of two systems: conceptual representations and control. The interaction between the two systems can be observed when people are asked to match a word to a picture. Participants are slower and less accurate for related word-picture pairs (word: banana, picture: apple) relative to unrelated pairs (word: banjo, picture: apple). The mechanism underlying interference however is still unclear. We analyzed word-picture matching (WPM) performance of patients with stroke-induced lesions to the left-temporal (N = 5) or left-frontal cortex (N = 5) an

Covariate-constrained randomization for cluster randomized trials in the long-term care setting: Application to the TRAIN-AD trial.

UNLABELLED: Little has been reported on strategies to ensure key covariate balance in cluster randomized trials in the nursing home setting. Facilities vary widely on key characteristics, small numbers may be randomized, and staggered enrollment is often necessary. A covariate-constrained algorithm was used to randomize facilities in the Trial to Reduce Antimicrobial use In Nursing home residents with Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementias (TRAIN-AD), an ongoing trial in Boston-area facilities (14 facilities/arm). Publicly available 2015 LTCfocus.org data were leveraged to inform the distribu

Efficacy of a transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral intervention for eating disorder psychopathology delivered through a smartphone app: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although effective treatments exist for diagnostic and subthreshold-level eating disorders (EDs), a significant proportion of affected individuals do not receive help. Interventions translated for delivery through smartphone apps may be one solution towards reducing this treatment gap. However, evidence for the efficacy of smartphones apps for EDs is lacking. We developed a smartphone app based on the principles and techniques of transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral therapy for EDs and evaluated it through a pre-registered randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Symptomatic individu

Frontostriatal Resting State Functional Connectivity in Resilient and Non-Resilient Adolescents with a Family History of Alcohol Use Disorder.

Objectives: Youth with parental substance use disorder (family-history positive [FH+]) are at an elevated risk for substance use problems, but not all FH+ youth experience this outcome. Frontostriatal brain networks involved in inhibitory control and reward responsivity underlie risk-taking behaviors, but the role of these networks in substance use heterogeneity among FH+ youth has not been examined. The present study examined resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) in frontostriatal networks in FH+ youth with and without risky substance use. Methods: Participants were 36 FH+ adolescents

Implementing trauma-focused CBT for children of veterans in the VA: Providing comprehensive services to veterans and their families.

Military families experience unique stressful circumstances such as frequent moves, service-related physical and mental health difficulties, and separation from support. Although many families exhibit high resilience in response to these stressors, military children are at an increased risk for emotional and behavioral difficulties, exposure to intimate partner violence, and child maltreatment. These potential problems not only affect child functioning, but often also negatively impact family and veteran outcomes. Although the Department of Defense has enhanced efforts to address child and fam

Can extra care housing support the changing needs of older people living with dementia?

With over two-thirds of people with dementia living in the community and one-third of those living alone, it is important to consider the future housing needs of this population, particularly as symptoms of cognitive impairment increase. Policy in England has focused on enabling people living with dementia to remain in their own homes for as long as possible, often with the support of a family carer. However, many people struggle to maintain an acceptable quality of life in their own homes as their dementia advances, often due to the design limitations of mainstream housing and the challenge o

Tolerance of uncertainty: Conceptual analysis, integrative model, and implications for healthcare.

RATIONALE: Uncertainty tolerance (UT) is an important, well-studied phenomenon in health care and many other important domains of life, yet its conceptualization and measurement by researchers in various disciplines have varied substantially and its essential nature remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to: 1) analyze the meaning and logical coherence of UT as conceptualized by developers of UT measures, and 2) develop an integrative conceptual model to guide future empirical research regarding the nature, causes, and effects of UT. METHODS: A narrative review and con
