BACKGROUND: between 1998 and 1999, an outbreak of potentially fatal viral encephalitis erupted among pig farm workers in West Malaysia, and later spread to Singapore where abattoir workers were afflicted. Twenty-three cases of blastomycosis were reported in a survey conducted in the province of Quebec from 1981-90. Thirteen patients resided south of the St Lawrence River and the other 10, north. Two small geographical clusters were apparent in and around the cities of Sherbrooke and Quebec. The male to female ratio was 1.6:1 and the median age was 47 years (range 26 to 77). A non-comparative open trial with itraconazole in progressive forms of human histoplasmosis was carried out. Thirty two patients who completed 6 months of treatment were included; 29 suffered the chronic disseminated form; 2 exhibited a chronic pulmonary histoplasmosis and one patient presented a subacute disseminated form. A population of free-ranging koalas in southeastern Queensland was examined to determine the prevalence of Chlamydia psittaci infections. Although C. psittaci was isolated from 46 of 65 (71%) koalas studied, only six (9%) of these had clinical signs of disease. In 1984-1985, an outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection occurred in two geriatric wards. The risk of causing or reactivating pelvic infection by hysterosalpingography (HSG) was assessed in 118 infertile women. Serological evidence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection was sought before, and 10 days and 4 weeks after HSG, using the single-antigen whole-inclusion immunofluorescence (WIF) test for species-specific antibody and the complement fixation test (CFT) for group antibody.
