Infection-triggered, life-threatening salt-loss and hyperkalaemia developed in two male infants with wasting, inappropriately low plasma aldosterone concentrations and elevated plasma renin activity. The presumptive diagnosis of a defective terminal step in aldosterone biosynthesis was made by the presence of large amounts of 11-dehydrotetrahydrocorticosterone and its 18-hydroxylated metabolite (18-OH-THA), free 18-hydroxycorticosterone (18-OH-B) and 18-hydroxytetrahydrocorticosterone in the urine of both patients. The diagnosis of corticosterone methyl oxidase type II (CMO II) deficiency was

We have conducted a prospective comparison of 155 rheumatoid patients and 95 control subjects. Both groups were selected without regard to respiratory status, but were comparable in age, sex and smoking experience. The prevalence of respiratory symptoms, of past respiratory illnesses and of pulmonary function findings of airway obstruction was similar in both groups. However, the rheumatoids showed an increased frequency of chest crackles and abnormal chest radiographs, and had pulmonary function changes suggestive of a restrictive ventilatory defect. These pulmonary abnormalities were associa

Urinary excretions of free cortisol and corticosteroid sulfates were determined in 31 female controls, 77 breast cancer patients, 14 cases of colonic cancer, and 7 patients with bronchial carcinoma. Elevated corticosteroid sulfate excretion was present in 38% of patients with locally recurrent breast cancer and 30% of those with distant metastases, but in only 13% of the "early" breast cancer cases. A similar abnormality was seen in colonic cancer. Urinary free cortisol was usually normal. ACTH stimulation in a normal subject produced marked increases of both urinary free cortisol and corticos
