Recent research on multiple personality disorder.

The last decade has seen the emergence of solid research on MPD and the dissociative disorders, particularly in the area of diagnosis and clinical phenomenology. A number of other areas have been opened up or advanced considerably. The most notable of these include child and adolescent dissociative disorders; investigation of dissociative memory disturbances; studies of differential alter personality psychophysiology and switching; cross-cultural comparisons of MPD, possession, and dissociative states; and the contribution of pathologic dissociation to the symptomatology of other psychiatric d

Hypervigilance for fear after basolateral amygdala damage in humans.

Recent rodent research has shown that the basolateral amygdala (BLA) inhibits unconditioned, or innate, fear. It is, however, unknown whether the BLA acts in similar ways in humans. In a group of five subjects with a rare genetic syndrome, that is, Urbach-Wiethe disease (UWD), we used a combination of structural and functional neuroimaging, and established focal, bilateral BLA damage, while other amygdala sub-regions are functionally intact. We tested the translational hypothesis that these BLA-damaged UWD-subjects are hypervigilant to facial expressions of fear, which are prototypical innate

Individuals with schizophrenia present hypo- and hyperactivation during implicit cueing in an inhibitory task.

BACKGROUND: The primary purpose of this investigation was to assess the neural correlates of implicit cueing during an inhibitory task in schizophrenia when performance accuracy was matched with healthy comparison subjects. METHODS: We compared 17 individuals with chronic schizophrenia (SZ; medicated, 13.9 average years of illness) and 17 healthy comparison subjects (HC) matched for hit and false alarm rates, age, and education on a visual Go/Nogo task during functional magnetic resonance imaging. In this task, one of the go stimuli also served implicitly as a cue predictive of a subsequent i

Understanding Online Hate Toward Sexual and Gender Minorities: A Systematic Review.

Online hate speech (OHS) refers to discriminatory or offensive content shared via digital platforms that targets social groups. Synthesizing evidence on OHS directed at sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) is crucial, given the disproportionate online discrimination experienced by SGM people and its implications for well-being and social norms. This PRISMA-based systematic review synthesized quantitative studies in which the target of OHS content was SGM people, regardless of whether participants were SGM or non-SGM. We addressed four questions: (a) OHS definitions and operationalizations; (b)

Determinants of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Among LGBTQ+ Populations: A Systematic Review of Empirical Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the multifactorial drivers of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in LGBTQ+ populations is critical to advancing equitable cardiovascular care. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and synthesize empirical evidence on factors influencing CVD risk among sexual minority populations. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Five databases (PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect and ProQuest) were searched for studies published between 2019 and 2024 that examined CVD risk factors among LGBTQ+ adults. Eligible studies were appraised using the Joanna Briggs

Health disparities and socioeconomic challenges faced by the Khawaja Sira (intersex and gender-diverse) community in Islamabad, Pakistan: A descriptive cross-sectional study.

In Pakistan, gender-diverse and intersex individuals locally identified as Khawaja Sira face systemic exclusion, social stigma, and limited access to essential health services. Despite the 2018 Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, empirical evidence on their health conditions and socio-economic realities remains limited. This study assesses the physical and mental health status, healthcare access, and socio-economic challenges of the Khawaja Sira community in Islamabad. A descriptive cross-sectional study recruited 91 self-identified Khawaja Sira individuals in Islamabad through sno

Ethical and social implications of implementing polygenic embryo screening into clinical care: A scoping review.

PURPOSE: Polygenic embryo screening (PES), or preimplantation genetic testing for polygenic conditions/traits, is an emerging application of polygenic risk scores within in vitro fertilization. Marketed commercially to prospective parents with limited professional guidelines, PES raises ethical and social concerns. To date, no scoping review has synthesized the ethical landscape of PES. Our study addresses this gap by mapping ethical and sociocultural issues across academic literature. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, in Septemb

Evaluating the Visible Difference Parenting Toolkit: an ACT-based intervention to improve parental/carer stress and psychosocial well-being of carers of children with appearance affecting conditions and injuries.

OBJECTIVE: Alongside the typical challenges of parenting, parents and carers of children with visible differences can experience additional psychosocial challenges including anxiety, stress, guilt, and concerns about stigma and discrimination. The Visible Difference Parenting Toolkit is an ACT-based intervention aimed at improving psychosocial well-being for this group of parents/carers. This study examined the acceptability and potential benefit of the intervention utilizing a mixed-methods single-arm pre-post design. METHOD: Parents/carers (baseline n = 173) completed an online survey at th

Post-burn Occupational Disruption:Employment Status, Job Change, and Perceived Career Impact.

BACKGROUND: Burn injury may have lasting effects on work participation because of prolonged rehabilitation, functional limitations, appearance-related concerns, and psychological distress. Return-to-work status alone may obscure ongoing disruption in work roles, career appraisal, and support needs. How these elements cluster during post-burn occupational recovery remains insufficiently characterized. METHODS: We analyzed 166 adult burn survivors with baseline demographic, clinical, and psychosocial assessments and occupational follow-up data collected 24 months later. Outcomes included employ

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders among gig-based food delivery workers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The digital economy has spurred gig work, especially in food delivery, which grew during COVID-19. However, gig workers face occupational hazards like traffic accidents, poor ergonomics, and unsafe conditions, leading to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Studies show high rates of back and neck pain among delivery riders due to physical strain, repetitive motions, and long hours. WMSDs reduce productivity and increase healthcare costs. This review examines WMSD prevalence, risk factors, and related issues like accidents and violence among food delivery workers. METHO

Intelligent Diagnosis and Treatment of Psoriasis Research: A Bibliometric Analysis from 2005-01-01 to 2025-12-31.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease induced by genetic, immune and environmental interactions. The central mechanism is the aberrant activation of the Th17/IL-23 pathway, which leads to uncontrolled proliferation of keratinocytes and systemic inflammation. Psoriasis affects about 1-3% of the global population, with 70-90% of patients suffering from moderate to severe itching of the skin, 50% of patients suffering from thickening or loss of nails, and even 30% of patients suffering from a combination of arthropathy, and 59.1% of patients suffering from a psychological burden

Assessment of Quality of life among Transgender Populations in a Metropolitan City of West Bengal, India: A Cross-sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Transgender is an umbrella term used to define individuals whose gender identity or expression differs from the culturally bound gender associated with one's assigned birth sex (i.e., male or female). Transgender individuals belong to a marginalized population; they experience widespread prejudice, discrimination, violence, and other forms of stigma. They suffer from various diseases like HIV and STIs/RTIs. This study was conducted to assess quality of life and the factors associated with it. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 120

Development of a psychosocial-clinical nomogram to predict delayed medical help-seeking in women with stress urinary incontinence: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Delayed medical help-seeking is a common yet understudied behavior among women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI), potentially worsening symptom burden and diminishing quality of life. While clinical factors have been investigated, the contribution of psychosocial determinants remains poorly defined. This study aimed to identify key predictors and develop a validated nomogram for individualized risk estimation of delayed consultation. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed electronic health records of 1,400 adult women diagnosed with SUI at a tertiary medical

Development and Validation of a Predictive Nomogram for Postpartum Hemorrhage in Pregnant Women: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) remains a major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Early identification of high-risk women is crucial for implementing targeted interventions. This study aimed to develop and validate a predictive nomogram that integrates key maternal and perinatal risk factors to estimate the risk of PPH. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 336 pregnant women who delivered at our hospital from January 2022 to January 2024 were included. PPH was defined as blood loss >500 mL after vaginal delivery or >1000 mL after cesarean section. Independent

Stigma and related influencing factors in brain cancer patients: a cross-sectional study and parallel mediation analysis.

PURPOSE: Patients with brain cancer and painful symptoms of the disease experience heavy pressure and negative inner experiences, leading to a sense of stigma. Therefore, this study assessed the level of stigma in patients with brain cancer and analyzed the risk factors for stigma to analyze the underlying relationships among depression, social support, low self-esteem, and stigma. METHODS: Patients completed the Social Impact Scale, Self-rating Depression Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Herth Hope Index, Social Support Rating Scale, and Self-Perceived Burden Scale. Neural processes of inhibitory control in American Indian peoples are associated with reduced mental health problems.

American Indians (AI) experience disproportionately high prevalence of suicide and substance use disorders (SUD). However, accounting for risk burden (e.g. historical trauma and discrimination), the likelihood of mental health disorders or SUD is similar or decreased compared with the broader population. Such findings have spurred psychological research examining the protective factors, but no studies have investigated its potential neural mechanisms. Inhibitory control is one of the potential neurobehavioral construct with demonstrated protective effects, but has not been examined in neuroima

Early intervention in post-traumatic stress disorder without exposure to trauma memories using internet-delivered cognitive therapy: A pilot case series.

OBJECTIVES: Trauma-focussed psychological interventions are the treatments of choice for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As many clinical services receive high demand for PTSD interventions, strategies to improve treatment efficiency are needed. Some people seek help in the early phase post-trauma, including as soon as the first few months. It is unclear whether all components of trauma-focussed CBT are needed in this initial stage. Providing brief intervention in this early phase without work on trauma memories may be feasible and effective. This service evaluation study describes a ca

Perception of Gamblers: A Systematic Review.

It is generally assumed that gamblers, and particularly people with gambling problems (PG), are affected by negative perception and stigmatisation. However, a systematic review of empirical studies investigating the perception of gamblers has not yet been carried out. This article therefore summarises empirical evidence on the perception of gamblers and provides directions for future research. A systematic literature review based on the relevant guidelines was carried out searching three databases. The databases Scopus, PubMed and BASE were used to cover social scientific knowledge, medical-ps

Health disparities between genderqueer, transgender, and cisgender individuals: An extension of minority stress theory.

Interpersonal, social, and structural stressors have been identified as key elements that explain health disparities between transgender and cisgender individuals. However, most of this research has focused on binary transgender individuals or has not differentiated between binary and nonbinary individuals; little research has examined the experiences of minority stress or health of those identifying outside the gender binary. Guided by intersectionality and drawing on a sample of 3,568 college students from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health's 2012-2016 database-of whom 892 identified ou

The relative stigmatization of eating disorders and obesity in males and females.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge-eating disorder (BED), and obesity are stigmatized conditions known to affect both men and women. However, little research has examined differences in stigmatization of individuals with these diagnoses or the impact of gender on stigmatization. Such perceptions may play an important role in understanding and reducing the stigma associated with weight and dysfunctional eating behaviors. This study investigated stigmatizing attitudes toward eating disorders and obesity in men and women. METHOD: Participants were university undergradu
