Heterogeneity of cutaneous leishmaniasis with emphasis on the Old World.

Leishmaniasis of the integument which may result from infection with a number of different species of Leishmania can be primary, or can arise as a late manifestation of systemic infection of the reticuloendothelial organs (kala-azar). Infection of the skin and/or mucosae assumes many different clinical forms which are reviewed here. The immune response is essentially a cell-mediated one. Even left untreated, the majority of tegumentary lesions will eventually self-heal but the process may be very prolonged and severe scarring can result. The main features of diagnosis, prevention and treatment

Diethylcarbamazine in the control of bancroftian filariasis in the highly endemic Ok Tedi area of Papua New Guinea: phase 1.

The effects of a well-spaced diethylcarbamazine (DEC) mass drug application in areas highly endemic for Wuchereria bancrofti in Papua New Guinea are not known. In 1986 a semi-annual single-dose 6 mg/kg body weight administration of DEC was initiated in the Ok Tedi area of Western Province, Papua New Guinea. The rate of bancroftian filariasis in the area was 39%. Within two years the rate of detectable microfilaraemia was reduced from 31% to 11% in the treated group. The mean blood density of the parasite was reduced from 79 to 19 microfilariae per 20 microliters. A survey of untreated villages

[Aspects of the development of ocular onchocerciasis in West-Africa after three years of simulium control (authors transl)].

In four rural West-African communities with different degrees of ocular affection the development of ocular onchocerciasis has been evaluated after three years of vector control. In the area of a successful disruption of the transmission the population with a slight degree of ocular onchocerciasis before control operations started, did not show an aggravation of the lesions. In those groups severely affected at the beginning of vector control the lesions showed no progression in the majority of the cases. The diminuition of the ocular parasite load, resulting from the reduced transmission, app

DDT Resistance Korean Body Lice and Development of Insecticide Resistance Knowledge during Korean War.

DDT exemplifies success and failure of modern science and technology. Once it was heralded as technological wonder that will deliver human from misery of insect-borne infectious disease. However DDT took dramatic downturn after failure in global malaria eradication program initiated by World Health Organization, with advent of DDT-resistant strain of mosquitoes. Although insecticide resistance has been know since late 19th century, the definitions and mythologies for finding resistance has not been settled until 1950s. This paper argues that discovery of DDT-resistant strain of body lice in pr

A toxicogenomics approach reveals characteristics supporting the honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) safety profile of the butenolide insecticide flupyradifurone.

Flupyradifurone, a novel butenolide insecticide, selectively targets insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), comparable to structurally different insecticidal chemotypes such as neonicotinoids and sulfoximines. However, flupyradifurone was shown in acute toxicity tests to be several orders of magnitude less toxic to western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) than many other insecticides targeting insect nAChRs. The underlying reasons for this difference in toxicity remains unknown and were investigated here. Pharmacokinetic studies after contact application of [14C]flupyradifurone to hon

Identification, molecular characterization and expression of aminopeptidase N-1 (APN-1) from Anopheles stephensi in SF9 cell line as a candidate molecule for developing a vaccine that interrupt malaria transmission.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization reports, billions of people around the world are at risk for malaria disease and it is important to consider the preventive strategies for protecting the people that are living in high risk areas. One of the main reasons of disease survival is diversity of vectors and parasites in different malaria regions that have their specific features, behaviour and biology. Therefore, specific regional strategies are necessary for successful control of malaria. One of the tools that needs to be developed for elimination and prevention of reintroducti

Evaluation of biological quality and reproductive competitiveness of gamma-irradiated Aedes aegypti for sterile insect technique purposes.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) has emerged as a promising and environmentally friendly strategy for the suppression of vector mosquito populations, particularly Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti, in different countries over the past fifteen years. However, the effectiveness of SIT largely depends on the biological quality and mating competitiveness of the sterilized males. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the biological and reproductive performance of males of Ae. aegypti species sterilized by gamma radiation under both laboratory and semi-field conditions. Different d

Endophytic Fusarium commune G3-29-Mediated dsRNA Delivery for Efficient Control of Western Flower Thrips.

RNA interference (RNAi) provides a sequence-specific strategy for pest management, but efficient and stable double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) delivery remains a key challenge. Here, we established a plant-probiotic-based gene silencing system using the endophytic fungus Fusarium commune G3-29 as a dsRNA delivery vector against western flower thrips (WFTs, Frankliniella occidentalis). Recombinant G3-29 strains expressing dsRNA targeting the essential WFT genes ACT and SNF were constructed and confirmed to colonize kidney bean leaves without pathogenicity. Bioassays showed that feeding on leaves colon

Field efficacy of new-generation insecticides and household residue mitigation techniques assessed by LC-MS/MS for safe tomato consumption.

The present study was conducted during 2023–24 and 2024–25 to evaluate the field efficacy of new-generation insecticides against major insect pests of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and to assess household-level residue mitigation techniques for safe tomato consumption. Field trials tested chlorantraniliprole, emamectin benzoate, spinosad, and indoxacarb at three dosages. Chlorantraniliprole 18.5% SC at the recommended 1× dose reduced Helicoverpa armigera populations by 59.82% and 51.60% across the two seasons, and aphid populations by 32.20% and 39.09%, achieving tomato yields of 17.40 t ha

Bacillus siamensis alters gut microbiota and the TCA cycle during bioconversion of swine manure by black soldier fly larvae.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL, Hermetia illucens) is recognized as a promising insect species for converting organic waste into valuable biomass. However, when using specific substrates such as pig manure for breeding, the final nutritional quality of the larvae, especially the composition of limiting amino acids and fatty acids, often fails to meet the standards of high quality feed. This study aimed to investigate whether Bacillus siamensis MZ16 was associated with changes in the biotransformation efficiency and nutritional quality of BSFL in relation to the intestinal microbiota. Development of quantum dot-based immunochromatographic strip for detection of antibodies against ASFV pp62.

ASFV is the only known double-stranded insect-borne DNA virus, which can rapidly infect domestic pigs and wild boars with ticks as transmission medium. Since it was first discovered in 1921, it quickly spread to all parts of the world and brought huge economic losses to the pig industry all over the world. At present, there is still no safe and effective vaccine for ASFV. Here, we developed a quantum-dot labeled antibody test strip for the detection of antibodies against ASFV pp62. The pp62 protein was labeled with quantum dots, and the antibody test strip was developed uses it in a detection

Molecular action of larvicidal flavonoids on ecdysteroidogenic glutathione S-transferase Noppera-bo in Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito control is a crucial global issue for protecting the human community from mosquito-borne diseases. There is an urgent need for the development of selective and safe reagents for mosquito control. Flavonoids, a group of chemical substances with variable phenolic structures, such as daidzein, have been suggested as potential mosquito larvicides with less risk to the environment. However, the mode of mosquito larvicidal action of flavonoids has not been elucidated. RESULTS: Here, we report that several flavonoids, including daidzein, inhibit the activity of glutathione S-tra

A Case of Cardboard Boxes Likely Facilitating the Biting of a Patient by Trypanosoma cruzi-Infected Triatomine Bugs.

Chagas disease is a vector-borne and potentially fatal parasitic disease that is transmitted by the triatomine bug, a nocturnal feeding, flying arthropod, often referred to by its colloquial name, the "kissing bug." Vector-borne transmission is considered the most important means of spreading Chagas disease in endemic and nonendemic areas. Corrugated cardboard boxes may accelerate the spread of these insect vectors to nonendemic areas through their ability to harbor and transport small terrestrial arthropods such as silverfish, termites, and cockroaches. We report the case of a patient living

Novel polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay to determine internal transcribed spacer-2 group in the Chagas disease vector, Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811).

Triatoma dimidiata is the most important Chagas disease insect vector in Central America as this species is primarily responsible for Trypanosoma cruzi transmission to humans, the protozoan parasite that causes Chagas disease. T. dimidiata sensu lato is a genetically diverse assemblage of taxa and effective vector control requires a clear understanding of the geographic distribution and epidemiological importance of its taxa. The nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2) is frequently used to infer the systematics of triatomines. However, oftentimes amplification and sequencing o

Complex patterns of genetic variability in populations of the New World screwworm fly revealed by mitochondrial DNA markers.

Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), the New World screwworm fly, is an important agent of traumatic myiasis, which is endemic in the Neotropical region and which has great economic impact on the development of the livestock industry. International efforts have been aimed at designing programmes to control and eradicate this species from endemic areas. Thorough knowledge of the population genetics of an insect pest is a fundamental component to ensuring the success of a pest management strategy because it enables the determination of an appropriate geographic scale for

Ecological origin and natural Trypanosoma cruzi infection are associated with reconfiguration of the Rhodnius pallescens midgut microbiome.

The intrusion of the secondary vector Rhodnius pallescens into urban and peri-urban environments in Colombia poses an emerging risk for Chagas disease transmission, compounded by rising insecticide resistance. Developing novel control strategies requires the identification of stable gut symbionts; however, high-resolution microbial profiles for urban-intruding vector populations remain poorly defined. To characterize the intestinal microbiome and identify candidate taxa for paratransgenesis, we generated high-resolution taxonomic composition and predicted functional profiles using 16S rRNA amp

Egg volatiles of oak silkworm mediate defense against parasitoid wasps.

Most insects protect their eggs from natural enemies via physical coverings, yet defensive mechanisms of exposed eggs (i.e., those without such coverings), particularly those lacking toxins, remain largely unexplored. The oak silkworm (Antheraea pernyi) lays such exposed eggs, yet these eggs exhibit less parasitism than manually extracted washed eggs (MUWE) under laboratory conditions, raising the question of whether this defense operates in nature and how it functions. Here, field experiments showed that naturally laid unwashed eggs had significantly lower parasitism by three parasitoid speci
