Lesions in sheep following administration of a vaccine of a Freund's complete adjuvant nature used in the control of ovine paratuberculosis.

CASE HISTORIES: Occurrences of adverse reactions in seven sheep flocks in Australia following vaccination against paratuberculosis where vet … e were reported, described as "OJD staggers" by producers. DIAGNOSIS: Granulomatous cellulitis and lymphadenitis associated with oil droplets typical of "oil granulomata". Injection of vaccine into the dorsal cervical area resulted in progressive paralysis due to myonecrosis and suspected granulomatous leptomeningitis. CLINICAL RELEVANCE AND CONCLUSIONS: Altho …

Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome in a young adult who had features of periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis as a child.

Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS) was diagnosed in a 22-year-old man after a 1-year history of periodic fever, myalgia, conjunctivitis, cervical lymphadenopathy, and oral ulcers. As a child he had signs and symptoms suggestive of periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis syndrome. This report indicates the importance of considering TRAPS as a cause of periodic fever in older children and adults and that TRAPS may present with signs and symptoms suggestive of periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis syndrome in young c

Reactive lymph nodes in pediatric practice.

A variety of unusual reactive conditions may be seen in lymph nodes from the pediatric age group. Some of these, such as the autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome, reflect underlying abnormalities of the immune system and cellular control processes, while others are related to viral infections or are of unknown cause. Many of these conditions can mimic malignant neoplasms, so it is important that pathologists recognize these unusual reactive patterns.

Lymph node infection by Trichomonas tenax: report of a case with co-infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

In an 82-year-old woman, presenting with fever and asthenia, cervical adenopathy was noted. Clinical and radiological investigations were fruitless. Laboratory examinations detected a refractory anemia. The lymph node was excised and showed numerous trichomonads on touch preparations. Histologically, the node showed caseous necrosis and macrophagic reaction. Diagnosis of lymph node infection by Trichomonas tenax was made. Three weeks later, culture of the node showed Mycobacterium tuberculosis and let us conclude co-infection. T tenax is usually regarded as a harmless saprophyte of the oral ca

[Pharyngo-tonsillitis and necrosing submaxillary adenitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes associated with toxic shock syndrome in children from Mexico City].

We report on six previously healthy children between nine months and nine years old, who suffered streptococcal faringoamigdalitis and cervical adenitis with scarlet fever and toxic shock syndrome; four of them died in a fulminant course and two survived. These patients behave similarly to others reported from United States of America, England and Australia, and in similar way these clinical entity could be due to bacterial pyrogenic exotoxins according to the clinical fulminant course.

Progressive transformation of germinal centers with and without association to Hodgkin's disease.

Progressively transformed germinal centers occurred in about 3.5% of cases of chronic nonspecific lymphadenitis. They are larger than germinal centers and are composed of follicular mantle lymphocytes, small clusters of proliferating mainly medium-sized B- and T-cells, as well as an extensive network of follicular dendritic cells. Sixty-six patients with lymph node enlargement containing progressively transformed germinal centers and staging and sequential biopsies of 213 patients with Hodgkin's disease (mixed and nodular sclerosis type) were investigated with special reference to the relation…

Molecular epidemiology of HTLV-I-associated non-Hodgkin's lymphomas in Jamaica.

As part of epidemiologic studies of human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-I-associated malignancies in Jamaica, the authors evaluated 26 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma for the presence of integrated HTLV-I provirus in their malignant cells. Fifteen of 26 patients had integrated provirus. All 15 also were HTLV-I antibody positive. Eleven patients did not have integrated provirus, and all 11 were antibody negative. All of the antibody-positive cases had onset of their disease in adulthood (age range, 21-57 years) as opposed to the broad age range of negative cases (4-66 years). Clinical featur

Rattlesnake capsule-associated Salmonella arizona infections.

Three Hispanic patients at our institution developed extragastrointestinal Salmonella arizona infection associated with the ingestion of rattlesnake capsules. All patients had underlying chronic medical illnesses, including the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, and congestive heart failure. Rattlesnake capsules were obtained from both local pharmacies and patients. Salmonella arizona, as well as various other enteric organisms, was grown on cultures obtained from all capsules tested. Review of the literature disclosed three additional cases of extragastrointesti

Aerobic and anaerobic bacteriology of adenoids in children: a comparison between patients with chronic adenotonsillitis and adenoid hypertrophy.

Adenoids were obtained from 18 children with chronic adenotonsillitis (Group A) and from 12 others with adenoid hypertrophy (Group B). Patients' ages ranged from 20 months to 15 years (mean 6 years); 18 were males and 12 females. The adenoids were sectioned in half after heat searing of the surface, and the core material was cultured for aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Mixed aerobic and anaerobic flora were obtained from all patients, yielding an average of 7.8 isolates (4.6 anaerobes and 3.2 aerobes) per specimen. There were 97 anaerobes isolated. The predominant isolates in both groups

Infection versus disease in South American blastomycosis.

The mechanism of infection in South American blastomycosis is discussed, and the probability of a mild or asymptomatic form of the disease, regressing spontaneously with subsequent immunity, in persons living in endemic areas. Primary lesions in the oral mucosa or in the skin have not been convincingly shown to occur in paracoccidioidomycosis. Several reports of systemic involvement of many organs with no evidence of skin and mucosal lesions support the theory of pulmonary entry.

[The role of x-ray studies in the diagnosis of soft tissue tumors of the axillary space].

Clinico-roentgenological findings in 148 patients with an axillary location of tumor are described. Thirty two of them had benign tumors (lipomas, fibromas, angiomas), 8-malignant (sarcomas), 57-systemic diseases associated with increased lymph nodes (lymphogranulomatosis, leucosis, etc), 18-inflammatory processes (tuberculosis, abscess), 35-accessory lobes of mammary glands. It was found that the method in question permitted, taking into account clinical data, in most cases to establish a differential diagnosis between various tumor processes of this localization.

Abdominal tuberculosis: demonstration of tubercle bacilli in tissues and experimental production of hyperplastic enteric lesions.

Material obtained from 35 cases of abdominal tuberculosis waps studied and an attempt was made to demonstrate tubercle bacilli by special staining of histological sections, culture and guinea-pig inoculation. Acid fast bacilli could be demonstrated in 80 per cent of cases. The remaining cases were also possibly due to tuberculous infection because granulomas with Langhans's type of giant cells and caseation or calcification of lymph nodes were present. The bacilli were demonstrated in bowel tissue showing non-specific histology in 1 case. In 2 other cases with non-specific lesions in the bowel
