Comparison of x-ray films and low-dose computed tomographic scans: demonstration of asbestos-related changes in 2760 nuclear weapons workers screened for lung cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Increased availability and technical improvements of computed tomographic (CT) scanning encourages its use for detecting asbestos-related disease. We compared low-dose scans and x-ray films in 2760 workers potentially exposed to asbestos, to assess their ability to detect interstitial lung disease (ILD) and pleural thickening (PT). METHODS: A total of 2760 nuclear workers received radiography and CT scanning (2006 to 2009). X-ray films were read by a B reader for ILD and PT and CT scans by a thoracic radiologist, using a protocol for nodules, ILD, and PT. RESULTS: Of the 2760 work

Stress at the second metatarsal bone after correction of hammertoe and claw toe deformity: a finite element analysis using an anatomical model.

BACKGROUND: We used finite element analysis to evaluate three techniques for the correction of hammertoe and claw toe deformities: flexor digitorum longus tendon transfer (FDLT), flexor digitorum brevis tendon transfer (FDBT), and proximal interphalangeal joint arthrodesis (PIPJA). METHODS: We performed a finite element analysis of FDLT and FDBT compared with PIPJA of the second toe using multislice computed tomography and 93 tomographic images of the foot obtained in a healthy 36-year-old man. RESULTS: The PIPJA showed a significantly higher increase in traction and compressive stresses and

Rare localization of extrarenal nephroblastoma in 1-month-old female infant.

Extrarenal occurrence of Wilms' tumor is exceptional and the diagnosis is almost always made after surgery. The exact mechanism whereby a Wilms' tumor occurs in extrarenal tissue is unknown. The tumor is most commonly located in the retroperitoneum or inguinal region. Localization in subcutaneous tissue is extremely rare. In this paper, the case of a 1-month-old female infant with an extrarenal Wilms' tumor located in the lumbosacral region is presented. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice, and the same general therapeutic rules should be followed as when the kidney is affected.

The imaging of maxillofacial trauma and its pertinence to surgical intervention.

Maxillofacial skeletal injuries account for a large proportion of emergency department visits and often result in surgical consultation. Although many of the principles of detection and repair are basic, the evolution of technology and therapeutic strategies has led to improved patient outcomes. This article aims to provide a review of the imaging aspects involved in maxillofacial trauma and to delineate its relevance to management.

Congenital subclavian steal syndrome associated with heterotaxy syndrome and atrioventricular septal defect.

An infant under follow-up evaluation since the fetal stage was detected to have subclavian steal syndrome (SSS) associated with heterotaxy syndrome and atrioventricular septal defect. Such a complex association has not been reported previously. Congenital SSS occurs as a result of a subclavian artery originating from the main pulmonary artery through the ductus instead of the aortic arch. In rare cases, as in the reported case, it may occur due to proximal segment atresia of the left subclavian artery.

A systematic review of contrast-enhanced computed tomography calcium scoring methodologies and impact of aortic valve calcium burden on TAVI clinical outcomes.

Different methodologies have been used to assess the role of AV calcification (AVC) on TAVI outcomes. This systematic review aims to describe the burden of AVC, synthesize the different methods of calcium score quantification, and evaluate the impact of AVC on outcomes after TAVI. We included studies of TAVI patients who had reported AV calcium scoring by contrast-enhanced multidetector CT and the Agatston method. The impact of calcification on TAVI outcomes without restrictions on follow-up time or outcome type was evaluated. Results were reported descriptively, and a meta-analysis was conduc

Successful repair of coronary sinus rupture presenting as cardiac tamponade following blunt chest trauma.

The isolated coronary sinus (CS) rupture causing cardiac tamponade following blunt chest trauma is a very rare and very unique traumatic form of cardiac tamponade. Prompt recognition of this injury is crucial for patient survival. CS injuries are frequently difficult to repair and are potentially lethal. A meticulous repair carried out on an arrested, empty and well-protected heart is recommended to achieve secure haemostasis and CS patency. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the successful repair of isolated CS rupture following blunt chest trauma.

The use of chest magnetic resonance imaging in interstitial lung disease: a systematic review.

Thin-slices multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) plays a key role in the differential diagnosis of interstitial lung disease (ILD). However, thin-slices MDCT has a limited ability to detect active inflammation, which is an important target of newly developed ILD drug therapy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), thanks to its multi-parameter capability, provides better tissue characterisation than thin-slices MDCT.Our aim was to summarise the current status of MRI applications in ILD and to propose an ILD-MRI protocol. A systematic literature search was conducted for relevant studies on ches
