Deep multi-scale location-aware 3D convolutional neural networks for automated detection of lacunes of presumed vascular origin.

Lacunes of presumed vascular origin (lacunes) are associated with an increased risk of stroke, gait impairment, and dementia and are a primary imaging feature of the small vessel disease. Quantification of lacunes may be of great importance to elucidate the mechanisms behind neuro-degenerative disorders and is recommended as part of study standards for small vessel disease research. However, due to the different appearance of lacunes in various brain regions and the existence of other similar-looking structures, such as perivascular spaces, manual annotation is a difficult, elaborative and sub

Fooling the brain by mirroring the hand: Brain correlates of the perceptual capture of limb ownership.

BACKGROUND: Mirror therapy (MT) is an increasingly employed method aimed at reducing phantom pain and other negative sensations following loss of a limb or damage to sensorimotor systems. However, the brain processes associated with the perception of limb ownership, a key correlate of MT, are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether transient perceptions of limb ownership together with associated neural activity can be elucidated using a purpose-developed mirror reflection task combined with electrophysiological (EEG) measures and cutting-edge analyses. METHODS: Brain activity was measured onl

Self-organizing neural network-based generative AI with embedded error inflation control enhances effective knowledge extraction from preclinical studies with reduced sample size.

Small sample sizes in preclinical research limit the extraction of reliable knowledge and hinder translational progress. We propose genESOM, a generative artificial intelligence method based on emergent self‑organizing maps. genESOM is designed to augment small biomedical datasets while controlling α‑error inflation. It separates structure learning from data synthesis and integrates error propagation mitigation through dimensionality modulation, enabling safe and interpretable data augmentation. Using lipid signaling data from a preclinical multiple sclerosis study employing the experimental a

Revealing disease-associated pathways by network integration of untargeted metabolomics.

Uncovering the molecular context of dysregulated metabolites is crucial to understand pathogenic pathways. However, their system-level analysis has been limited owing to challenges in global metabolite identification. Most metabolite features detected by untargeted metabolomics carried out by liquid-chromatography-mass spectrometry cannot be uniquely identified without additional, time-consuming experiments. We report a network-based approach, prize-collecting Steiner forest algorithm for integrative analysis of untargeted metabolomics (PIUMet), that infers molecular pathways and components vi

A methodology for accurate benchmarking of neural network accelerators using a high-level synthesis-based hardware generator.

As neural network models continue to grow in scale and complexity, specialized hardware accelerators have emerged to meet the increased demand for compute and memory. These accelerators employ a wide range of architectural innovations, making it challenging to perform fair comparisons and isolate the impact of specific design decisions. Traditional evaluation metrics, such as tera operations per second (TOPS) and TOPS per watt (TOPS/W), are heavily influenced by external factors such as technology node, clock frequency, the scale of the design and workload variations, limiting their effectiven

Hierarchical learning creates invariant schema within plastic neural networks.

Cognitive neural circuits must balance the plasticity needed for continual learning with the stability needed to preserve an underlying reasoning framework, called a schema. How circuit learning rules form and protect such schemata from being continually overwritten during learning remains unknown. On a visual boundary detection task, we show that a hierarchical learning algorithm creates an invariant schema circuit whose weights remain fixed following sparse initial training, with additional data serving to refine the upstream representation. In contrast, the end-to-end backpropagation algori

Optimizing deep CNN architecture via hybrid Harris Hawks arithmetic algorithm for EEG meditation classification.

Meditation is a widely recognized practice that enhances mental well-being and cognitive function. Despite advances in EEG meditation neuroscience, challenges persist in extracting robust and interpretable features from complex, non-stationary EEG signals. Existing classification methods often rely on limited feature sets and traditional machine learning approaches. These methods lack comprehensive integration of advanced time-frequency analysis, deep learning, and modern nature-inspired optimization techniques. To address this gap, we introduce a hybrid EEG-based theta-band meditation classif

Deep learning for the change-point Cox model with current status data.

This study develops estimation methods for a deep partially linear Cox proportional hazards model with a change point under current status data, aiming to accommodate complex change-point effects. Prior work has largely relied on linear models, which may inadequately capture relationships among multivariate covariates and thus hinder accurate change-point detection. To address this, we use a deep neural network to model covariate effects within the Cox framework and propose a maximum likelihood estimation procedure for the model. We establish asymptotic properties of the resulting estimators,

A hybrid deep learning approach integrating CNN and transformer for lung cancer classification using CT scans.

Lung cancer is an extremely fatal kind of cancer, resulting in the deaths of almost 7.6 million individuals annually around the globe. Nevertheless, a timely diagnosis is a crucial necessity for enhancing the likelihood of human survival. Regarding tumor identification, CT scans are normally used to identify affected areas. Nevertheless, CT imaging face significant problems such as poor visibility of tumor locations and high false negative rates. The small dataset size of medical imaging makes it challenging to capture local lesion features by iterative training, considering all input features

Enhanced Precision of Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) Analysis Using Neural Network-Based Nuclear Segmentation for Digital Microscopy Samples.

Introduction: Accurate nuclear segmentation is essential for the reliable diagnostic interpretation of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) results. However, automated 2D digital algorithms often fail in samples with dense or overlapping nuclei, such as lymphomas, due to the loss of spatial depth information. Here, we tested if AI-based 3D nuclear segmentation can improve the accuracy, reproducibility, and diagnostic reliability of FISH reading in critical situations. Materials and Methods: Formalin-fixed follicular lymphoma sections were FISH-labeled for BCL2 gene rearrangements and digi

Neural Network-Based System for Rapid Diagnostic Decision Support Using FLIM Data: Segmentation and Classification in Liver, Skin, and Pancreatic Tissues.

Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) is a powerful tool for analyzing metabolic changes by measuring the fluorescence lifetime of endogenous fluorophores such as the reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (phosphate) (NAD(P)H), enabling differentiation between normal and pathological states in diverse tissues. However, traditional manual FLIM data processing suffers from several drawbacks, including subjective selection of regions of interest, variability in analysis parameters, time-consuming procedures, and inherent human bias. To address these limitations, we developed

Improving dental disease diagnosis using a cross attention based hybrid model of DeiT and CoAtNet.

Accurate dental diagnosis is essential for effective treatment planning and improving patient outcomes, particularly in identifying various dental diseases, such as cavities, fillings, implants, and impacted teeth. This study proposes a new hybrid model that integrates the strengths of the data-efficient image transformer (DeiT) and convolutional attention network (CoAtNet) to enhance diagnostic accuracy. Our approach's first step involves preprocessing dental radiographic images to improve their quality and enhance feature extraction. The model employs a cross-attention fusion mechanism that

VariMix: A variety-guided data mixing framework for explainable medical image classifications.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Modern deep neural networks are highly over-parameterized, necessitating the use of data augmentation techniques to prevent overfitting and enhance generalization. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are popular for synthesizing visually realistic images. However, these synthetic images often lack diversity and may have ambiguous class labels. Recent data mixing strategies address some of these issues by mixing image labels based on salient regions. Since the main diagnostic information is not always contained within the salient regions, we aim to address the resul

Human-robot interaction (HRI) is a crucial component in the field of robotics, and enabling faster response, higher accuracy, as well as smaller human effort, is essential to improve the efficiency, robustness, and applicability of HRI-driven tasks. In this article, we develop a novel neuroadaptive admittance control with human motion intention (HMI) estimation and output error constraint for natural and stable interaction. First, the interaction force information of the robot is utilized to predict the HMI and the stiffness in the admittance model is dynamically updated based on surface elect

Application of improved graph convolutional network for cortical surface parcellation.

Accurate cortical surface parcellation is essential for elucidating brain organizational principles, functional mechanisms, and the neural substrates underlying higher cognitive and emotional processes. However, the cortical surface is a highly folded complex geometry, and large regional variations make the analysis of surface data challenging. Current methods rely on geometric simplification, such as spherical expansion, which takes hours for spherical mapping and registration, a popular but costly process that does not take full advantage of inherent structural information. In this study, we

Design of a deep fusion model for early Parkinson's disease prediction using handwritten image analysis.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a deteriorating condition that mostly affects older people. The lack of conclusive treatment for PD makes diagnosis very challenging. However, using patterns like tremors for early diagnosis, handwriting analysis has become a useful diagnostic technique. This work aims to improve early PD diagnosis by proposing a hybrid deep fusion model that blends ResNet-50 and GoogLeNet (RGG-Net). We demonstrated the RGG-Net model in a series of steps such as preprocessing images, ResNet-50 and GoogLeNet models for feature extraction, combining the features using the Adaptive Fea
