Cholinesterase inhibition modulates visual and attentional brain responses in Alzheimer's disease and health.

Visuo-attentional deficits occur early in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and are considered more responsive to pro-cholinergic therapy than characteristic memory disturbances. We hypothesised that neural responses in AD during visuo-attentional processing would be impaired relative to controls, yet partially susceptible to improvement with the cholinesterase inhibitor physostigmine. We studied 16 mild AD patients and 17 age-matched healthy controls, using fMRI-scanning to enable within-subject placebo-controlled comparisons of effects of physostigmine on stimulus- and attention- related brain activa

Impact of SMART Board technology: an investigation of sight word reading and observational learning.

The effects of SMART Board technology, an interactive electronic whiteboard, and a 3s constant time delay (CTD) procedure was evaluated for teaching sight word reading to students with moderate intellectual disabilties within a small group arrangment. A multiple probe design across three word sets and replicated with three students was used to evaluate the effectiveness of SMART Board technology on: (a) reading target grocery words; (b) matching grocery item photos to target grocery words; (c) reading other students' target grocery words through observational learning; and (d) matching grocery

A critique of functional localisers.

In this critique, we review the usefulness of functional localising scans in functional MRI studies. We consider their conceptual motivations and the implications for experimental design and inference. Functional localisers can often be viewed as acquiring data from cells that have been removed from an implicit factorial design. This perspective reveals their potentially restrictive nature. We deconstruct two examples from the recent literature to highlight the key issues. We conclude that localiser scans can be unnecessary and, in some instances, lead to a biased and inappropriately constrain

Endogenous testosterone concentration, mental rotation, and size of the corpus callosum in a sample of young Hungarian women.

In the present study brain laterality, hemispheric communication, and mental rotation performance were examined. A sample of 33 women were tested for a possible linear relationship of testosterone level and mental rotation with structural background of the brain. Subjects with a smaller splenial area of corpus callosum tended to have lower levels of testosterone (r =.37, p<.05). However, there were no significant differences in mean scores of mental rotation of object and hand between groups with high and low levels of testosterone. There was a significant difference in relative size of the 6t

Oscillatory characteristics of face-evoked neuromagnetic responses.

To study the oscillatory activities during face processing, we recorded magnetoencephalographic responses in 8 healthy subjects to upright and inverted human faces, and obtained the time-frequency representation by using wavelet transform. Delta to beta activities were clearly increased at 140-210 ms after stimulus onset in the bilateral occipitotemporal (OT) areas (t(7)>5.5; p<0.001), with larger power for theta, alpha and beta over the right side. Notably, more increase alpha activity for inverted than upright face condition was observed in the right OT area. Our results suggest that 4-25 Hz

Individual differences in FFA activity suggest independent processing at different spatial scales.

The brain processes images at different spatial scales, but it is unclear how far into the visual stream different scales remain segregated. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we found evidence that BOLD activity in the fusiform face area (FFA) reflects computations based on separate spatial frequency inputs. When subjects perform different tasks (attend location vs. identity; attend whole vs. parts) or the same task with different stimuli (upright or inverted) with high- and low-pass images of cars and faces, individual differences in the FFA in one condition are correlated with tho

A double dissociation of ventromedial prefrontal cortical responses to sad and happy stimuli in depressed and healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) is a region implicated in the assessment of the rewarding potential of stimuli and may be dysfunctional in major depressive disorder (MDD). The few studies examining prefrontal cortical responses to emotive stimuli in MDD have indicated increased VMPFC responses to pleasant images but decreased responses to sad mood provocation when compared with healthy individuals. We wished to corroborate these results by examining neural responses to personally relevant happy and sad stimuli in MDD and healthy individuals within the same paradigm. MET

Left neglect dyslexia and the effect of stimulus duration.

The present study investigated the effects of the duration of the stimulus on the reading performance of right-brain-damaged patients with left neglect dyslexia. Three Italian patients read aloud words and nonwords, under conditions of unlimited time of stimulus exposure and of timed presentation. In the untimed condition, the majority of the patients' errors involved the left side of the letter string (i.e., neglect dyslexia errors). Conversely, in the timed condition, although the overall level of performance decreased, errors were more evenly distributed across the whole letter string (i.e.

Developmental dyslexics show altered allocation of attention in visual classification tasks.

OBJECTIVES: Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded to investigate allocation of attention in adult developmental dyslexics. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twelve adult developmental dyslexics and 12 matched normal controls performed three visual choice reaction tasks. In the passive oddball condition, subjects watched two different simple visual stimuli presented with 87.5 and 12.5% probability. In the active oddball condition, participants responded to the low-probability target stimulus. In the active 50/50-condition, both stimuli were presented with 50% probability and a response was r

Discrepant target detection and action monitoring in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been related to altered mechanisms of action monitoring and target detection, and it has been hypothesized that hyperactive striatal-cortical circuits constitute the underlying pathophysiology. This study used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to explore this hypothesis. A choice reaction time experiment was carried out in a group of OCD patients and a normal comparison group. The P3b component of the ERP to targets was taken as an indicator of the target-evaluation process and the response-locked error-related negativity (ERN) served as an indicator

Posttraining androgens' enhancement of cognitive performance is temporally distinct from androgens' increases in affective behavior.

Steroid hormone-induced variations in spatial learning and memory tasks have been reported. In this study, androgens' effects in various cognitive and affective tasks were investigated in order to determine whether any observed differences in cognitive performance could be due to affective changes produced by the hormones. Ovariectomized rats (N = 72) received 0.0, 3.0, or 7.5 mg/kg subcutaneously, of testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), or 5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha,17 beta-diol (3 alpha-Diol) suspended in 10% ethanol/sesame oil v/v. Amnesia following infarction in the right retrosplenial region.

We present a case of retrosplenial amnesia following an infarction in the right retrosplenial region. A 62-year-old male showed mild weakness of the left hand, dizziness and gait disturbance. He also noticed that he could not perceive objects that he saw as real, but could perceive an object as real only by touching it. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed an infarction in the splenium of the corpus callosum and retrosplenial region on the right side. There was no aphasia or apraxia, but mild topographic disturbance was present. Intelligence was normal, but amnesia was noted. Both verbal an

Evidence of altered dominance in children with congenital spastic hemiplegia.

The study aimed at investigating lateralization effects and signs of transfer and crowding in children with congenital lateralized brain damage with the aid of a dichotic listening test, a chimeric test, and verbal and nonverbal neuropsychological tests. Thirty-three children with spastic hemiplegia and 86 control children (age 5.0-12.0 yr) were assessed. Children with left-hemisphere damage (n = 17) were found to have a pathological left-ear advantage for verbal material, and children with right-hemisphere damage (n = 16) were found to have a pathological right visual half-field advantage for

Integrative agnosia following progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

A 43 year-old man with presumed progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy developed difficulty recognizing objects and faces in the presence of adequate visual acuity and visual fields. His copying and matching of line drawings was intact, suggesting that his agnosia was associative. However, he had difficulty perceiving overlapping forms and drawings of single objects as integrated wholes. Unlike control subjects, he made fewer errors identifying silhouettes compared to line drawings with internal details. These alterations, together with his feature-by-feature descriptions of objects and co

Long-term abstinent alcoholics have normal memory.

It is generally believed that many non-Korsakoff alcoholics have subtle defects in memory. To determine whether such defects vary as a function of length of abstinence (LOA), we performed extensive memory testing with: (1) recently detoxified (n = 31; LOA-29 days); (2) intermediate-term abstinent (n = 28; LOA = 1.9 years); (3) long-term abstinent (n = 32; LOA-7.0 years) alcoholics; and (4) nonalcoholic controls (n = 37). All subjects were matched on age and education. Alcoholics were matched on years of alcoholic drinking. Memory measures were divided into the following domains: verbal learnin

Pantomime comprehension and ideomotor apraxia.

In a prior study it was shown that apraxic patients with posterior infarctions that included the parietal lobe could not discriminate between gestures. In this study these observations were replicated using a nonverbal paradigm in which the subjects did not have to discriminate between gestures, but instead had to comprehend their meaning. Pantomimed acts on videotape were shown to six apraxic-aphasic patients, seven nonapraxic-aphasic patients, and six normal subjects. Four drawings were also shown, one of which matched the pantomime (for example, if the pantomime was of hammering, one drawin

Sigma-movement and optokinetic nystagmus elicited by stroboscopically illuminated stereopatterns.

Sigma-movement is an apparent movement seen when a stationary periodic visual pattern of the period PS is illuminated stroboscopically at the flash frequency fS and smooth gaze pursuit eye movements are performed across the pattern at an angular velocity Ve = PS X fS deg X S-1. Sigma-movement leads to an optokinetic nystagmus (Sigma OKN) which in turn sustains Sigma-movement perception. (1) Sigma-movement was also seen in an apparent three-dimensional periodic stripe pattern generated by two periodic monocular stimulus patterns with a certain degree of horizontal binocular disparity. (2) Sigma

Prosopagnosia: a double dissociation between the recognition of familiar and unfamiliar faces.

Two cases of a dissociation between prosopagnosia and impaired capacity to match familiar faces were studied. Recognition of familiar faces recovered in the first patient, whereas prosopagnosia persisted in the second patient despite recovery of matching unfamiliar faces and other visuoperceptive skills. This double dissociation is discussed in relation to current views of prosopagnosia.

Distinct memory profiles in Alzheimer's disease.

Memory impairment is a prominent defining feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the degree to which the profile of memory impairment is uniform across patients is not fully resolved. The study examined patterns of memory impairment in a large cohort of AD patients, with particular attention to the relationship between working and long-term declarative memory. Tests of working memory, visual and verbal recall and recognition, and recent personal memory were administered to 67 AD patients in the early to moderate stages of disease and to 30 age-matched controls. Performance on all measures wa
