A subspecies of Naegleria australiensis, N. australiensis italica, pathogenic for mice, was recently isolated and identified from an Italian thermal spa. We describe the histopathological changes of the central nervous system with experimental infection of albino mice. The histopathological patterns are intermediate to those seen with infection caused by N. fowleri and N. australiensis or Acanthamoeba spp. An acute inflammatory reaction was present within the choroid plexus, ependyma, midbrain, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. Occasional single amebic trophozoites were found within some microabs

With few exceptions, the parasitic pneumonias most commonly encountered in the Western Hemisphere are diseases of compromised hosts; patients with AIDS are at particular risk. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia occurs eventually in 80% of AIDS patients; bronchoalveolar lavage is quite sensitive in establishing this diagnosis. Toxoplasma gondii pneumonia, seen most often in the patient with AIDS, is characterized by multisystem involvement. Strongyloides stercoralis infection is endemic in the Southeastern United States. Pulmonary strongyloidiasis is seen in patients receiving glucocorticoids or ch

Dientamoeba fragilis is a protozoan parasite of the large intestine of man. Individuals with infection may be asymptomatic or have gastrointestinal and systemic symptoms. We report a patient with symptomatic D. fragilis infection and negative extensive laboratory and radiological workup, with resolution of symptoms after diiodohydroxyquin therapy. No parasites were detected in three follow-up stool examinations. We then undertook retrospective study to define and describe further clinical symptoms in adults with this infection by analysis of data from medical records of 50 subjects with this p

The virulence of 70 isolates of Entamoeba histolytica was studied in the Wistar strain of albino rat by intracaecal inoculation of amoebae. The results were evaluated by the Neal scoring system, histopathological grading of ulcers and virulence indices. It was found that isolates from acute amoebic cases could infect and produce ulcers in significantly more animals than could the isolates from asymptomatic cyst passers. The virulence indices of isolates from acute cases were also significantly higher as compared to those from asymptomatic cyst passers. However, there was no significant differe
