The indications for keratoplasty at Moorfields Eye Hospital were reviewed for the period 1985-1987. There were 500 consecutive cases of which 472 underwent penetrating keratoplasty and 28 lamellar keratoplasty; of the grafts performed 31 were acute procedures. The most common indication for penetrating keratoplasty was keratoconus accounting for 34.2% of cases and for lamellar keratoplasty corneal dystrophies accounting for 28.6% of cases. Cystoid macular edema frequently complicates recovery from cataract surgery. Our understanding of this disease would be enhanced by more sensitive and quantitative methods to evaluate it. We performed vitreous fluorophotometry in 66 nondiabetic patients who had recently undergone cataract surgery. Eyes with definite macular edema on fluorescein angiography were ranked according to the severity of the leakage. Focal electroretinograms (FERG), pattern electroretinograms (PERG), and visual evoked potentials (VEP) were studied in a group of 30 aphakic patients with cystoid macular oedema (ACME). When compared with a control group of age-matched aphakics, 35% of patients were found to have abnormal FERG responses and 53%--over half of whom had normal FERG responses--showed abnormal PERG amplitudes. Ocular blood flow was measured in aphakic rabbit eyes using a radioactive microsphere technique following sub-chronic three times a day treatment with one of the following drugs: ecothiophate iodide (0.125%), pilocarpine (4%), epinephrine (2%), norepinephrine (2%) or timolol (0.5%). PURPOSE: To evaluate changes in central corneal thickness (CCT) and intraocular pressure (IOP) in children after surgery for congenital cataracts and to investigate the association between CCT and IOP.

We retrospectively evaluated the clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes of 20 pseudophakic retinal detachment (RD) patients (20 eyes) and 17 aphakic RD patients (17 eyes). Males were predominated in both groups. The time interval between cataract extraction and RD was 31 months on average in the pseudophakic group, 32 months with intact posterior capsule and 27 months with ruptured posterior capsule, and 148 months in the aphakic group. PURPOSE: Penetration of ceftazidime, a third generation cephalosporin, into the vitreous cavity after intravenous administration was investigated.
METHODS: Because antimicrobial penetration varies with surgical status of the eye and with inflammation, studies were conducted in phakic, aphakic, and aphakic, vitrectomized eyes in both normal and inflamed conditions. BACKGROUND: Extracapsular cataract extraction with implantation of a posterior chamber lens (ECCE+PCL) lowers intraocular pressure (IOP) in most eyes. However it is believed that this effect vanishes with time.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We measured IOP by Goldmann applanation tonometry in both eyes of 100 consecutive patients who were either bilaterally phakic, unilaterally pseudophakic or bilaterally pseudophakic.
