Two species C. carrionii and C. bantianum are important in medical mycology and are respectively the etiologic agents of chromomycosis and brain abcess. Other species such C. oxysporum and C. cladosporioides have been isolated from keratitis, further more the latter species has been isolated from a pulmonary ball. C. sphaerospermum has been recovered from nail scrapings. The role of C. herbarum, isolated from skin lesion is questionable.

Complications of otitic origin are still possible despite introduction of antibiotica. The number, however, has been reduced not only because of better conservative treatment but because of early operations in acute and chronic suppurative otitis media. 232 patients with otitic pathology showed in 173 cases affections of the labyrinthine and in 59 cases intracranial complications. Statistical results of the different findings before and after operations are given and discussed.

Twenty-two cases of sub-tentorium cerebral abscesses were observed in children. The first clinical symptoms were those of intracranial hypertension, disorders of consciousness, specially somnolence, fever and low general condition. Focal neurological signs were frequent but appeared later. A cerebral abscess should be suspected when such symptoms occur in children with heart disease or with respiratory infection. Simple investigations like examination of the fundi, X-ray of the skull and EEG give valuable clues. In case of such a clinical picture, lumbar puncture is useless and often dangerous

Allescheria boydii, a true fungus frequently isolated from soil, is best known as a causative agent of maduromycosis of the foot. In our report we describe two patients under treatment for acute leukemia who died from rapidly progressive A. boydii infections. One patient had signs of central nervous system infection and was found at autopsy to have had a large brain abscess. The second patient had a cavitary necrotizing pneumonia with thoracic inlet obstruction (Pancoast's syndrome) and failed to show improvement despite treatment with amphotericin B. The clinical spectrum of allescheriasis is…

AIM: To compare thе medical history, clinical features, composition of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), results of laboratory and instrumental examinations of patients with acute neuroinfections and differentiable diseases including a pseudoinflammatory variant of the acute stage of uncomplicated subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), consequences of traumatic brain injury (traumatic SAH, SAN combination with secondary purulent meningitis, posttraumatic nasal liquorrhea, intracerebral hematomas), abscesses and tumors of the brain, lymphoma with proven CNS. These diagnoses were mistakenly made to patients ad

Sir Victor Horsley's lecture "On the Technique of Operations on the Central Nervous System," delivered in Toronto in 1906, set the stage for an appraisal of Sir William Osler as a protagonist for the emerging specialty of neurosurgery. During his time at McGill University from 1871 to 1884, Osler performed more than 1000 autopsies. Hispathological reports covered the topics of cerebral aneurysm, apoplectic hemorrhage, vascular infarction, subdural hematoma, meningitis, multiple sclerosis, cerebral abscess, and brain tumor. He wrote about cerebral localization and anatomy and the relationships

BACKGROUND: Nocardiosis is an opportunistic infection caused by aerobic, Gram-positive actinomycetes of the genus Nocardia that most often affects patients with impaired cell-mediated immunity, including those receiving corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive therapies. Disseminated disease frequently involves the central nervous system, where a systematic review reported an overall case fatality rate of 22.8%, and Nocardia farcinica is the most commonly identified species. We report a case of disseminated Nocardia farcinica with multiple cerebral abscesses in a patient receiving induction

BACKGROUND: Melioidosis is an established endemic infection in Sri Lanka, caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, a gram negative bacterium distributed in saprophytes in soil and surface water. Main mode of transmission is via percutaneous inoculation. Pneumonia is the most common presentation in acute disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 33 year old previously healthy Sinhalese female with an occupational exposure to surface water in paddy fields, who was on postpartum day 6 following an uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery via an elective caesarian section. She presented with a 1 day histor

BACKGROUND: Nocardia brevicatena (N. brevicatena) is an uncommon cause of brain infections, frequently mistaken for intracranial tuberculosis, especially in patients with a tuberculosis (TB) history, leading to improper treatment. This case report outlines the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of a patient with multiple brain abscesses from N. brevicatena after laryngeal TB, highlighting the importance of next-generation sequencing (NGS) for accurate diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report details a 55-year-old man with a history of TB. Symptoms included dizziness, headache, and unsteady g…

Microascus gracilis is a specie of the genus Microascus in the family of Microascaceae and has been isolated from lung. It has never been reported as the cause of disseminated infection in humans. Herein, we report a fatal case of disseminated Microascus gracilis infection in a 65-year-old man with a history of primary idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, status-post bilateral lung transplant. His course was complicated by donor lung cultures positive for multiple organisms and persistent pleural effusions. Multiple lung biopsy and bronchial lavage specimens were negative for mold. Later, pleural fl
