Neurophysiological analytics for all! Free open-source software tools for documenting, analyzing, visualizing, and sharing using electronic notebooks.

Neurophysiology requires an extensive workflow of information analysis routines, which often includes incompatible proprietary software, introducing limitations based on financial costs, transfer of data between platforms, and the ability to share. An ecosystem of free open-source software exists to fill these gaps, including thousands of analysis and plotting packages written in Python and R, which can be implemented in a sharable and reproducible format, such as the Jupyter electronic notebook. This tool chain can largely replace current routines by importing data, producing analyses, and ge

Volumetric study of sphenoid sinuses: anatomical analysis in helical computed tomography.

PURPOSE: The sphenoid sinus is the most inaccessible part of the face, being inside the sphenoid bone and closely related to numerous vital neural and vascular structures. The objective of this study was to analyze and evaluate the variation of anatomy and the volume of the sphenoid sinus using helical computed tomography and medical imaging software. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 47 helical CT scans of sinuses of male and female individuals aged 18-86 years were selected. The images were formatted using ITK-SNAP software, consisting of three steps: (1) segmentation; (2) volumetric analys

A Low-Cost iPhone-Assisted Augmented Reality Solution for the Localization of Intracranial Lesions.

BACKGROUND: Precise location of intracranial lesions before surgery is important, but occasionally difficult. Modern navigation systems are very helpful, but expensive. A low-cost solution that could locate brain lesions and their surface projections in augmented reality would be beneficial. We used an iPhone to partially achieve this goal, and evaluated its accuracy and feasibility in a clinical neurosurgery setting. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We located brain lesions in 35 patients, and using an iPhone, we depicted the lesion's surface projection onto the skin of the head. To assess th

[Electronic eikonometer: Measurement tests displayed on stereoscopic screen].

We propose the presentation on a stereoscopic screen of the electronic eikonometer tests intended for analysis and measurement of perceptual effects of binocular disparity. These tests, so-called "built-in magnification tests" are constructed according to the same principle as those of preceding eikonometers (disparity variation parameters being included in each test presentation, which allows, for test observation and measurements during the examination, the removing of any intermediate optical system). The images of these tests are presented separately to each eye, according to active or pas

Establishing the biomechanical properties of the pelvic soft tissues through an inverse finite element analysis using magnetic resonance imaging.

The mechanical characteristics of the female pelvic floor are relevant when explaining pelvic dysfunction. The decreased elasticity of the tissue often causes inability to maintain urethral position, also leading to vaginal and rectal descend when coughing or defecating as a response to an increase in the internal abdominal pressure. These conditions can be associated with changes in the mechanical properties of the supportive structures-namely, the pelvic floor muscles-including impairment. In this work, we used an inverse finite element analysis to calculate the material constants for the pa

A novel specimen-specific methodology to optimise the alignment of long bones for experimental testing.

The choice of coordinate system and alignment of bone will affect the quantification of mechanical properties obtained during in-vitro biomechanical testing. Where these are used in predictive models, such as finite element analysis, the fidelic description of these properties is paramount. Currently in bending and torsional tests, bones are aligned on a pre-defined fixed span based on the reference system marked out. However, large inter-specimen differences have been reported. This suggests a need for the development of a specimen-specific alignment system for use in experimental work. Eleve

CFD analysis on gas distribution for different scrubber redirection configurations in sump cut.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Office of Mine Safety and Health Research recently developed a series of models using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the gas distribution around a continuous mining machine with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations. CFD models using Species Transport Model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100 percent of the discharge r

Oral steroids and intraoperative bleeding during endoscopic sinus surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Our main objective was to investigate the effect of preoperative oral steroids on intraoperative bleeding and quality of the surgical field during endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Our second objective was to determine whether the osteitis score could be used to predict the volume of intraoperative bleeding. METHODOLOGY: This double-blinded, randomized trial included 65 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. The corticosteroid group received oral prednisolone (1 mg/kg), administered to patients once daily for 2 days and then tapered down, with treatment completed on

Design optimisation for pharmacokinetic modeling of a cocktail of phenotyping drugs.

Our paper proposes a methodological strategy to select optimal sampling designs for phenotyping studies including a cocktail of drugs. A cocktail approach is of high interest to determine the simultaneous activity of enzymes responsible for drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, therefore useful in anticipating drug-drug interactions and in personalized medicine. Phenotyping indexes, which are area under the concentration-time curves, can be derived from a few samples using nonlinear mixed effect models and maximum a posteriori estimation. Because of clinical constraints in phenotyping studies,

Incidence and lifetime costs of injuries in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Standardized methodologies for assessing economic burden of injury at the national or international level do not exist. OBJECTIVE: To measure national incidence, medical costs, and productivity losses of medically treated injuries using the most recent data available in the United States, as a case study for similarly developed countries undertaking economic burden analyses. METHOD: The authors combined several data sets to estimate the incidence of fatal and non-fatal injuries in 2000. They computed unit medical and productivity costs and multiplied these costs by corresponding

The push and pull of grief: Approach and avoidance in bereavement.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prolonged Grief (PG) is recognized as a post-bereavement syndrome that is associated with significant impairment. Although approach and avoidance tendencies have both been hypothesized to play key roles in maintaining PG symptoms, understanding of these relationships has been limited by a reliance on self-report methodology. This study applies an experimental paradigm to simultaneously investigate the relationship between PG severity and approach-avoidance behavioral tendencies. METHODS: Fifty-five bereaved individuals with and without PG completed a behavioral meas

Hybrid in Silico/in Vitro Approach for the Identification of Angiotensin I Converting Enzyme Inhibitory Peptides from Parma Dry-Cured Ham.

The bioactivity assessment of foodborne peptides is currently a research area of great relevance, and, in particular, several studies are devoted to the antihypertensive effects through the inhibition of angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE). In the present work, a straightforward workflow to identify inhibitory peptides from food matrices is proposed, which involves a hybrid in vitro/in silico tandem approach. Parma dry-cured ham was chosen as case study. In particular, the advantage of using the hybrid approach to identify active sequences (in comparison to the experimental trials alone) has

Control of the sheep blowfly in Australia and New Zealand--are we there yet?

The last 50 years of research into infections in Australia and New Zealand caused by larvae of the sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina, have significantly advanced our understanding of this blowfly and its primary host, the sheep. However, apart from some highly effective drugs it could be argued that no new control methodologies have resulted. This review addresses the major areas of sheep blowfly research over this period describing the significant outcomes and analyses, and what is still required to produce new commercial control technologies. The use of drugs against this fly species has been v

ACR Appropriateness Criteria® acute pancreatitis.

The American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria are evidence-based guidelines for specific clinical conditions that are reviewed every two years by a multidisciplinary expert panel. The guideline development and review include an extensive analysis of current medical literature from peer reviewed journals and the application of a well-established consensus methodology (modified Delphi) to rate the appropriateness of imaging and treatment procedures by the panel. In those instances where evidence is lacking or not definitive, expert opinion may be used to recommend imaging or treatme

Patient-centered imaging: shared decision making for cardiac imaging procedures with exposure to ionizing radiation.

The current paper details the recommendations arising from an NIH-NHLBI/NCI-sponsored symposium held in November 2012, aiming to identify key components of a radiation accountability framework fostering patient-centered imaging and shared decision-making in cardiac imaging. Symposium participants, working in 3 tracks, identified key components of a framework to target critical radiation safety issues for the patient, the laboratory, and the larger population of patients with known or suspected cardiovascular disease. The use of ionizing radiation during an imaging procedure should be disclosed

ACR appropriateness criteria® hemoptysis.

Although hemoptysis is often self-limited and benign in origin, it can be an indicator of serious disease including bronchiectasis, granulomatous infection, and malignancy. Hemoptysis severity can be graded on the basis of the quantity of expectorated blood: <30 mL of hemoptysis as minor, 30 to 300 mL as moderate to severe (major), and >300 to 400 mL in 24 hours as massive. Among patients with hemoptysis, chest radiographs are often abnormal and can guide evaluation. The overall risk for malignancy in patients with normal radiographs is low but may be as much as 5% to 10% in patients with >30
