Paternal Breastfeeding Involvement, Paternal-Infant Attachment, and Breastfeeding Outcomes: A Prospective Cohort Study.

RESEARCH AIM: To examine the relationship between paternal breastfeeding involvement and paternal-infant attachment with exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and total breastfeeding duration. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study included fathers of 1-month-old infants recruited through convenience sampling. Paternal breastfeeding involvement was assessed using the Partner Breastfeeding Influence Scale (PBIS). Paternal-infant attachment, paternal depressive symptoms, and marital adjustment were evaluated using validated instruments. Assessments were conducted at 1, 6, and 12 months po

Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex: The Psychoneurobiology of the Breastfeeding Experience.

Breastfeeding, given its biochemical and physiological basis, is known for its many benefits for both the lactating mother and the infant. Among the many challenges new breastfeeding mothers experience is the feeling of aversion in response to their newborn's suckling which has been termed dysphoric milk-ejection reflex (D-MER). Characterized by intense feelings of dysphoria which may eventually interfere with the mother's ability to breastfeed regularly, evidence suggests both the neurobiological and psychological basis of D-MER in an attempt to explain its complexity. Biologically, breastfee

Disentangling the Genetic Landscape of Peripartum Depression: A Multi-Polygenic Machine Learning Approach on an Italian Sample.

BACKGROUND: The genetic determinants of peripartum depression (PPD) are not fully understood. Using a multi-polygenic score approach, we characterized the relationship between genome-wide information and the history of PPD in patients with mood disorders, with the hypothesis that multiple polygenic risk scores (PRSs) could potentially influence the development of PPD. METHODS: We calculated 341 PRSs for 178 parous mood disorder inpatients affected by major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BD) with (n = 62) and without (n = 116) a history of PPD. We used partial least squares reg

Food insecurity and postnatal depression: the mediating effect of perceived social support among women in Khayelitsha, South Africa.

PURPOSE: Understanding the mechanisms through which poverty influences perinatal depression can provide insight into how to develop interventions to improve maternal mental health. To address this question, we aim to estimate indirect effects of important mediators on the causal relationship between food insecurity and symptoms of postnatal depression. METHODS: We used data from the control arm of the Africa Focus on Intervention Research for Mental health - South Africa (AFFIRM-SA) trial that included pregnant women with perinatal depression. Interventional effects (used for models that may

Chronic consequences of accidental dural puncture and postdural puncture headache in obstetric anaesthesia - sieving through the evidence.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Accidental dural puncture (ADP) and postdural puncture headache (PDPH) are relatively common complications of neuraxial anaesthesia and analgesia in obstetrics. Both may result in acute and chronic morbidity. This review intends to discuss the chronic implications of ADP and PDPH and raise awareness of severe and potentially life-threatening conditions associated with them. RECENT FINDINGS: ADP may be associated with a high rate of PDPH, prolonged hospitalization and increased readmissions. Studies have shown that PDPH may lead to chronic complications such as post-partum d

Maternal burn-out: an exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal burn-out is a psychological, emotional and physiological condition resulting from the accumulation of various stressors characterised by a moderate but also a chronic and repetitive dimension. Little research has focused on this syndrome. OBJECTIVE: The current study aims to assess maternal burn-out rate and to identify factors associated with this state of exhaustion. METHOD: 263 French mothers aged between 20 and 49 years answered five scales quantifying maternal burn-out, perceived social support, parental stress, depression and anxiety symptoms and history of postn

Breastfeeding: factors associated with the continuation of breastfeeding, the current situation in Japan, and recommendations for further research.

There are a number of research reports that address the various advantages that breastfeeding brings to mothers and children, as well as to families and society, and in addition to a number of physically positive effects, breastfeeding has an important role in terms of mental and psychological effects.Ninety-five % of mothers desire to breastfeed, which reflects social acceptance, but the actual breastfeeding rate of the first month after childbirth is 42%, which accounts for about a half of all mothers. Breastfeeding is a natural behavior, but it cannot be performed only by instinct, so mothe

Types and characteristics of short-term course of depression after delivery: using Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale.

In order to clarify the prevalence and clinical features of so-called "maternity blues" and the relationship with depression after delivery, we conducted a prospective study on 220 mothers using the Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale (ZSDS) 4-7 days after childbirth and again one month after childbirth. Their physical condition during their pregnancy had been evaluated earlier. As in a previous epidemiological study conducted in Japan, we classified subjects with a ZSDS score of 60 and over as a high scoring group. Eighteen mothers (8.18%) fell into this group ("maternity blues" group) in the

Integration of stepped care for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders among women attending maternal and child health clinics in Kenya: Protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) cause substantial morbidity and mortality globally. Kenya, like many low- and middle-income countries, experiences severe shortage of specialized mental healthcare workers and poor coverage of screening and management for PMAD. Provision of screening and treatment by lay and non-specialist providers in the context of routine maternal child health services may enhance access to mental health services and improve outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In a hybrid type II cluster randomized clinical trial in 20 facilities in Western Kenya , we wil

Advanced ureteral cancer with complete remission achieved by taxan containing systemic chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Excess gestational weight gain (GWG) in pregnant adolescents is a major public health concern. Excess GWG increases risk of pregnancy complications as well as postpartum and offspring obesity and cardiometabolic disease. Prevention interventions for pregnant adults that target lifestyle modification (i.e., healthy eating/physical activity) show insufficient effectiveness. Pregnant adolescents have distinct social-emotional needs, which may contribute to excess GWG. From an interpersonal theoretical framework, conflict and low social support increase negative emotions, which in turn

Neuroserpin, IL-33 and IL-17A as potential markers of mild symptoms of depressive syndrome in Toxoplasma gondii-infected pregnant women.

INTRODUCTION: Depressive syndrome (DS) is a common complication during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and is triggered by multiple organic/genetic and environmental factors. Clinical and biochemical follow-up is essential for the early diagnosis and prognosis of DS. The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii causes infectious damage to the fetus during parasite primary-infection. However, in long-term infections, pregnant women develop immune protection to protect the fetus, although they remain susceptible to pathological or inflammatory effects induced by T. gondii. This study aimed to investigat

Ovarian hormones, but not fluoxetine, impart resilience within a chronic unpredictable stress model in middle-aged female rats.

Depression is more prevalent in women than in men, and women are at a heightened risk for depression during the postpartum and perimenopause. There is also evidence to suggest that the ovarian hormone milieu may dictate antidepressant efficacy. Thus, it is important to investigate the role of ovarian hormones in the pathogenesis of depression and in the mechanisms that may underlie antidepressant efficacy. In the present study, we used 10-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats to examine the effects of long-term ovarian hormone deprivation on the development of depressive-like endophenotypes aft

Effects of a midwife psycho-education intervention to reduce childbirth fear on women's birth outcomes and postpartum psychological wellbeing.

BACKGROUND: High levels of childbirth fear impact birth preparation, obstetric outcomes and emotional wellbeing for around one in five women living in developed countries. Higher rates of obstetric intervention and caesarean section (CS) are experienced in fearful women. The efficacy of interventions to reduce childbirth fear is unclear, with no previous randomised controlled trials reporting birth outcomes or postnatal psychological wellbeing following a midwife led intervention. METHOD: Between May 2012 and June 2013 women in their second trimester of pregnancy were recruited. Women with a

Pain in childbirth and postpartum recovery: the role of catastrophizing.

This prospective study investigated how pain catastrophizing was related to labor pain intensity and physical recovery after childbirth. Eighty-eight women giving birth for the first time completed the first questionnaire before delivery. Eighty-two of those returned the second questionnaire after delivery. Participants were classified as catastrophizers (n=38) or non-catastrophizers (n=44) based on their scores on the Pain Catastrophizing Scale. Comparison of the groups showed that catastrophizers anticipated and experienced more intense pain (p<.0125) and had poorer physical recovery (p<.012

Breastfeeding Practices, Insomnia Symptoms, Anxiety, and Depression Among Lebanese Mothers: A Cross-Sectional Study.

The postpartum period is marked by significant physiological and psychological changes, placing mothers at heightened risk for mental health disturbances such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. While breastfeeding is widely recognized for its physical and emotional benefits, its association with maternal mental health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries, particularly Lebanon, remains underexplored. This study aimed to assess the relationship between breastfeeding practices (exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months and breastfeeding continuation at 12 and 24 months) and insomnia, anxiety
