Controlling environmental effects in surface plasticity/fracture of metals is of interest for areas as diverse as manufacturing processes, product performance, and structural safety. The key to controlling these effects is understanding the effect of adsorbates on surface energy (γ) and surface stress (f). While γ has been well studied, the role of surface stress has received much less attention. We characterize surface stress induced in metals by adsorption of organic monolayers. Linear alkanoic acids of varying chain length (3-18) are deposited by molecular self-assembly onto one side of an

We conducted a retrospective multicentre study to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes, and complications of three surgical treatments of distal ulna fracture (DUF) when combined with anterior locking plate fixation for distal radial fracture (DRF) in patients over 70 years of age. We identified 1521 patients over 70 years of age who were diagnosed as having DRF and who underwent anterior locking plate fixation between 2015 and 2020, among which 122 cases of DUF were analysed. Three surgical treatment options for DUF were identified in this cohort: K-wire fixation (Group K), locking

BACKGROUND: Conventionally, the extended lateral approach (ELA) served as the standard extensile approach for intraarticular calcaneal fracture fixation. However, this approach has a high rate of wound complications. The purpose of this study was to describe an alternative approach, the posteriorlateral approach (PLA) and compare it to the ELA regarding soft tissue complications and functional outcome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 32 patients operated through PLA and 66 patients treated through ELA were included in this retrospective study. Major and minor soft tissue complications up to 3 months p

BACKGROUND: In male cattle, rupture of the urinary bladder is usually associated with urethral obstruction by uroliths. Less common causes include urethral compression or stricture. This case report describes the findings in a young Limousion breeding bull with rupture of the urinary bladder because of urethral compression by a haematoma after coccygeal fracture.
CASE PRESENTATION: The bull had been introduced into a 40-head Red-Holstein herd one week before being injured. One week after introduction to the herd, the bull had an acute onset of anorexia and he was referred to the clinic. There

Fractures of the nasofrontal orbital complex account for 5% of all facial fractures. Mean hospitalization is usually longer than for other types of facial lesions, independent of the trauma responsible (road accidents, sport, falls, firearm wounds, and so on). The choice of treatment, usually dictated by the site and extent of the damage, is important because inadequate treatment may lead to immediate or subsequent complications. A conservative surgical technique for use in the treatment of non-comminuted frontal lesions is described, which consists of the closed reduction of the depressed fra

Background Management of complex proximal tibial fractures is challenging due to periarticular comminution and associated soft-tissue compromise. Hybrid external fixation has been proposed as an alternative to internal fixation in such cases. This study aimed to evaluate the functional and radiological outcomes of hybrid external fixation in proximal tibial fractures. Methods This was a prospective observational study conducted at a tertiary care teaching hospital over one year. Thirty adult patients with periarticular or intra-articular proximal tibial fractures were treated using hybrid exte

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the biomechanical performance of novel anterior variable-angle locking plates versus tension band wiring used for fixation of simple and complex patella fractures.
METHODS: Sixteen pairs of human cadaveric knees were used to simulate two-part simple transverse AO/OTA 34-C1 and five-part complex AO/OTA 34-C3 patella fractures. The complex fracture pattern was characterized with a medial and a lateral proximal fragment, together with an inferomedial, an inferolateral and an inferior fragment mimicking comminution around the distal patella pol

BACKGROUND: Currently, antegrade intramedullary nailing and minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) represent the main surgical alternatives in distal tibial fractures. However, neither choice is optimal for all bony and soft tissue injuries. The Retrograde Tibial Nail (RTN) is a small-caliber prototype implant, which is introduced through a 2-cm-long incision at the tip of the medial malleolus with stab incisions sufficient for interlocking. During this project, we investigated the feasibility of retrograde tibial nailing in a cadaver model and conducted biomechanical testing.

Objective This study aimed to evaluate the functional and radiological outcomes associated with the operative management of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures using pre-contoured locking compression plates (LCPs), specifically in cases that met surgical indications such as fracture displacement, shortening, or comminution. Methodology In this prospective study, 30 adult patients with displaced midshaft or lateral clavicular fractures underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with pre-contoured LCPs at a tertiary care center. Patients were followed clinically for six months pos

PURPOSE: Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the humeral head is a relatively frequent complication after proximal humerus fractures (PHF), often leading to poor outcomes and reoperation. This study investigates both non-modifiable (fracture type, trauma energy, age, sex, Charlson comorbidity index) and modifiable (surgical access, bone graft use, reduction quality) risk factors for post-operative AVN in Neer 3-4-part PHFs.
METHODS: Patients with Neer 3-4-part PHFs treated using angular stable plates and followed for at least 6 months were included. Clinical and radiographic elements were evaluated.

INTRODUCTION: There is a great debate on the routine use of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for midshaft clavicle fractures, and one concern is the adverse events after ORIF, such as implant removal after bone union. In this retrospective study, we assessed the incidence, risk factors, management and outcomes of refracture after plate removal of midshaft clavicle fractures after bone union.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred fifty-two patients diagnosed with acute midshaft clavicle fractures who had complete medical records from primary fractures to refracture were recruited. De

BACKGROUND: Surgical fixation of tibial plateau fracture in elderly patients with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) provides inferior outcomes compared with younger patients. Primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may be of benefit in elderly patients with a combination of osteoporotic bone and metaphyseal comminution. However, there continues to be conflicting evidence on the use of TKA for primary treatment of tibial plateau fracture. This systematic review was performed to quantify the outcomes and perioperative complication rates of TKA for primary treatment of tibial plateau frac

BACKGROUND: Historically, in the pediatric population, there is a highly selective approach for repeat imaging given the risk of radiation and costs. In the lieu of this, frequent neurological checks and even ICP monitoring has been used as an adjunct, although not always successful. We present a case of a pediatric patient with a late evolving epidural hematoma in the setting of a depressed skull fracture, and present an argument for serial CT imaging in a select patient population similar to his.
OBJECTIVE: Discuss the unique presentation, diagnosis, and management of an expanding epidural

Background: Unstable intra-articular proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint fracture-dislocations present a difficult problem that requires congruous joint reduction and stable internal fixation or distraction. Though fractures with limited articular involvement may be treated successfully with less invasive procedures, fracture-dislocations with a volar shear component may benefit from joint reduction with subchondral support for maintenance of stability. The purpose of this article is to describe a volar transverse plate and screw technique and report the short-term postoperative results. Meth

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were first to compare the results of osteosynthesis with standard Metaizeau (MS) nails versus Metaizeau Junior Flex or MJF Orthofix (MJF) in terms of the stability of long-bone fractures in children, and to study the preoperative and postoperative safety of these new nails. We also carried out an analysis by computer modeling of a femur, in order to compare the biomechanical stability of the 2 nails. The interest in the MJF nails lies in the improvements they bring in terms of stability for long-bone fractures in pediatric patients, as well as the simpl
