BACKGROUND: Like other health care workers, dental professionals are at risk of developing allergic contact dermatitis, or ACD, after exposure to allergenic chemicals. Common allergens include antimicrobials, preservatives, rubber additives and methacrylates.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors describe an orthodontic assistant with severe skin disease, whose symptoms included redness, cracking and bleeding that persisted for 10 years. The patient had previously received an incomplete diagnosis. After performing patch testing, assessing symptoms and evaluating the patient's medical history, the aut

It is to be feared that the expansion of interventional radiology could lead to the reappearance of chronic radiodermatitis. Only a few studies mention the doses received by the hands, however these radiation doses are always high. Whereas clinical examinations lead to a belated diagnosis, capillary microscopy, a quick and non invasive test, enables to detect vascular injuries at the subclinical stage. Radiological protection is currently based on leaded gloves and on the reduction of exposure duration. Compensation for chronic radiodermatitis depends on the practitioner's status. In spite of

We report a case of a 57-years-old female farmer with occupational airborne dermatitis and hand dermatitis to hop (Humulus lupulus). The disease appeared at the age of 46, after 30 years of working with hop without any health problems. The patient had skin erythema of the face, neck and décolleté , oedema of the eyelids, conjunctivitis, as well as acute dermatitis of the hands. The symptoms were provoked both by fresh and dried hop, appeared after half-an-hour of working and persisted over 1-2 days. There were no other skin or allergic problems. Skin tests were carried out with hop leaves (sal

Plaster of Paris (POP) bandages are extensively used for splinting and casting injured or surgically repaired body parts. Allergic contact dermatitis caused by POP has been reported only rarely in the medical literature. An 81-year-old woman developed multiple large, tense, haemorrhagic bullae on the palm, and an acute vesicular eczematous eruption on the forearm, after the application of a POP splint. Subsequent patch testing revealed positive reactions to both the POP bandage used and to benzalkonium chloride, a component of the POP formulation. Patch tests to two other POP products without

OBJECTIVE: Occupational skin changes in hairdressers are very common. Morbidity, however, has not yet been quantified precisely.
METHODS: A cohort of 2,352 hairdressing apprentices (of the 2,570 invited to participate, i.e., 91.5% response) was prospectively followed for the duration of their vocational training (3 years) by three examinations. Three waves (years) were recruited in 1992, 1993, and 1994 from 15 vocational training schools in northwestern Germany.
RESULTS: The point prevalence of (mostly slight) irritant skin changes of the hands increased from 35.4% in the initial examination

Health care personnel form the 5th category at major occupational risk of skin disease in Italy. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and clinical relevance of contact dermatitis in a group of 1301 employees of the Perugia Monteluce Hospital (658 females and 643 males; mean age 39.8 years) who answered a self-administered questionnaire elaborated by the authors. The subjects with anamnestic hand dermatitis and/or atopic mucosal reactions were clinically examined and submitted to skin tests (patch and/or prick tests). Contact dermatitis of the hands and/or forearms occurred in 21.

An outbreak of staphylococcal food poisoning among 364 charter-flight passengers and crew members is described. Symptoms appeared just before landing, about an hour after a meal containing contaminated ham had been served. 143 passengers were admitted to hospital. 1 patient developed acute anuria and 1 had hemiplegia and aphasia; both recovered. Fever and bloody stools were recorded with unusual frequency.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Hand Eczema (CHE) is a multifactorial, fluctuating inflammatory disease of the hands and wrists that negatively impacts patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL).
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of delgocitinib cream versus cream vehicle on HRQoL.
METHODS: DELTA 1 and DELTA 2 were phase 3 trials of identical design in which adults with moderate to severe CHE were randomised (2:1) to double-blind treatment with delgocitinib cream 20 mg/g or cream vehicle twice daily for 16 weeks. Data were pooled from both trials and changes in EQ-5D, Dermatology Life Quality Inde

BACKGROUND: Work-related hand eczema (WRHE) is a prevalent skin condition associated with reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL), sleep disturbances or depression. While prior studies primarily explored emotional effects as part of HRQoL, emotions have been less studied separately.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the 'Atopic Eczema Score of Emotional Consequences' (AESEC) in patients with WRHE and to investigate the emotional impact of WRHE.
METHODS: Self-reported sociodemographic data as well as self-reported and clinically assessed disease severity of 223 pat

BACKGROUND: Chromium (Cr) may cause contact allergy with leather being the most important exposure. To reduce contact allergy to Cr, the European Union (EU) implemented a regulation in 2015 limiting the maximum amount of hexavalent Cr in leather that comes into contact with the skin to 3 mg/kg.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate prevalences, trends, and clinical and demographic characteristics of patients with contact allergy to Cr following the EU regulation.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Patients aged ≥ 18 years, who were consecutively patch tested with potassium dichromate 0.5%

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers have a high risk of developing hand eczema.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and severity of dermatologist-determined hand eczema among healthcare workers, carry out patch testing, and correlate the findings with impairment in quality of life (QoL) and demographic and vocational factors.
METHODS: Seven hundred and ten healthcare workers (279 nurses, 246 cleaners, and 185 nursing auxiliaries) were screened for the presence of hand eczema. Severity of eczema was calculated with the Hand Eczema Severity Index (HECSI), and QoL was measured with the Dermatolo

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with methyl aminolaevulinate (MAL) is highly effective for treating actinic keratosis (AK) on the face/scalp, but less effective on the extremities. Insufficient accumulation of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) may cause these inferior efficacy rates. However, it is possible to increase PpIX accumulation by extending the MAL application time and/or pretreating the skin with curettage.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether increased PpIX accumulation improves the effect of MAL-PDT for AKs in a randomized intra-individual study.
METHODS: Twenty-two patients with 533

This article provides an overview of clinical aspects of hand eczema in patients with atopic dermatitis. Hand eczema can be a part of atopic dermatitis itself or a comorbidity, for example, as irritant or allergic contact dermatitis. When managing hand eczema, it is important to first categorize the subtype and identify potential culprit allergens or irritants. First-line therapy should be a combination of emollients and topical corticosteroids; possible alternatives include topical calcineurin inhibitors or coal tar. Second-line therapy includes UV therapy and systemic therapy, including azat

BACKGROUND: Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A resin (DGEBA-R) is the most common sensitizer in epoxy systems, but a minority of patients also develop contact allergy to reactive diluents.
OBJECTIVES: To analyse the frequency and clinical relevance of allergic reactions to different epoxy reactive diluents and related aliphatic epoxy resins.
METHODS: Test files (January 1991 to June 2014) were screened, and the clinical records of patients with allergic reactions were analysed for occupation, concomitant allergic reactions, and exposure.
RESULTS: A total of 67 patients reacted to at least one

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aim of this study was to understand why an infectious skin disease due to colonisation by Staphylococcus aureus methi-S led to disembarkation of a fisherman for treatment and follow-up.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: While discussing this case we have analysed different reasons why the studied fisherman could not be successfully treated on board.
RESULTS: A 42-year-old fisherman was first presented with skin lesions while fishing for hake. When the fisherman had developed a fever and exfoliative skin lesions on both hands, the ship's captain called the radio-medical centre fo
