Cellular and humoral local immune responses in sheep experimentally infected with Oestrus ovis (Diptera: Oestridae).

Cellular and humoral local responses were investigated following repetitive artificial Oestrus ovis infections in lambs. The presence of larvae induced a huge local recruitment of either leucocytes (T and B lymphocytes, macrophages) or granulocytes (eosinophils, mast cells and globule leucocytes). This cellular response was more pronounced in the ethmoid and sinus (development sites of second and third instar larvae) than in the septum or turbinates where first instar larvae migrate. Infected lambs produced Oestrus ovis specific IgG and IgA antibodies in their mucus. This local humoral respons

Towards a lower prevalence of Oestrus ovis infections in sheep in a temperate climate (south west France).

Oestrus ovis larvae are obligatory parasites of the nasal and sinus cavities of sheep and goats. In the temperate climate of western Europe, fly attacks occur between May and October and the first stage larvae arrest their development within the host between October and February. Oestrosis clinical signs such as nasal discharge and sneezing are well known by sheep breeders in southwest France. According to veterinarian recommendations, most of them treat their animals with long lasting fasciolicides once a year at least, mainly during the fly activity period and at the beginning of the hypobio

Foreign bodies in the nasal cavities: a comprehensive review of the aetiology, diagnostic pointers, and therapeutic measures.

Otolaryngologists frequently encounter nasal foreign bodies, particularly among children and mentally retarded patients. There are isolated reports describing the removal of unusual foreign bodies from the nose. But no comprehensive reviews of this important subject have been published for many years. This article includes a detailed discussion of the different types of nasal foreign bodies, the various clinical presentations, management options, and complications associated with nasal foreign bodies.

The prevalence and abundance of internal parasites in working horses autopsied in Poland.

The digestive tracts of 50 working horses from private farms in Poland were examined. Thirty-seven nematode species, two tapeworm species and one species of botfly were recovered. The most prevalent small strongyle species were Cyathostomum catinatum, Cylicocyclus nassatus, Cylicostephanus goldi, Cylicostephanus longibursatus, Cyathostomum coronatum, Cylicostephanus calicatus, Cylicocyclus leptostomus and Cylicostephanus minutus. Thirteen cyathostome species showed a site preference in the ventral colon, five in the dorsal colon and three in the caecum. One species, Cylicocyclus triramosus, wa

Behavioral, Physiological, Demographic and Ecological Impacts of Hematophagous and Endoparasitic Insects on an Arctic Ungulate.

Animals that deliver a toxic secretion through a wound or to the body surface without a wound are considered venomous and toxungenous, respectively. Hematophagous insects, such as mosquitoes (Aedes spp.), meet the criteria for venomous, and some endoparasitic insects, such as warble flies (Hypoderma tarandi), satisfy the definition for toxungenous. The impacts of these insects on their hosts are wide ranging. In the Arctic, their primary host is the most abundant ungulate, the caribou (Rangifer tarandus). The most conspicuous impacts of these insects on caribou are behavioral. Caribou increase

The global and regional prevalence of oestrosis in sheep and goats: a systematic review of articles and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Oestrosis, caused by the larvae of Oestrus ovis, commonly known as sheep nose bot, is an obligatory cavitary myiasis of sheep and goats. Oestrus ovis is a widespread parasite, but little is known about the prevalence of oestrosis at the global and broad geographical levels. The present study aimed to explore the epidemiology of oestrosis at the global and regional level to estimate prevalences and their associated factors using a systematic approach. This is, to the author's knowledge, the first meta-analysis of oestrosis in sheep and goats. METHODS: Published articles were obtain…

Control of the sheep blowfly in Australia and New Zealand--are we there yet?

The last 50 years of research into infections in Australia and New Zealand caused by larvae of the sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina, have significantly advanced our understanding of this blowfly and its primary host, the sheep. However, apart from some highly effective drugs it could be argued that no new control methodologies have resulted. This review addresses the major areas of sheep blowfly research over this period describing the significant outcomes and analyses, and what is still required to produce new commercial control technologies. The use of drugs against this fly species has been v

[Arthropods as a cause of leisure sickness: ectoparasites].

Ectoparasites are a type of arthropod parasites that live on the body surface of their host. Many ectoparasitic infestations are associated with travel and leisure. Recognition of the specific symptoms of ectoparasitic infestations is important because of the hygienic and therapeutic consequences.

Effect on the breech and tail characteristics of Merino lambs of varying the duration of application of occlusive plastic clips as an alternative to mulesing.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine the minimum duration of clip application required to increase the size of the perineal and tail bare areas and reduce breech wrinkle, dag or urine stain scores of Merino lambs. METHOD: The study was conducted on a single farm in western New South Wales using 491 unmulesed lambs of a plain body type (9-14 weeks of age; mean (±SD) bodyweight 26.9 ± 5.0 kg; 82% wrinkle score 1 or 2) randomly allocated into 10 groups. Groups 1-9 included 39-46 lambs treated with the clips, which were removed at 1-7, 10 or 14 days, respectively, after applicat

Comparison of infection rates of Oestrus ovis between sheep and goats kept in mixed flocks.

Oestrosis is a nasal myiasis of sheep and goats caused by larvae of the fly Oestrus ovis and can lead to severe clinical signs, which together with the disturbance caused by the adult fly may result into serious economic losses. Infection rates and larval burdens are always higher in sheep than in goats after either natural or artificial infestation. The aim of this study was to compare the host preference of the adult fly O. ovis between sheep and goats in mixed flocks, where they are kept together under the same husbandry conditions and hence, are very similarly exposed to the fly preference…

Wohlfahrtiosis in sheep and the role of dicyclanil in its prevention.

Wohlfahrtia magnifica is the main agent of traumatic myiasis in the southern Palaearctic zone. It was recorded in outbreak situations in Crete, Greece, for the first time in 1999, causing widespread production losses and considerable concern in the livestock sectors. Most commonly applied curative insecticides, organophosphates and pyrethroids, can kill larvae of W. magnifica, but they do not provide long-term protection from infestation or re-infestation, which would facilitate wound healing. The objective of the present work was to study the seasonal dynamics of sheep wohlfahrtiosis in Crete…

Internal ophthalmomyiasis presenting as endophthalmitis associated with an intraocular foreign body.

Ophthalmomyiasis interna infestation by fly larva can present in various forms. A 3-year-old girl with a 15-day history of pain, redness, and tearing of the right eye was referred to our clinic with the diagnosis of endophthalmitis associated with an intraocular foreign body, based on clinical and ultrasonographic findings. The patient underwent pars plana vitrectomy, during which an 8-mm long larva was encountered within the vitreous cavity. It was removed and identified as a cattle botfly. The patient developed a retinal detachment 1 month postoperatively, but the family refused further trea…
