Robust semi-automatic vessel tracing in the human retinal image by an instance segmentation neural network.

Vasculature morphology and hierarchy are essential for blood perfusion. Human retinal circulation is an intricate vascular system emerging and remerging at the optic nerve head (ONH). Tracing retinal vascular branching from ONH can allow detailed morphological quantification, and yet remains a challenging task. We presented a robust semi-automatic vessel tracing algorithm on human fundus images by an instance segmentation neural network (InSegNN). InSegNN separates and labels individual vascular trees and enables tracing each tree throughout its branching. We have three strategies to improve r

Simultaneous variable selection and estimation for a partially linear Cox model.

We consider simultaneous variable selection and estimation for a deep neural network-based partially linear Cox model and propose a novel penalized approach. In particular, a two-step iterative algorithm is developed with the use of the minimum information criterion to ensure sparse estimation. The proposed method circumvents the curse of dimensionality while facilitating the interpretability of linear covariate effects on survival, and the algorithm greatly reduces the computational burden by avoiding the need to select the optimal tuning parameters that is usually required by many other popu

Towards realistic simulation of disease progression in the visual cortex with CNNs.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and mammalian visual systems share architectural and information processing similarities. We leverage these parallels to develop an in-silico CNN model simulating diseases affecting the visual system. This model aims to replicate neural complexities in an experimentally controlled environment. Therefore, we examine object recognition and internal representations of a CNN under neurodegeneration and neuroplasticity conditions simulated through synaptic weight decay and retraining. This approach can model neurodegeneration from events like tau accumulation, r

Multi-strategy dung beetle optimization for robust indoor object detection and tracking for visually impaired people with hybrid deep learning networks.

Visually impaired people generally face many troubles in their everyday lives, and technical involvement might help them perform these tasks. Object detection is a significant aspect of computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML), which plays a substantial part in recognizing and detecting objects in a video or image. Dissimilar objects are detected, and their shape, size, and position data are accurately acquired through object detection. Particularly, visually challenged people are not set to face sudden situations by themselves while moving. Hence, these situations are a significant atta

Automated radiographic assessment of lower limb alignment using deep learning in a data-constrained clinical setting.

BACKGROUND: A model using stacked hourglass neural network modules was developed for automated lower limb alignment measurements in full-leg frontal radiographs. The goal was to assess whether high accuracy could be achieved with training on relatively small datasets, a common constraint in clinical research. METHODS: The model first identifies joints regions of interest (ROIs), then detects anatomical landmarks for alignment measurement within each ROI. 112 bilateral radiographs (216 annotated single-leg images) were used for training and validation, 99 (186 legs) as internal test set, and 25

Detection and tracking of a gauze sponge in minimally invasive surgery using a YOLO and R-CNN based model.

Gauze sponges are the items most commonly retained from surgery. The additional time required to find the missing gauze sponge increases anesthetic risk and causes a delay for the next surgery. In minimally invasive surgery, a digital camera can record any object on the screen during surgical procedure. This study aimed to compare modern object detection methods and propose a gauze tracking model to detect and trace the location of gauze sponges in surgical videos. The model consisted of a detection module and a regulating module. The methods used in the detection module included the YOLO seri

Evaluation of an artificial intelligence system for bull sperm morphology evaluation.

The morphological characteristics of bull spermatozoa are usually evaluated visually using bright-field microscopy according to the guidelines proposed by the Society for Theriogenology (SFT) for the Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation (BBSE). However, analysis is labor consuming and requires experienced personnel to obtain reliable results. Nevertheless, the artificial insemination industry increasingly demands the implementation of genomic selection schemes for young bulls. Hence, there is a growing need for a more standardized technique to analyze semen quality, particularly for the evaluati

CDAFormer: Hybrid Transformer-based contrastive domain adaptation framework for unsupervised hyperspectral change detection.

Hyperspectral image (HSI) change detection is a technique used to identify changes between HSIs captured in the same scene at different times. Most of the existing deep learning-based methods can achieve wonderful results, but it is difficult to generalize well to other HSIs with different data distributions. Moreover, it is expensive and laborious to obtain the annotated dataset for model training. To address above issues, we propose a hybrid Transformer-based contrastive domain adaptation (CDAFormer) framework for unsupervised hyperspectral change detection, which can effectively use prior i

MuST-GCN: Multiscale and Hybrid Spatial Temporal Graph Convolutional Network for Accurate Identification of Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Dependence Within Alcohol Use Disorder.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), encompassing Alcohol Abuse (AA) and Alcohol Dependence (AD), is a chronic, relapsing brain condition that can cause mental and physical issues. Confusion between AA and AD can lead to ineffective or even excessively aggressive treatments, but distinguishing them is difficult due to similar symptoms and physiological indicators. Fortunately, from a psychological perspective, AA is closely linked to poor behavioral control, while AD is associated with affective lability. These psychological mechanisms are differently featured in the activity of patients' brain regions

DistRMI: a deep distance-aware neural network for explainable RNA loop motif-small molecule interaction prediction.

RNA participates in the occurrence and development of various diseases by regulating gene expression. Owing to its potential to circumvent the limitations of traditional "undruggable" protein targets, it is regarded as a core direction for next-generation precision therapy. Against this backdrop, the accurate and interpretable prediction of RNA-small molecule interactions has become a key link in accelerating the discovery of RNA-targeted drugs. However, existing methods suffer from insufficient prediction accuracy and interpretability, failing to effectively guide lead compound screening or e

A multi-task self-supervised approach for mass detection in automated breast ultrasound using double attention recurrent residual U-Net.

Breast cancer is the most common and lethal cancer among women worldwide. Early detection using medical imaging technologies can significantly improve treatment outcomes. Automated breast ultrasound, known as ABUS, offers more advantages compared to traditional mammography and has recently gained considerable attention. However, reviewing hundreds of ABUS slices imposes a high workload on radiologists, increasing review time and potentially leading to diagnostic errors. Consequently, there is a strong need for efficient computer-aided detection, CADe, systems. In recent years, researchers have

Deep Learning Neural Network Based on PSO for Leukemia Cell Disease Diagnosis from Microscope Images.

Leukemia is a kind of cancer characterized by the proliferation of abnormal, immature White Blood Cells (WBCs) produced in the bone marrow, which subsequently circulate throughout the body. Prompt leukemia diagnosis is vital in determining the optimal treatment plan, as different types of leukemia require distinct treatments. Early detection is therefore instrumental in facilitating the use of the most effective therapies. The identification of leukemia cells from microscopic images is considered a challenging task due to the complexity of the image features. This paper presents a deep learnin

Hybrid Symmetry Mamba Network for Ultrasound-Based CAD of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is the most common congenital joint disease in infant. The B-mode ultrasound (BUS) based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) can help sonologists improve diagnostic accuracy for DDH. The routine CAD models mainly developed based on convolutional neural network or Transformer, which cannot fully learn the inherent structural and texture properties in the hip BUS images. The newly proposed Mamba model has shown its superior performance for learning feature representation with linear computation complexity. However, the scanning mechanism still effect the perfo

Transfer learning with fuzzy decision support for multi-class lung disease classification: performance analysis of pre-trained CNN models.

Accurate and efficient classification of lung diseases from medical images remains a significant challenge in computer-aided diagnosis systems. This research presents a novel approach integrating transfer learning techniques with fuzzy decision support systems for multi-class lung disease classification. We compare the performance of three pre-trained CNN architectures-VGG16, VGG19, and ResNet50-enhanced with a fuzzy logic decision layer. The proposed methodology employs transfer learning to leverage knowledge from large-scale datasets while adapting to the specific characteristics of lung dis
