RESPONSE OF THE INFANT KIDNEY TO DIURETIC DRUGS.

The diuretic response of normal infants, 6 to 47 days of age, to single doses of mercaptomerin, chlorothiazide, acetazolamide, triamterene and spironolactone was studied by following urinary electrolytes, pH and osmolality. Peak diuresis occured two to four hours after drug administration, and because of compensatory mechanisms little change in urinary excretion was found if only 24-hour urines were studied. Mercaptomerin increased sodium excretion seven-fold, compared to three- to four-fold increases for the other diuretics. Control urinary Na:K ratios averaged 0.68 in infants compared to 2.8

Salt/alkali‑tolerant Streptomyces luteus TRM 45540 improves pepper growth and soil quality in acidic and alkaline soils.

This study evaluated the potential of the salt-alkali-tolerant actinobacterium Streptomyces luteus TRM 45540, isolated from Lop Nur saline-alkali soil in Xinjiang, to alleviate pH-related iron deficiency and promote pepper growth. We hypothesized that this strain could mobilize and compete for soil iron via siderophore production, thereby benefiting plants under variable-pH conditions. To test this hypothesis, we compared its effects with conventional iron fertilizers (EDDHA-Fe₆, ferrous sulfate) and compound microbial fertilizer on pepper growth, soil physicochemical properties, and rhizosphe

Effects of combinatorial hurdles on a non-alcoholic beer matrix challenged with Salmonella Javiana, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus cereus.

Growing consumer interest in reducing alcohol consumption is prompting beverage producers to develop non-alcoholic versions of traditional products; however, the removal of ethanol also removes an important food safety hurdle. This study evaluated whether the remaining intrinsic hurdles of pH (5.0 or 4.2), carbonation (0, 0.75, or 1.5 volumes CO₂), and antimicrobial compounds (none, 10 ppm iso-α-acids, or 100 ppm potassium sorbate) were sufficient to control foodborne pathogens in a non-alcoholic beer matrix. A factorial combination of these variables produced 18 treatments, with 2 additional

Leaf elemental composition of Cleome gynandra L. as influenced by giant kelp extract and kraal manure application.

Cleome gynandra L. (spider plant) is a traditional leafy vegetable that contains minerals, vitamins, proteins, and phytochemical compounds. However, little is known about the effects of sole KM (kraal manure), GKE (giant kelp extract), and GKE + KM on spider plant leaf mineral composition. This study aimed to determine the effect of sole GKE, KM, and GKE + KM on leaf mineral composition. It is hypothesized that 1 mL/L GKE supplemented with 30 kg/345 m2 KM will influence leaf nutrient composition. This hypothesis was tested using a split-plot design across two growing seasons at the University

Soil microbial community succession and physicochemical property changes affect Ganoderma leucocontextum growth in the Dadu river basin.

Ganoderma leucocontextum is rich in bioactive compounds, including triterpenes and polysaccharides, and exhibits significant pharmacological effects. Its cultivation requires casing soil, crucial for achieving high productivity and superior quality. In this study, soil physicochemical properties and microbial communities were analyzed across four growth stages: casing (GCK), primordial (G1p), cap (G1c), and maturity (G1m) of G. leucocontextum. Results indicated that the soil pH significantly increased after cultivation, ranging from 6.78 to 7.11. The control soil contained the highest concentr

Packing Density Governs Tobacco Quality Through Microbial Community Assembly and Metabolic Reprogramming.

Packing density regulates the microenvironment of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) fermentation and may thereby influence microbial activity and product quality. However, its effects on microbial community assembly and quality formation remain poorly understood. This study aimed to clarify how packing density affects flue-cured tobacco quality by shaping microbial communities, functional potential, and ecological interactions. Here, we investigated the effects of three packing densities (60%, 70%, and 80%) on chemical components, aroma compounds, microbial community structure, functional potenti

Geochemical background of oligotrophic peatlands in the northern taiga (European Northeast): Assessing the contribution of endogenous processes and wildfires to potentially toxic elements accumulation.

The present study is devoted to the vertical distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the peat profiles of the northern taiga, which depend on endogenous processes, external inputs, geochemical barriers, and are also influenced by fires. Based on the obtained results, elements were distributed within the soil profile into two distinct groups. The first group predominantly concentrates in the lower horizons and includes zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), vanadium (V), titanium (Ti), and magnesium (Mg). The second group is primarily found i

Removal of polyvinylidene fluoride binder and other organics for enhancing the leaching efficiency of lithium and cobalt from black mass.

The agglomeration and encapsulation of recoverable materials of interest (e.g. metals and graphite) as a result of the presence of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) in spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with mixed chemistries (black mass) lower the extraction efficiency of metals. In this study, organic solvents and alkaline solutions were used as non-toxic reagents to investigate the removal of a PVDF binder from a black mass. The results demonstrated that 33.1%, 31.4%, and 31.4% of the PVDF were removed using dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylacetamide (DMAc), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at 15

Modulation of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase functions by the cloud of endogenous metabolites in a local microenvironment: The glycyrrhetinic acid-like factor (GALF) hypothesis.

11β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11β-HSD)-dependent conversion of cortisol to cortisone and corticosterone to 11-dehydrocorticosterone are essential in regulating transcriptional activities of mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) and glucocorticoid receptors (GR). Inhibition of 11β-HSD by glycyrrhetinic acid metabolites, bioactive components of licorice, causes sodium retention and potassium loss, with hypertension characterized by low renin and aldosterone. Essential hypertension is a major disease, mostly with unknown underlying mechanisms. Here, we discuss a putative mechanism for essential hy
