HIV Infection: What Is New in Prevention and Treatment?

HIV remains a significant public health challenge despite highly effective prevention and treatment strategies. Screening for HIV infection is recommended for individuals ages 15 to 65 years. The status neutral approach to care includes preexposure prophylaxis for HIV-negative patients and antiretroviral therapy for patients with HIV. The preexposure prophylaxis options approved by the US Food and Drug Administration include oral and injectable formulations, which reduce HIV acquisition risk by 99% when taken consistently. Same-day antiretroviral therapy initiation is the standard of care for

The healthcare experiences of LGBTQ people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the United States: A scoping review.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) each face multiple systems of oppression (e.g., cissexism, ableism) that produce interpersonal, institutional, and environmental barriers to accessing healthcare services. For people with intersecting LGBTQ and IDD identities, these barriers coalesce to further restrict access to healthcare, worsening quality of health and health disparities. This scoping review explores the experiences of LGBTQ people with IDD and the barriers and facilitators they encounter when acc

The Role of Supportive and Unsupportive Family Behaviors in the Mental Health of Transgender and Nonbinary Young Adults.

PURPOSE: Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people are at an elevated risk for depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and family behaviors may contribute to or protect from these negative outcomes. The current study, therefore, aimed to assess whether (1) supportive and unsupportive family behaviors would predict depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms in TNB young adults and (2) the total number of supportive family behaviors would moderate the relationship between the number of unsupportive family behaviors and mental health. METHODS: Participants were n = 200 TNB young

Approach to Interpreting Common Laboratory Pathology Tests in Transgender Individuals.

CONTEXT: As the number of transgender (trans) people (including those who are binary and/or nonbinary identified) seeking gender-affirming hormone therapy rises, endocrinologists are increasingly asked to assist with interpretation of laboratory tests. Many common laboratory tests such as hemoglobin, iron studies, cardiac troponin, and creatinine are affected by sex steroids or body size. We seek to provide a summary of the impact of feminizing and masculinizing hormone therapy on common laboratory tests and an approach to interpretation. CASES: Case scenarios discussed include 1) hemoglobin

Examining violence among Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity state hospital inpatients across multiple time points: the roles of criminogenic risk factors and psychiatric symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Institutional violence in state hospitals is a public health problem that has been severely understudied. Given the personal (ie, staff and patients) and fiscal harms associated with institutional violence, more research into contributing factors for violence is needed. The overarching aim of this study then was to examine associations among psychiatric symptoms, criminal risk factors, and institutional violence. METHODS: Participants were 200 male, female, and transgender forensic mental health inpatients adjudicated Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity and committed to the California

GENDER-Q Youth Patient-Reported Outcome Measure: Protocol for an International Cross-Sectional Field Test Study.

BACKGROUND: The need for gender-affirming care (GAC) for young people has increased rapidly worldwide. GAC includes social, psychological, and medical interventions aimed at alleviating gender-related distress. Given that many outcomes of GAC relate to how young people function and feel, a rigorously developed patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) is needed. To address this need, GENDER-Q Youth was developed with extensive input from youth with lived experience. Concept elicitation interviews were performed with 47 youth from Canada and the United States. A conceptual framework and draft PRO

Barriers and Facilitators Influencing PrEP Uptake Among Men Who Have Sex with Men and Transgender Women in the United States: A Systematic Review.

In the United States, men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) have high HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness, yet uptake rates remain extremely low. This signifies the presence of certain barriers not yet addressed in policy and practice and facilitators not yet utilized in designing effective interventions. This systematic review used the Gelberg and Andersen Model of Vulnerable Populations as a theoretical framework to explore barriers and facilitators to PrEP uptake among MSM and TGW in the US. We searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science in May 2025 t

Clinician Perspectives on Integrating Biomedical HIV Prevention with Gender-Affirming Care Delivered via Telehealth.

Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) continue to be underutilized among transgender people despite elevated HIV incidence in this population. Many transgender individuals report that their gender-affirming care (GAC) is their highest health care priority, and an increasing number seek this care via telehealth. We sought to understand clinician perspectives and needs regarding integrating HIV PrEP and HIV PEP into GAC in a telehealth model. We conducted semi-structured interviews with clinicians who self-identified as providing gender-affirming care via telehealth.

Peer-led community HIV/syphilis testing with linkage within seven days for MSM and transgender women in Indonesia: a mixed-methods process evaluation.

We evaluated a peer-led, community-based service (CBS) model providing integrated HIV/syphilis testing and referral for men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Trained community health workers (CHWs) delivered finger-prick HIV RDTs and, where available, dual HIV/syphilis tests through three outreach modalities: door-to-door outreach, "static community posts", and mobile hotspot events. Primary outcomes were acceptability, feasibility , first-time testing, syphilis testing coverage, and linkage to confirmatory testing and ART within ≤7 days. Amo

Aging Concerns Related to Sexuality and Gender: HIV Prevention and Healthy Aging.

Healthy aging is an important area of research across many populations, but less work has focused on this area among sexual and gender diverse individuals relative to the general population. On the whole, it is known that as the U.S. population ages, increasing attention is needed to understand the intersections between aging, health, and wellbeing. One area of consideration to address in regard to healthy aging is that of HIV prevention, in particular, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use. For the current study we assessed these factors in a cross-sectional survey designed to assess disease st

Barriers and Facilitators to PrEP Adherence among Transgender and Non-binary Individuals: A Mixed-Methods Analysis of Psychosocial Factors and Health Belief Model Constructs.

Despite known benefits of Motivational Interviewing (MI) for medication adherence, its effectiveness in supporting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence among transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) populations remains underexplored. This study applies mixed-methods analysis to understand PrEP adherence among TGNB individuals who received a daily individualized text-message intervention and phone-based MI for non-adherence to PrEP. Individuals who did not respond to three consecutive messages were identified as potential MI recipients. We had three objectives: (1) examine psychosocial differences

Social determinants of health are associated with low uptake of daily HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis and future uptake of long-acting formats: a survey of Black and Latina/x/e transfeminine adults in Chicago.

INTRODUCTION: The transgender population in the United States continues to experience disproportionately high HIV prevalence, and Black and Latina transgender women, in particular, account for more than half of the population's new diagnoses. Uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), the daily oral HIV prevention pill, among Black and Latina transfeminine adults has lagged. This community-engaged, HIV status-neutral study served as an initial investigation of Black and Latina/x/e transfeminine adults' attitudes toward various long-acting formats of PrEP relative to the daily pill. METHODS: A
