Biperiden Selectively Impairs Verbal Episodic Memory in a Dose- and Time-Dependent Manner in Healthy Subjects.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Biperiden is a muscarinic antagonist that produces memory impairments without impairing attention or motor functions in … fter a single dose of biperiden 2 or 4 mg, or placebo. Episodic memory was measured using a 15-word verbal learning task (VLT). Furthermore, n-back tasks, a sustained attention to response task and a reaction time task were used, as well as subjective alertness and a side effects questionnaire. In addition, blood serum values and physiological measures were taken …

Parahippocampectomy as a New Surgical Approach to Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Caused By Hippocampal Sclerosis: A Pilot Randomized Comparative Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The parahippocampal gyrus plays an important role in the epileptogenic pathways of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy caused by hippocampal sclerosis (mTLE-HS); its resection could prevent epileptic seizures with fewer complications. This study evaluates the initial efficacy and safety of anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL), selective amygdalohipppocampectomy (SAH), and parahippocampectomy (PHC) surgical approaches in mTLE-HS. METHODS: A randomized comparative pilot clinical trial (2008-2011) was performed that included patients with mTLE-HS who underwent ATL, trans-T3 SAH,

Serum testosterone levels are related to cognitive function in men with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Sex steroids such as oestrogen and testosterone are potent neurodevelopmental hormones that also play a role in neuromodulation and neuroprotection of the mature brain. Sex steroid hormones may also be involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia as reduced circulating sex steroid levels and changes in brain sex steroid receptors are found in people with schizophrenia compared to controls. In men with schizophrenia, recent studies have documented an inverse correlation between serum testosterone and negative symptoms. Our study sought to confirm whether men with schizophrenia h

Processing speed and working memory performance in those with both ADHD and a reading disorder compared with those with ADHD alone.

In previous studies, children with both Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a Reading Disorder were found to have more difficulties with processing speed, working memory, and timed as opposed to non-timed executive functioning (EF) measures when compared with those with either disorder alone. The current study found that older adolescents and adults with both disorders also had more difficulties on processing speed and working memory measures than individuals who only had ADHD. There were no differences among non-timed EF scores. These results add support to the premise that co

Association of maternal genital and reproductive infections with verbal memory and motor deficits in adult schizophrenia.

Maternal exposure to genital and reproductive infections has been associated with schizophrenia in previous studies. Impairments in several neuropsychological functions, including verbal memory, working memory, executive function, and fine-motor coordination occur prominently in patients with schizophrenia. The etiologies of these deficits, however, remain largely unknown. We aimed to assess whether prospectively documented maternal exposure to genital/reproductive (G/R) infections was related to these neuropsychological deficits in offspring with schizophrenia and other schizophrenia spectrum

A conceptual review of writing research in augmentative and alternative communication.

Studies addressing the cognitive processes of writing (i.e., planning, translating, reviewing, monitoring) as applied to individuals with complex communication needs were reviewed. Studies meeting inclusion criteria were identified through searching multiple electronic databases and summarized according to participants, cognitive process(es) addressed, tasks and measures, and principal findings. Twenty-five studies were identified in peer-reviewed journals, 12 of them descriptive studies of spelling abilities in augmentative communication, five addressing spelling intervention, and eight addre

Investigating the double-deficit hypothesis in Greek: findings from a longitudinal study.

This study examined longitudinally the double-deficit hypothesis in Greek, an orthographically consistent language, following a group of children from kindergarten to Grade 2. Four groups were formed on the basis of two composite scores of phonological and naming-speed criterion measures: a double-deficit group (DD; n = 17), a phonological deficit group (PD; n = 33), a naming deficit group (ND; n = 33), and a control group exhibiting no deficits (CnD; n = 159). The four groups were identified in Grade 1, and they were compared retrospectively in kindergarten only on the criterion measures, and

Memory performance related to organic and psychosocial illness attributions in somatoform pain disorder patients.

OBJECTIVE: Somatoform disorders are characterized by patterns of persistent bodily complaints. Organic illness attributions are assumed to represent a central supporting factor in the development and maintenance of somatoform disorders. Using group control design, we aimed to investigate the processing of illness-belief-related word stimuli in somatoform pain disorder patients. METHODS: Organic-related, psychosocial-related, and neutral word stimuli were presented to 14 somatoform pain patients with a predominantly organic illness attribution, 14 somatoform pain patients with a predominantly

TMS of the occipital cortex induces tactile sensations in the fingers of blind Braille readers.

Various non-visual inputs produce cross-modal responses in the visual cortex of early blind subjects. In order to determine the qualitative experience associated with these occipital activations, we systematically stimulated the entire occipital cortex using single pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in early blind subjects and in blindfolded seeing controls. Whereas blindfolded seeing controls reported only phosphenes following occipital cortex stimulation, some of the blind subjects reported tactile sensations in the fingers that were somatotopically organized onto the visual corte

Early experience of sex hormones as a predictor of reading, phonology, and auditory perception.

Previous research has indicated possible reciprocal connections between phonology and reading, and also connections between aspects of auditory perception and reading. The present study investigates these associations further by examining the potential influence of prenatal androgens using measures of digit ratio (the ratio of the lengths of the index and ring fingers). Those with low digit ratios (shorter index finger and therefore in the masculine direction) are hypothesised to have experienced greater "masculinisation" in the uterus. ANCOVA analyses using a verbal reasoning task as a covari

Late cognitive brain potentials, phonological and semantic classification of spoken words, and reading ability in children.

Event-related potential (ERP), reaction time, and response accuracy measures were obtained during rhyming and semantic classification of spoken words in 10 average (mean age 11.64 years) and 9 impaired reading (mean age 12.10 years) children. The behavioral measures of classification did not distinguish the groups. In the ERPs, rhyme processing produced more pronounced group differences than did semantic processing at about 480 ms, with a relatively more negative distribution for the impaired readers at centroparietal sites. At about 800 ms in both classification tasks, the impaired readers di

Patterns of performance on the Fuld Object Memory Evaluation in elderly inpatients with depression or dementia.

The Fuld Object Memory Evaluation (Fuld, 1981) was administered to 80 elderly adults (aged 60 to 90 years) who were hospitalized for evaluation and treatment of primary degenerative dementia (PDD), other organic disorders (e.g., Parkinson's disease or multi-infarct dementia), or major depression. Although mean performance in each of the diagnostic groups was below normative levels reported by Fuld (1981), PDD patients performed significantly more poorly than those with depression or other organic disorders. Analysis of subscore patterns failed to support the hypothesis of a selective memory de

Students' Perceptions of Trigger Warnings in Medical Education.

UNLABELLED: Phenomenon: Trigger warnings are verbal statements or written warnings that alert students in advance to potentially distressing material. Medical education includes numerous subjects frequently identified as triggers, such as abuse, rape, self-injurious behaviors, eating disorders, drug and alcohol addiction, and suicide. Thus, exploring medical students' perceptions of trigger warnings may provide a valuable perspective on the use of these warnings in higher education. APPROACH: As part of a larger descriptive, cross-sectional survey study on medical education, we assessed 1st-

APOE ɛ4 Carriers Show Delayed Recovery of Verbal Memory and Smaller Entorhinal Volume in the First Year After Ischemic Stroke.

BACKGROUND: The apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene ɛ4 allele is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and cardiovascular disease. However, its relationship with cognition and brain volume after stroke is not clear. OBJECTIVE: We compared cognition and medial temporal lobe volumes in APOEɛ4 carriers and non-carriers in the first year after ischemic stroke. METHODS: We sampled 20 APOEɛ4 carriers and 20 non-carriers from a larger cohort of 135 ischemic stroke participants in the longitudinal CANVAS study. Participants were matched on a range of demographic and stroke characteristics. We used linear m

Effects of occupational exposure to chlorpyrifos on neuropsychological function: a prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to chlorpyrifos (CPF), an organophosphorus (OP) anticholinesterase insecticide, occurs typically in settings where multiple agents are present (e.g., agriculture) and quantitative dose measures may be absent (e.g., pesticide application). Such exposures allow few opportunities to study potential neurobehavioral effects of CPF alone. We studied the relationship between CPF exposure and behavioral function among CPF manufacturing workers, which allowed identification, measurement, and estimation of exposure and important non-exposure variables that potentially could affect s

Examination of the structural, convergent, and incremental validity of the Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales (RIAS) with a clinical sample.

Empirical examination of the Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales (RIAS; C. R. Reynolds & R. W. Kamphaus, 2003a) has produced mixed results regarding its internal structure and convergent validity. Various aspects of validity of RIAS scores with a sample (N = 521) of adolescents and adults seeking psychological evaluations at a university-based clinic were examined. Results from exploratory factor analysis indicated only 1 factor, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) indicated that the 1-factor model was a good fit and a better fit than the 2-factor model. Hierarchical factor analysis ind

Distinct memory profiles in Alzheimer's disease.

Memory impairment is a prominent defining feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the degree to which the profile of memory impairment is uniform across patients is not fully resolved. The study examined patterns of memory impairment in a large cohort of AD patients, with particular attention to the relationship between working and long-term declarative memory. Tests of working memory, visual and verbal recall and recognition, and recent personal memory were administered to 67 AD patients in the early to moderate stages of disease and to 30 age-matched controls. Performance on all measures wa

Dynamics of visual recognition revealed by fMRI.

In our daily lives, recognizing a familiar object is an effortless and seemingly instantaneous process. Our knowledge of how the brain accomplished this formidable task, however, is quite limited. The present study takes a holistic approach to examining the neural processes that underlie recognition memory. A unique paradigm, in which visual information about the identity of a person or word is slowly titrated to human observers during a functional imaging session, is employed to uncover the dynamics of the visual recognition in the brain. The results of study reveal multiple unique stages in
