Insights from 1096 clinical cases: pioneering a universal grading system for vernal keratoconjunctivitis management.

AIM: To analyse the clinical and demographic profiles of patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and propose a grading for VKC based on corneal status and symptom periodicity rather than disease activity. METHODS: Retrospective observational study from January 2015 to January 2020 in India. VKC grading was based on past/present clinical signs and frequency of symptoms rather than disease activity. The electronic medical records were screened and details of VKC patients diagnosed by cornea specialists were recorded and analysed. RESULTS: 1096 VKC patients with a mean age of onset of 7

An Investigation of the Psychosocial Outcomes of Dry Eye Disease Treatment in Children with Computer Vision Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is a common disorder among children and is often associated with dry eye disease (DED). While researchers have shown a higher prevalence of psychopathology in older patients with DED, the impact of CVS-induced DED on the psychological state of children is not well known. This study aimed to evaluate psychological outcomes before and after DED treatment in pediatric patients with CVS-related DED. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, a total of 38 children (32 girls, 6 boys) with CVS-related DED were evaluated with the Schirmer test, tear break-up tim

When noise becomes signal: A study of blink rate using an eye tracker.

PURPOSE: Although blink rate is considered important for digital eye strain and dry eye conditions, its assessment has been mostly manual. This study aimed at quantifying blink rate automatically using the Eyelink 1000 Plus eye tracker and comparing it with manual counting. Additionally, blink rate was correlated with reading eye movements and reading speed. METHODS: Thirty participants (mean age 26.8 ± 3.5 years; 19 females) were enrolled. An on-screen reading task for 3 min duration, was repeated 3 times with a 2-min break between the repetitions. During this task, eye movements and blinks

Impact of myopia control spectacle lenses with highly aspherical lenslets on peripheral visual acuity and central visual acuity with peripheral gaze.

PURPOSE: Myopia control spectacle lenses with peripheral lenslets are gaining popularity because they are non-invasive and easy to manage, and ongoing clinical trials have shown promising results. This study aimed to evaluate peripheral and central visual acuity (VA) with peripheral gaze in conditions where the eyes are turned to look obliquely through the lenslets. METHODS: High-contrast (100%) VA was measured at 300 cm and 10 lx. For each test, two lens designs were evaluated in counterbalanced order: a spectacle lens with highly aspherical lenslets (HALs) and a standard single-vision lens

Dual muscle tendon vibration does not impede performance of a goal-directed aiming task.

AIMS: Application of muscle-tendon vibration within the frequency range of 70-120Hz has been studied as a tool to stimulate somatosensory afferents with both the goal of studying human sensorimotor control and of improving post-stroke motor performance. Specific to applications for rehabilitation, current evidence is mixed as to whether dual muscle-tendon vibration is detrimental to the performance of goal-directed upper-limb movements. The current study aimed to determine the effects of muscle-tendon vibration over the wrist flexors and extensors (dual vibration) on performance of a computer

Analysis and modeling of myopia-related factors based on questionnaire survey.

With the rapid development of science and technology, the trend of low age myopia is becoming increasingly significant. The latest national survey done by the Chinese government found that more than 80% of Chinese teenagers suffer from myopia. Adolescent myopia is closely related to living environment, heredity, and living habits. Quantifying the relationship between myopia and living environment, heredity, and living habits is conductive to the prevention and intervention of adolescent myopia. In this study, we investigated the relationships between four main factors (environment, habits, par

Testing the efficacy of vision training for presbyopia: alternating-distance training does not facilitate vision improvement compared to fixed-distance training.

PURPOSE: Current evidence demonstrates the effectiveness of vision training for presbyopia. We developed and examined a training program to test the effectiveness of alternating focal distances as a training method. METHODS: We devised a sharpness discrimination task, in which participants judged whether the stimulus was a sine- or square-wave grating, and tested in two training groups and one control group. In the alternating-distance training group (N = 8, age 49-64), participants had to alternate the fixation between a near- and far-screen. In the fixed-distance training group (N=8, age 47

Effectiveness of Vestibular Rehabilitation after Concussion: A Systematic Review of Randomised Controlled Trial.

Introduction: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) affects approximately 740 cases per 100,000 people. Impairments related to mTBI include vertigo, dizziness, balance, gait disorders double or blurry vision, and others. The efficacy on acute or chronic phase and dosage of vestibular rehabilitation (VR) in reducing these symptoms is not clearly stated. To clarify these points, we performed a systematic review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Methods: A systematic literature search was performed from 2015 to 2022 on PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Trial SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, and PEDRO. Elig

A plasma metabolomic signature of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy showing taurine and nicotinamide deficiencies.

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is the most common disorder due to mitochondrial DNA mutations and complex I deficiency. It is characterized by an acute vision loss, generally in young adults, with a higher penetrance in males. How complex I dysfunction induces the peculiar LHON clinical presentation remains an unanswered question. To gain an insight into this question, we carried out a non-targeted metabolomic investigation using the plasma of 18 LHON patients, during the chronic phase of the disease, comparing them to 18 healthy controls. A total of 500 metabolites were screened o

Top 20 Research Studies of 2018 for Primary Care Physicians.

In 2018, through regular surveillance of more than 110 English-language research journals, 255 research studies met the criteria to become POEMs (patient-oriented evidence that matters). Using a validated tool, physician members of the Canadian Medical Association rated these POEMs for their relevance to patients in their practices. This article summarizes the clinical questions and bottom-line answers from the top 20 POEMs of 2018, as determined by these physicians. The top POEMs summarize potentially practice-changing research on the importance of accurate blood pressure measurement, the unc

Prevention of Iatrogenic Keratectasia.

Iatrogenic corneal ectasia is a rare but devastating complication after refractive surgery. While its incidence appears to be declining, it has not been eliminated. Its cause is probably related to a combination of an intrinsic predisposition to ectasia and an additional anatomical destabilising effect from the refractive surgery. Determining which eyes are intrinsically "weak" and exactly how much additional "weakening" an eye can withstand before developing progressive thinning and protrusion are both difficult tasks. The essentially universal availability of corneal topography and the incre

Hypomorphic mutations in TRNT1 cause retinitis pigmentosa with erythrocytic microcytosis.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a highly heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by degeneration of the retinal photoreceptor cells and progressive loss of vision. While hundreds of mutations in more than 100 genes have been reported to cause RP, discovering the causative mutations in many patients remains a significant challenge. Exome sequencing in an individual affected with non-syndromic RP revealed two plausibly disease-causing variants in TRNT1, a gene encoding a nucleotidyltransferase critical for tRNA processing. A total of 727 additional unrelated individuals with molecularly unch
