BACKGROUND/AIMS: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is already utilized in the important clinical diagnosis of brain ischemia and also for differentiating brain abscesses from metastatic brain tumors. Recent technical developments make DWI of the body feasible. Several studies have revealed the usefulness of DWI for the diagnosis of liver, ovary, parotid gland, kidney, and breast tumors. We herein present cases of gastric cancer detected by DWI and discuss the efficacy of DWI for the diagnosis of gastric cancer.
METHODOLOGY: We performed DWI, enhanced computed tomography (CT) and endoscopic exa…

This article discusses acute bacterial, viral, toxin-mediated, and parasitic neurologic infections, emphasizing those infections that are potentially treatable, are rapidly fatal if untreated, or pose a significant risk of person-to-person transmission.

BACKGROUND Central nervous system (CNS) manifestations of tuberculosis (TB) account for approximately 1-2% of all TB cases worldwide. Tuberculomas, which are granulomatous lesions of the CNS diagnostically confirmed through biopsy, can mimic more common intracranial pathologies, including abscesses and neoplasms. This report describes a patient with pulmonary TB who presented with seizure and was ultimately diagnosed with a right temporal lobe TB mimicking a brain abscess. CASE REPORT A 30-year-old woman with alcohol use disorder, polysubstance use, and pulmonary TB previously treated with rif…

OBJECTIVES: To describe the epidemiology, microbiology and clinical outcomes of adult patients (aged ≥16 years) diagnosed with bacterial intracranial abscesses in the Republic of Ireland.
METHODS: A 12-year retrospective analysis from 2010 to 2021 was conducted in the Republic of Ireland's two neurosurgical centres. Radiological, microbiological, and medical records of adult patients with confirmed intracranial abscesses were analysed.
RESULTS: Of 192 patients, 127 were male (66.2%); mean age at diagnosis was 54 years (SD = 10.5). Community-acquisition occurred in 183 (95.3%) cases. The high

Mycoplasma pneumoniae, a frequent respiratory pathogen, can cause neurological disease manifestations. We here present a case of M. pneumoniae as cause of meningitis and occurrence of an intracranial abscess as a complication of mastoiditis with septic cerebral venous sinus thrombosis in a patient with multiple sclerosis on anti-CD20 therapy.

Listeria monocytogenes (LM) bacterium is a cause of central nervous system (CNS) infection and the most common cause of rhombencephalitis in immunocompetent elderly.A prompt identification of this condition should be always desirable, since its clinical manifestations are often unspecific with prodromal symptoms leading to high rates of morbidity and mortality if underestimated.CNS listeriosis magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are generally not specific. However, in the appropriate clinical setting, focal brainstem hyperintensity on T2-weighted pulse sequences associated with ring-enha

A 51-year-old woman developed profound coma complicating subarachnoid hemorrhage after aneurysmal rupture. An external ventricular drain was inserted. FDG PET/CT was performed for prognostication purposes and showed global cortical hypometabolism. This was consistent with the clinical findings of an unresponsive wakefulness syndrome. During the follow-up, ventriculitis was diagnosed. Because of no clinical improvement under focused, high-dose antimicrobial treatment, a second FDG PET/CT was performed. It showed an improved diffuse cortical fixation and an intense intraventricular hyperfixation

The formation of an intracranial abscess secondary to sphenoid sinus occlusion after nasoseptal flap skull base reconstruction has not been previously described. We report such a case that occurred at our institution in a 23-year-old man who underwent flap reconstruction for a cerebrospinal fluid leak. We determined that occlusion of the sphenoid sinus outflow might have played a role in this complication. The patient was treated via a combined surgical and medical approach that entailed a bur-hole craniotomy and endoscopic debridement followed by administration of an intravenous antibiotic. T

The aim is to present unusual clinical course and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of pituitary abscess. A 59-year-old man presented with fever, polyuria, polydipsia and marked weight loss within the last two months. Basic endocrinology tests revealed the presence of anterior pituitary dysfunction, associated with central diabetes insipidus and increased levels of inflammatory markers. The presence of expansile sellar lesion, showing restricted diffusion signal pattern compatible with acute pituitary pyogenic abscess was found on MRI. Regression of pituitary abscess was obvious during

Fibrous dysplasia of the cranial air sinuses is rarely reported in the literature. This is the first report of frontal lobe abscess (FLA) associated with fibrous dysplasia of the frontal sinus (FDFS). A 29-year-old female presented with seizures and acute confusion. Cranial computed tomography (CT) revealed fibrous dysplasia of the left frontal sinus and associated FLA. She was referred to the neurosurgical service and the abscess and dysplastic tissue were removed. Histological examination confirmed fibrous dysplasia. We review the radiological appearance of FDFS with FLA. Clinicians should b

The term, odontogenic infection refers to an infection that originates in the tooth proper or in the tissues that closely surround it; said infection then progresses along the periodontia down to the apex, involving periapical bone and from this area, it then spreads through the bone and periosteum towards near-by or more distant structures. The relevance of this type of infection lies in that it can cause infections that compromise more distant structures (via direct spread and distant spread), for example, intracraneal, retropharyngeal and pulmonary pleural infections. Dissemination by means

Cerebellar abscess is a serious complication of ear disease that requires early diagnosis and treatment. Computerized axial tomography with contrast enhancement is very useful for the diagnosis of these abscesses. This fact is illustrated by a case report of a cerebellar abscess secondary to chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma detected in one of our patients. On examination otorrhoea, fever, headache, vomiting and had hemilateral conductive hearing loss. The therapy included radical operation, excision of the abscess and antibiotic therapy.

Dermabacter species are commonly isolated from the skin and other body sites but rarely show pathogenicity in humans. A case of Dermabacter hominis cerebral abscess is reported which presented as a contrast-enhancing intracranial mass in a renal transplant patient.
