BACKGROUND: A case of homozygous familial lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) deficiency with a novel homozygous LCAT missense mutation (replacement of methionine by arginine at position 293 in the amino acid sequence of the LCAT protein) is reported.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The probable diagnosis was suggested by findings of marked high density lipoprotein (HDL) deficiency, corneal opacification, anemia, and renal insufficiency. The diagnosis was confirmed by two dimensional gel electrophoresis of HDL, the measurement of free and esterified cholesterol, and sequencing of the LCAT gene.

Peters plus syndrome is a rare condition, with ocular and systemic malformations. We describe a case of unilateral Peters anomaly with previously unreported systemic findings associated with this syndrome. In addition, autopsy findings suggested that severe developmental angle anomalies may be the cause of glaucoma in some of these patients.

This review assesses current knowledge of the clinical, genetic, and biochemical features of familial high density lipoprotein (HDL) deficiency syndromes. The focus is on HDL deficiency states occurring in the absence of severe hypertriglyceridemia or lecithin/cholesterol acyltransferase deficiency. Specific entities falling within this category include Tangier disease, familial HDL deficiency with planar xanthomas, familial apolipoprotein A-I and C-III deficiency (formerly known as apolipoprotein A-I absence), familial deficiency of apolipoprotein A-I and C-III, fish-eye disease, familial hyp

INTRODUCTION: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) represents a group of rare inherited mechanobullous disorders characterized by extreme skin and mucosal fragility. Dystrophic EB (DEB), caused by mutations in the COL7A1 gene, often leads to cycles of blistering, healing, and scarring with multisystem involvement, including the gastrointestinal tract. Esophageal strictures are not uncommon in recessive DEB (RDEB), appearing after the first decade of life (∼12.6 years). We describe a relatively early complication in a 5-year-old child.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old girl with genetically confirmed RDEB

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Cases of ocular trauma in developing countries are often found with more severe conditions due to increased socioeconomic burden, inadequate safety measures, lack of optimal treatment facilities, and poor education. Here we present a case on an elderly worker in a developing country, showing the importance of prompt treatment albeit in a resource-limited setting.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old male metalworker presented with closed globe injury after metal debris impact during his work shift 3 h ago. Physical examination showed left eye visual acuity of 1/60, co

PURPOSE: Acanthamoeba chorioretinitis is a rare manifestation of the parasitic infection, and reported cases often result in enucleation. Surgical removal of Acanthamoeba chorioretinitis has not been previously described. We report a surgical case of Acanthamoeba chorioretinitis spread from keratitis that ultimately resulted in a disease-free outcome.
OBSERVATIONS: A healthy 80-year-old male with a history of keratoconus requiring a penetrating keratoplasty in the fellow eye presented with a severe corneal ulcer clinically consistent with Acanthamoeba keratitis. He ultimately required a penet

Recent studies have identified both recessive and dominant forms of mitochondrial disease that result from ATAD3A variants. The recessive form includes subjects with biallelic deletions mediated by non-allelic homologous recombination. We report five unrelated neonates with a lethal metabolic disorder characterized by cardiomyopathy, corneal opacities, encephalopathy, hypotonia, and seizures in whom a monoallelic reciprocal duplication at the ATAD3 locus was identified. Analysis of the breakpoint junction fragment indicated that these 67 kb heterozygous duplications were likely mediated by non

INTRODUCTION: Congenital glaucoma is frequently associated with visual impairment due to optic nerve damage, corneal opacities, cataracts and amblyopia. Poor vision in childhood is related to global developmental problems, and referral to vision habilitation/rehabilitation services should be without delay to promote efficient management of the impaired vision.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze data concerning visual response, the use of optical correction and prescribed low vision aids in a population of children with congenital glaucoma.
METHOD: The authors analyzed data from 100 children with congenit

OBJECTIVES: The post-operative vision is used as benchmark to determine the quality of cataract surgery. However, late presentation and co-morbidities influence the visual gain and they should also be considered while auditing cataract surgeries. The authors present method of analysis of cataract surgeries for older than 30 years of aged patients performed by ophthalmologists in Oman during 2003.
METHODS: Ophthalmologists evaluated visual and ocular status of eyes with cataract. Cataract was operated using operative microscope and lens was implanted in the eye. The vision was recorded six wee

In men with classical Fabry disease (alpha-galactosidase A [alpha-Gal A] deficiency), kidney failure occurs as early as the second decade of life. In contrast, men with the mild "cardiac variant" have late-onset cardiac involvement and proteinuria but usually do not have renal failure. To investigate the nature of renal involvement in the cardiac variant of Fabry disease, the renal function and morphology were assessed in a 75-year-old affected man. He had mild congestive heart failure, a reduced left ventricular ejection fraction, and hypercholesterolemia but lacked the classical Fabry diseas

The authors present a case of a thirty-eight-year-old patient with Alport syndrome. The patient had several ocular symptoms of the disease and has been treated for systemic problems in connection with Alport syndrome since he was fifteen years old. At that age the patient also underwent a kidney transplant in order to deal with renal insufficiency. To date, he still uses immunosuppressants and antihypertensives. Furthermore, the patient suffers from perceptive deafness. The patient visited our clinic in 2021 with a request to solve his high refractive error, in which the diopters were so high

Complex molecular interactions dictate the developmental steps that lead to a mature and functional cornea and lens. Peters anomaly is one subtype of anterior segment dysgenesis especially due to abnormal development of the cornea and lens. MSX2 was recently implicated as a potential gene that is critical for anterior segment development. However, the role of MSX2 within the complex mechanisms of eye development remains elusive. Our present study observed the morphologic changes in conventional Msx2 knockout (KO) mice and found phenotypes consistent with Peters anomaly and microphthalmia seen
