Maternal exposure to outdoor air pollution and congenital limb deficiencies in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital limb deficiencies (CLDs) are a relatively common group of birth defects whose etiology is mostly unknown. Recent studies suggest maternal air pollution exposure as a potential risk factor. AIM: To investigate the relationship between ambient air pollution exposure during early pregnancy and offspring CLDs. METHODS: The study population was identified from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a population-based multi-center case-control study, and consisted of 615 CLD cases and 5,701 controls with due dates during 1997 through 2006. Daily averages and/or maxima

Evaluation of antenatal multiple micronutrient versus iron and folic acid supplementation in UNRWA health clinics serving Palestine refugees in Jordan: A systems trial.

BACKGROUND: Multiple micronutrient deficiencies coexist among pregnant Palestine refugees. WHO recommends preventive multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) guided by research. OBJECTIVE: We compared implementation outcomes of antenatal MMS and folic acid/iron-folic acid (FA/IFA) regimens during a 10-month systems trial in Jordan. METHODS: Thirteen clinics prescribed a 15-nutrient MMS at registration in 180-count bottles. Twelve clinics prescribed FA (0.4 mg) daily during first trimester visits and IFA (100 mg iron+0.35 mg FA) 2, 3 or 7 times/week thereafter (preexisting standard-of-car

Surgical treatment and outcomes of neural tube defects at the university of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia: a two-year retrospective review.

INTRODUCTION: Spina bifida, particularly myelomeningocele (MMC), is one of the most common congenital central nervous system abnormalities compatible with life. Despite global efforts to reduce its incidence through folic acid fortification, the burden remains high in low-resource settings like Ethiopia. This study aimed to analyze the pattern of presentation, clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of spina bifida spectrum disorders (SBSDs) at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 240 neonates a

Hematinic deficiency in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hematinic deficiency irrespective of anemia is not uncommon in patients with heart failure. We studied the prevalence, distribution, and etiology of anemia in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and compared it with non-anemic patients. METHODS: Congestive heart failure (CHF) was diagnosed by modified Framingham criteria and ejection fraction (EF) <40%. Iron deficiency (ID) anemia was defined as serum ferritin level <100 ng/ml (absolute) or 100-300 ng/ml with transferrin saturation <20% (functional). Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency w

Adult celiac disease with severe or partial villous atrophy: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: While severe villous atrophy (SVA) is the most typical histological feature in adult celiac disease (ACD), partial villous atrophy (PVA) is now also frequently found. So far, the impact of the severity of villous atrophy on the clinical presentation of ACD has been scarcely investigated. We aimed to compare the clinical, biological and immune features and outcomes in ACD patients presenting with PVA at diagnosis versus patients with SVA. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Medical files of 48 patients with ACD diagnosed between 1992 and 2003 were retrospectively studied. The diagnosis

Review of the magnitude of folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies worldwide.

Human deficiencies of folate and vitamin B12 result in adverse effects which may be of public health significance, but the magnitude of these deficiencies is unknown. Therefore, we examine the prevalence data currently available, assess global coverage of surveys, determine the frequency with which vitamin status assessment methods are used, and identify patterns of status related to geographical distribution and human development. Surveys were identified through PubMed and the Vitamin and Mineral Nutrition Information System at the World Health Organization (WHO). Since different thresholds w

Folic acid supplementation and malaria susceptibility and severity among people taking antifolate antimalarial drugs in endemic areas.

BACKGROUND: Description of the condition Malaria, an infectious disease transmitted by the bite of female mosquitoes from several Anopheles species, occurs in 87 countries with ongoing transmission (WHO 2020). The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that, in 2019, approximately 229 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide, with 94% occurring in the WHO's African region (WHO 2020). Of these malaria cases, an estimated 409,000 deaths occurred globally, with 67% occurring in children under five years of age (WHO 2020). Malaria also negatively impacts the health of women during pregnancy,

Monitoring and parenteral administration of micronutrients, phosphate and magnesium in critically ill patients: The VITA-TRACE survey.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Despite the presumed importance of preventing and treating micronutrient and mineral deficiencies, it is still not clear how to optimize measurement and administration in critically ill patients. In order to design future comparative trials aimed at optimizing micronutrient and mineral management, an important first step is to gain insight in the current practice of micronutrient, phosphate and magnesium monitoring and administration. METHODS: Within the metabolism-endocrinology-nutrition (MEN) section of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), the micronut

Hyperhomocysteinemia exaggerates adventitial inflammation and angiotensin II-induced abdominal aortic aneurysm in mice.

RATIONALE: A number of epidemiological studies have suggested an association of hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), but discrepancies exist. In addition, we lack direct evidence supporting a causal role. OBJECTIVE: We determined the association and contribution of HHcy to AAA formation. METHODS AND RESULTS: We first performed a meta-analysis of studies involving 1489 subjects and found a strong association of HHcy and AAA (odds ratio, 7.39). Next, we used angiotensin II-infused male apolipoprotein E-deficient mice and tested whether HHcy contributes to AAA pathog

Effect of multiple micronutrient-fortified bouillon on micronutrient status among women and children in the Northern Region of Ghana: Protocol for the Condiment Micronutrient Innovation Trial (CoMIT), a community-based randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Micronutrient deficiencies are prevalent in West Africa, particularly among women of reproductive age (WRA) and young children. Bouillon is a promising food fortification vehicle due to its widespread consumption. This study aims to evaluate the impact of multiple micronutrient-fortified bouillon cubes, compared to control bouillon cubes (fortified with iodine only), on micronutrient status and hemoglobin concentrations among lactating and non-lactating WRA and young children in northern Ghana. METHODS: This randomized, controlled doubly-masked trial will be conducted in the Kum

[The nutritional and health status of the Latin American woman].

Latin America is a region where countries have various levels of socioeconomic development. Thus, the living standards and health status of its people differ significantly in the midst of a mosaic of social, ethnic, cultural and economic realities. Social inequalities and extreme poverty determine significant differences, not only in the magnitude of health indicators, but also in the type of pathology prevalent. People in the high socioeconomic levels are affected by nutritional diseases characterized by excessive food intake, while people from the low socioeconomic levels are affected by und
