Primary bilateral macronodular adrenocortical hyperplasia (PBMAH) patient with ARMC5 mutations.

BACKGROUND: Primary bilateral macronodular adrenocortical hyperplasia (PBMAH) is a highly heterogeneous disease with divergent manifestations ranging from asymptomatic subclinical Cushing syndrome (CS) to overt Cushing syndrome with severe complications. ARMC5 mutations occur in 20 to 55% PBMAH patients usually with more severe phenotypes. Different ARMC5 mutations might be associated with diverse phenotypes of PBMAH. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with progressive weight gain and severe hypertension. He presented typical CS and its classical metabolic and b

A qualitative study of alcohol use disorder psychotherapies for transgender and nonbinary individuals: Opportunities for cultural adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) populations experience high rates of hazardous drinking (HD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) as well as unique treatment barriers. This is due, in-part, to discrimination and stigma within and outside of the healthcare system. Cultural adaptation of clinical interventions can improve outcomes for marginalized populations, but no such adapted interventions exist for AUD among TGNB individuals. This study sought to understand how TGNB individuals perceive currently available AUD psychotherapies and to generate knowledge about potential areas for cultur

Neural distinctiveness and reinstatement of hippocampal representations support unitization for associations.

The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is critical to associative memory success, yet not all types of associations may be processed in a similar manner within MTL subregions. In particular, previous work suggests intra- and inter-item associations not only exhibit differences in overall rates of recollection, but also recruit different MTL subregions. Whereas intra-item associations, akin to unitization, take advantage of associations between within-item features, inter-item associations form links across discrete items. The current work examines the neural differences between these two types of asso

Opportunities, challenges, and contextual supports to promote enacting maturing during adolescence.

Conceptions of adolescent "storm and stress" may be tied to a developmental mismatch that exists between young people's need for meaningful roles and autonomy - which we refer to as a need for enacting maturity - and the lack of such opportunities in most adolescents' contexts. First, we summarize our previous work on enacting maturity, including a review of the key components, links to wellbeing, and the nuances and limitations of this construct. Next, we extend this work by considering how the ecological contexts (e.g., family, school, community) young people are embedded in and their variou

Viscosity Plane-wave UltraSound (ViPLUS) in the assessment of parotid and submandibular glands in healthy subjects - preliminary results.

AIMS: Viscosity is an important mechanical property directly linked to the shear wave dispersion within tissues. The purpose of this study was to establish the normal viscosity value of the parotid gland (PG) and submandibular gland (SMG) in a group of healthy subjects, using the novel Viscosity Plane-wave UltraSound (ViPLUS) technique, and to assess its potential dependence on gender and age. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group included a total of 49 healthy volunteers (median age 31, 65% females) prospectively examined between February 2021 and March 2021. The viscosity of both PG and SMG

Design and validation of virtual environments for the treatment of cleaning obsessive-compulsive disorder.

During the coronavirus outbreak, it was noted that pre-existing psychological illnesses worsened, and numerous research indicate that those with contamination-related obsessions and cleaning compulsions (C-OCD) may be more affected. Virtual Reality (VR) and other immersive technologies have shown to be effective for the treatment of disorders related to anxiety, thus showing their potential to transform OCD treatment by means of integrating virtual elements. VR exposure has shown benefits compared to live or imagined exposure, however, to be effective it must be able to elicit high emotional a

Investigating the Association Between Polygenic Risk Scores for Alzheimer's Disease With Cognitive Performance and Intrinsic Functional Connectivity in Healthy Adults.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology is present many years before the onset of clinical symptoms. AD dementia cannot be treated. Timely and early detection of people at risk of developing AD is key for primary and secondary prevention. Moreover, understanding the underlying pathology that is present in the earliest stages of AD, and the genetic predisposition to that might contribute to the development of targeted disease-modifying treatments. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to explore whether genetic disposition to AD in asymptomatic individuals is associated with altered intri

Deep CTS: a Deep Neural Network for Identification MRI of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common peripheral nerve disease in adults; it can cause pain, numbness, and even muscle atrophy and will adversely affect patients' daily life and work. There are no standard diagnostic criteria that go against the early diagnosis and treatment of patients. MRI as a novel imaging technique can show the patient's condition more objectively, and several characteristics of carpal tunnel syndrome have been found. However, various image sequences, heavy artifacts, small lesion characteristics, high volume of imagine reading, and high difficulty in MRI interpretatio

Radiomics analysis of unaffected side changes in classic trigeminal neuralgia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the subtle differences in the structure of the unaffected trigeminal nerve between patients with classic trigeminal neuralgia (CTN) and healthy controls (HCs) by means of radiomics, so as to further explore the etiological mechanism of trigeminal neuralgia (TN). METHODS: The imagine data of 95 CTN patients and 89 matched HCs were collected and retrospectively analyzed. They were assigned to four groups according to the presence or absence of neurovascular compression (NVC) of the unaffected trigeminal nerve (HCs with and without NVC; CTN patients with and without NVC

How relevant is climate change research for climate change policy? An empirical analysis based on Overton data.

Climate change is an ongoing topic in nearly all areas of society since many years. A discussion of climate change without referring to scientific results is not imaginable. This is especially the case for policies since action on the macro scale is required to avoid costly consequences for society. In this study, we deal with the question of how research on climate change and policy are connected. In 2019, the new Overton database of policy documents was released including links to research papers that are cited by policy documents. The use of results and recommendations from research on clim

Association of hearing loss and tinnitus symptoms with health-related quality of life among long-term oropharyngeal cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the association of hearing loss and tinnitus with overall health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among long-term oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) survivors. METHODS: This study included OPC survivors treated between 2000 and 2013 and surveyed from September 2015 to July 2016. Hearing loss and tinnitus were measured by asking survivors to rate their "difficulty with hearing loss and/or ringing in the ears" from 0 (not present) to 10 (as bad as you can imagine). Hearing loss and tinnitus scores were categorized as follows: 0 for none, 1-4 for mild, and 5-10 for mod

Putting human Tid-1 in context: an insight into its role in the cell and in different disease states.

BACKGROUND: Tumorous imaginal disc 1 (hTid-1) or DnaJ homolog subfamily A member 3 (DNAJA3), is a part of the heat shock protein (Hsp) 40 family and is predominantly found to reside in the mitochondria. hTid-1 has two mRNA splicing variants, hTid-1S and hTid-1L of 40 and 43 kDa respectively in the cytosol which are later processed upon import into the mitochondrial matrix. hTid-1 protein is a part of the DnaJ family of proteins which are co-chaperones and specificity factors for DnaK proteins of the Hsp70 family, and bind to Hsp70, thereby activating its ATPase activity. hTid-1 has been found

Clinical implications of congenital interruption of inferior vena cava.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Inferior vena cava (IVC) interruption is rare and can be detected through prenatal or postnatal imaging. It usually occurs in patients with heterotaxy syndrome with bilateral left-sidedness (left isomerism or polysplenia syndrome), indicating a laterality defect. However, its long-term outcomes remain unclear. METHODS: This retrospective study included a patient cohort with evidence of IVC interruption based on imagining data (1980-2019) selected from our institutional database. RESULTS: We included 34 (male/female = 14/20) patients with IVC interruption. Most of the pati

Filler-induced non-thrombotic pulmonary embolism after genital aesthetic injection.

Genital aesthetic procedures have increased in popularity among women and men. Many clinicians tried to expand the application of fill injection by using it for genital aesthetic injection. However, this procedure is not so safe as imagined and may lead to a fatal complication of pulmonary embolism. This article summarizes the clinical manifestations and proposed mechanism of the filler-induced non-thrombotic pulmonary embolism (FINTPE) cases. A literature review was performed with the search keywords including "genital aesthetic injection, vaginal injection, vaginoplasty, vaginal tightening,

Cerebellar Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Reconfigures Brain Networks Involved in Motor Execution and Mental Imagery.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is growingly applied to the cerebellum to modulate the activity of cerebellar circuitry, affecting both motor and cognitive performances in a polarity-specific manner. The remote effects of tDCS are mediated in particular via the dentato-thalamo-cortical pathway. We showed recently that tDCS of the cerebellum exerts dynamic effects on resting state networks. We tested the neural hypothesis that tDCS reconfigurates brain networks involved in motor execution (ME) and motor mental imagery (MMI). We combined tDCS applied over the right cerebellum and

Non-pharmacological treatment of gambling disorder: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: The main focus of the non-pharmacological treatment of Gambling Disorder (GD) is the behaviour, cognition and motivation of the patient, addressing the psychological determinants of gambling. Although there is not a gold standard non-pharmacological treatment yet, many studies already had promising results, and the outcomes were even better when pharmacotherapies were combined with psychotherapies. This review intended to synthesise the efficacy of various available non-pharmacological therapies for GD evaluated in randomized controlled trials. METHODS: A systematic search was con
