Lessons From Building a Large, Public HIV-Related Database in Support of the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the US Initiative.

The HIV epidemic remains a national priority in the United States, and the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative has renewed the call for expanded prevention and treatment strategies capable of reducing new HIV infections by 90% by 2030. Achieving this goal requires robust, integrated data for understanding HIV-related needs, barriers to care, and the effectiveness of interventions. However, despite the existence of numerous publicly available datasets, few integrate multiple domains such as HIV outcomes, social determinants of health, and community-level factors. The lack of unified data and dif

HIV-sensitive social protection for vulnerable young women in East and Southern Africa: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Social protection programmes are considered HIV-sensitive when addressing risk, vulnerability or impact of HIV infection. Socio-economic interventions, like livelihood and employability programmes, address HIV vulnerabilities like poverty and gender inequality. We explored the HIV-sensitivity of socio-economic interventions for unemployed and out-of-school young women aged 15 to 30 years, in East and Southern Africa, a key population for HIV infection. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review using a narrative synthesis method and the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool for quality ap

Published Approaches to Improving Timeliness of Care for People with Sickle Cell Disease in the United States: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Although interventions have been implemented to reduce long hospital wait times in the United States, this issue persists, particularly among people with sickle cell disease (SCD), a condition that disproportionately affects non-Hispanic Black individuals. It remains unclear whether this persistence is due to a lack of variety of implemented interventions or limitations in the scope of existing programs. Therefore, this scoping review aims to examine published approaches and strategies related to improving the timeliness of care for people with SCD. METHODS: This scoping review wa

Mental health and psychosocial support interventions for individuals affected by gender-based violence in fragile contexts: A systematic review.

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a global public health crisis exacerbated in fragile settings by gender inequalities, displacement, and resource scarcity. While mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) interventions aim to support people with experience of GBV, research on their effectiveness across diverse fragile contexts remains limited. In this review, we answer the following questions: (1) What type(s) of MHPSS interventions are commonly implemented with survivors of GBV in humanitarian/fragile settings? (2) What outcome(s) are targeted by MHPSS interventions implemented for those ex

The CODE model: Object-mediated play as a scalable framework for dyadic co-regulation in early childhood.

The field of early childhood mental health faces a persistent and well-documented "implementation gap": evidence-based interventions for dyadic co-regulation work in clinics, but remain too resource-intensive to reach most families in everyday settings. This article introduces the CODE Model, an interdisciplinary framework designed to address this gap by reconfiguring the delivery of early regulatory support from therapist-mediated protocols to object-mediated, caregiver-implemented routines. Grounded in developmental psychology, interactional linguistics, and cognitive science-specifically th

User-Centered Design for Digital Patient-Navigation Tools in Oncology: Scoping Review.

BackgroundNavigation programs for patients with cancer improve access and continuity of care, yet their digital transformation is often limited by poor usability and inadequate uptake. Applying user-centered and human-centered design (UCD/HCD) principles may close this gap, but the extent to which such design methods are used and evaluated in oncology navigation tools remains unclear.ObjectiveThis scoping review identifies how UCD/HCD principles have been, and should be, applied in developing and implementing digital health tools for navigation for patients with cancer.MethodsA scoping review

Advanced responder training priorities in Kenya: A Delphi study with implications for low- and middle- income countries.

INTRODUCTION: Low- and middle- income countries account for 90 % of global trauma-related mortality. Organized prehospital emergency medical services and formal first responder systems are often lacking, contributing to this disproportionate injury burden. Lay first responder training programs have demonstrated effectiveness in addressing gaps in prehospital care. However, the curriculum, skills, and resources required to implement a context-appropriate advanced responder program remains unclear. METHODS: A three-round modified Delphi consensus was generated at the Masinde Muliro University o

From study design to executable code: automating target trial emulation with large language models.

OBJECTIVE: Implementing target trial emulation (TTE) studies as standardized, reproducible analytic workflows is technically demanding. We developed Text-guided Health-study Estimation and Specification Engine Using Strategus (THESEUS), which uses large language models (LLMs) to translate free-text study descriptions into structured analytic specifications and Strategus R scripts within the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) ecosystem. MATERIALS AND METHODS: THESEUS executes 2 steps: an LLM maps study descriptions to a JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) schema, and vali

Guidance of attention by statistical learning when multiple guidance mechanisms compete.

Previous research has shown that people are sensitive to statistical regularities and will implicitly learn to bias attention toward locations and features frequently associated with search targets. However, most prior work has involved a single biasing contingency. In Experiment 1, we investigate whether individuals can simultaneously learn and implement two distinct contingencies: one based on location and another based on color. The results suggest that both contingencies are learned implicitly and exert independent effects on attentional allocation. Experiments 2 and 3 examine whether shif

Operationalizing Health Equity in Public Emergency and Primary Care in Urban Brazil.

Health systems globally continue to struggle to translate health equity commitments into consistent day-to-day practice at the point of care. Although equity strategies are often articulated at national or system levels, frontline health care services frequently lack the governance structures, partnerships, operational tools, and learning environments needed to prioritize populations experiencing inequities amid competing clinical and organizational demands. This challenge is particularly visible in high-volume, resource-constrained settings. Early findings suggest that equity work becomes mor

Improving Access to Pediatric Surgery in LMICs Through Capacity-Building: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric surgical conditions are a significant source of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where children with surgically treatable conditions lack access to care owing to an insufficient number of pediatric surgeons, poor and limited training, and financial barriers. There is a growing shift from charitable missions to capacity-strengthening projects, which strengthen the skills and resources of communities. The objective of this study was to synthesize the literature to identify capacity-strengthening projects, their methods and outcomes, and th

Designing community facing tools for green stormwater infrastructure and groundwater monitoring: a model of interdisciplinary action research.

Anthropogenic stress associated with urban development can change groundwater hydrology and introduce contaminants that may compromise its utility. Green Stormwater infrastructure (GSI) alters local landscapes and uses natural flora to manage stormwater and mitigate flooding, but it may also influence groundwater hydrology, and contaminant fate and transport. This multidisciplinary project engaged with community groups to develop and implement a low-cost, citizen-led groundwater monitoring program at the GSI sociotechnical interface in Detroit, MI (USA). GSI installations were constructed at a

Piloting an external quality assurance program (QAP) for COVID-19 antigen rapid diagnostic tests (Ag-RDTs): findings and lessons learned from Cambodia.

Rapid antigen diagnostic tests (Ag-RDTs) that quickly and accurately identify SARS-CoV-2 are an essential part of the COVID-19 response, but multiple factors can affect the validity of Ag-RDTs results. In Cambodia, several commercial Ag-RDTs have become available since the COVID-19 outbreak, but quality control (QC) and external quality assurance (EQA) of these rapid tests have yet to be fully and systematically implemented. We collaborated with laboratory experts in Australia and piloted an EQA programme of the commonly used COVID-19 Ag-RDTs at the University of Health Sciences' MERIEUX Labor
