Robotic assisted orbital surgery for resection of advanced periocular tumours - a case series report on the feasibility, safety and outcome.

PURPOSE: Orbital surgery benefits from well-designed instrumentation that offers gentle tissue manipulation, high manoeuvrability and control. Nevertheless, in confined spaces, tissue manipulation must be accomplished with exceptionally high accuracy and precision. This is where robotic surgery offers an advantage. We aimed to evaluate a robotic-assisted surgical system's feasibility, safety and outcome in assisting tumour clearance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A case series of patients with advanced periocular tumours undergoing robotic-assisted globe-sparing resection was performed using the DaVi

Multifunctional Au-Ag NCs for luminescence and colorimetric double signal sensing of H2S and catalytic reduction of nitrophenol.

In this study, the N-Acetyl-l-Cysteine (NAC)-capped gold and silver bimetallic nanoclusters (NAC@Au-Ag NCs) was synthesized by reflux method. Due to the silver effect, the NAC@Au-Ag NCs exhibited strong photoluminescence at far-red/near-infrared regions and better catalytic performance than Au or Ag NCs. Upon addition of H2S, the Au-Ag NCs exhibited obvious fluorescence quench and color changes through the generation of metal sulfides and a static quenching process. The Au-Ag NCs displayed a wide linear luminescence response for H2S (18.5-217 μmol/L) with a detection limit of 0.269 μmol/L. Mor

A compact solution for vibrotactile proprioceptive feedback of wrist rotation and hand aperture.

BACKGROUND: Closing the control loop between users and their prostheses by providing artificial sensory feedback is a fundamental step toward the full restoration of lost sensory-motor functions. METHODS: We propose a novel approach to provide artificial proprioceptive feedback about two degrees of freedom using a single array of 8 vibration motors (compact solution). The performance afforded by the novel method during an online closed-loop control task was compared to that achieved using the conventional approach, in which the same information was conveyed using two arrays of 8 and 4 vibromo

Circulating miR-129-3p in combination with clinical factors predicts vascular calcification in hemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Vascular calcification (VC) commonly occurs and seriously increases the risk of cardiovascular events and mortality in patients with hemodialysis. For optimizing individual management, we will develop a diagnostic multivariable prediction model for evaluating the probability of VC. METHODS: The study was conducted in four steps. First, identification of miRNAs regulating osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in calcified condition. Second, observing the role of miR-129-3p on VC in vitro and the association between circulating miR-129-3p and VC in hemod

Prospective Validation and Usability Evaluation of a Mobile Diagnostic App for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Background/Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) classification relies on polysomnography (PSG) results. Current guidelines recommend the development of clinical prediction algorithms in screening prior to PSG. A recent intuitive and user-friendly tool (OSABayes), based on a Bayesian network model using six clinical variables, has been proposed to quantify the probability of OSA. Our aims are (1) to validate OSABayes prospectively, (2) to build a smartphone app based on the proposed model, and (3) to evaluate app usability. Methods: We prospectively included adult patients suspected of OSA

Electrical nerve stimulation for sensory-neural pathway reconstruction in upper-limb amputees.

INTRODUCTION: The loss of the neural sensory function pathways between the stump limbs and the brain greatly impacts the rehabilitation of limb function and the daily lives of amputees. Non-invasive physical stressors, such as mechanical pressure and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), could be potential solutions for recovering somatic sensations in amputees. Previous studies have shown that stimulating the residual or regenerated nerves in the stumps of some amputees can produce phantom hand sensations. However, the results are inconclusive due to unstable physiological respo

Handheld Autofluorescence Imaging System for Intraoperative Parathyroid Detection.

INTRODUCTION: Hypoparathyroidism and hypocalcemia are common complications after thyroid surgery. Parathyroids may be incidentally damaged or removed because they are difficult to distinguish from surrounding tissue. Intraoperative optical technologies such as near infrared autofluorescence (NIRAF) are becoming increasingly popular to help identify parathyroids during thyroid surgery. The objective of this video is to introduce a developing NIRAF device called hANDY-i and compare the device with existing Food and Drug Administration approved technology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: hANDY-i is devel

Evidence And Mechanisms For Embolic Stroke In Contralateral Hemispheres From Carotid Artery Sources.

Disambiguation of embolus etiology in embolic strokes is often a clinical challenge. One common source of embolic stroke is the carotid arteries, with emboli originating due to plaque build up, or perioperatively during revascularization procedures. While it is commonly thought that thromboemboli from carotid sources travel to cerebral arteries ipsilaterally, there are existing reports of contralateral embolic events which complicate embolus source destination relationship for carotid sources. Here, we hypothesize that emboli from carotid sources can travel to contralateral hemispheres, and th

The interference of tinnitus on sound localization was related to the type of stimulus.

Spatial processing is a major cognitive function of hearing. Sound source localization is an intuitive evaluation of spatial hearing. Current evidence of the effect of tinnitus on sound source localization remains limited. The present study aimed to investigate whether tinnitus affects the ability to localize sound in participants with normal hearing and whether the effect is related to the type of stimulus. Overall, 40 participants with tinnitus and another 40 control participants without tinnitus were evaluated. The sound source discrimination tasks were performed on the horizontal plane. Pu

Novel evaluation of upper-limb motor performance after stroke based on normal reaching movement model.

BACKGROUND: Upper-limb rehabilitation robots provide repetitive reaching movement training to post-stroke patients. Beyond a pre-determined set of movements, a robot-aided training protocol requires optimization to account for the individuals' unique motor characteristics. Therefore, an objective evaluation method should consider the pre-stroke motor performance of the affected arm to compare one's performance relative to normalcy. However, no study has attempted to evaluate performance based on an individual's normal performance. Herein, we present a novel method for evaluating upper limb mot

Variations in Penile Cancer Management: Results From the Global Society of Rare Genitourinary Tumors Survey.

INTRODUCTION: There is paucity of evidence and consensus on various aspects of management of penile cancer (PeCa), which is intuitive considering the rarity of this disease. We present here the details of an online survey conducted by the Global Society of Rare Genito-urinary Tumors (GSRGT) with the aim of capturing the variations in PeCa care across different regions of the world. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An online questionnaire was developed by experts within the GSRGT and then circulated via email in English and Spanish versions to clinicians dealing with PeCa. Respondents were allowed 8 wee

Tuberculum sellae meningiomas: surgical outcomes in 65 patients, review of the literature and proposal for an anatomical and radiological classification.

Tuberculum sellae meningiomas (TSM) are challenging tumors due to their proximity to vital neurovascular structures. We propose a new classification system based on anatomical and radiological parameters. All patients treated for TSM, between January 2003 and December 2016, have been retrospectively reviewed. A systematic research was performed in PubMed database to review all studies comparing the performance of transcranial (TCA) and transphenoidal (ETSA) approaches. Overall, 65 patients were included in the surgical series. Gross total removal (GTR) was achieved in 55 patients (85%) and nea

We Are All in This Together-Whole of Community Pain Science Education Campaigns to Promote Better Management of Persistent Pain.

Persistent pain is a major public health issue-estimated to affect a quarter of the world's population. Public understanding of persistent pain is based on outdated biomedical models, laden with misconceptions that are contrary to best evidence. This understanding is a barrier to effective pain management. Thus, there have been calls for public health-based interventions to address these misconceptions. Previous pain-focussed public education campaigns have targeted pain beliefs and behaviours that are thought to promote recovery, such as staying active. However, prevailing pain-related miscon
