PM10 and Other Climatic Variables Are Important Predictors of Seasonal Variability of Coccidioidomycosis in Arizona.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever) is a disease caused by the fungal pathogens Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii that are endemic to the southwestern United States and parts of Mexico and South America. Throughout the range where the pathogens are endemic, there are seasonal patterns of infection rates that are associated with certain climatic variables. Previous studies that looked at annual and monthly relationships of coccidioidomycosis and climate suggest that infection numbers are linked with precipitation and temperature fluctuations; however, these analytic methods may miss

Ambient particulate matter air pollution is associated with increased risk of papillary thyroid cancer.

BACKGROUND: The association between exposure to air pollution and papillary thyroid carcinoma is unknown. We sought to estimate the relationship between long-term exposure to the fine (diameter ≤ 2.5 μm) particulate matter component of air pollution and the risk of papillary thyroid cancer. METHODS: Adult (age ≥18) patients with newly diagnosed papillary thyroid carcinoma between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2016 across a single health system were identified using electronic medical records. Data from 1,990 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma were compared with 3,980 age- and sex-ma

Influence of agricultural activities on atmospheric pollution during post-monsoon harvesting seasons at a rural location of Indo-Gangetic Plain.

The emissions from agricultural activities significantly impact the air quality at local (rural) and regional scales. The study monitored the near real-time concentrations of emission from agrarian activities, i.e., particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, PM1), traces gases and VOCs, along with meteorological parameters in a rural area of Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP). As different agricultural activities take place simultaneously in the region, sampling period was divided into three phases based on regional agricultural activities as HB (harvesting-burning) period, BTS (burning-tillage-sowing) period a

Multiscale physical background to an exceptional harmful algal bloom of Dinophysis acuta in a fjord system.

Dinophysis acuta produces diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxins and pectenotoxins (PTX). It blooms in thermally-stratified shelf waters in late summer in temperate to cold temperate latitudes. Despite its major contribution to shellfish harvesting bans, little effort has been devoted to study its population dynamics in Chilean Patagonia. In 2017-2018, mesoscale distribution of harmful algal species (75 monitoring stations) revealed the initiation (late spring) and seasonal growth of a dense D. acuta population in the Aysén region, with maximal values at Puyuhuapi Fjord (PF). Vertical phy

Diurnal variability in the spectral characteristics and sources of water-soluble brown carbon aerosols over Delhi.

It is well established that light-absorbing organic aerosols (commonly known as brown carbon, BrC) impact climate. However, uncertainties remain as their contributions to absorption at different wavelengths are often ignored in climate models. Further, BrC exhibits differences in absorption at different wavelengths due to the variable composition including varying sources and meteorological conditions. However, diurnal variability in the spectral characteristics of water-soluble BrC (hereafter BrC) is not yet reported. This study presents unique measurement hitherto lacking in the literature.

Personal exposure levels to O3, NOx and PM10 and the association to ambient levels in two Swedish cities.

Exposure to air pollution is of great concern for public health although studies on the associations between exposure estimates and personal exposure are limited and somewhat inconsistent. The aim of this study was to quantify the associations between personal nitrogen oxides (NOx), ozone (O3) and particulate matter (PM10) exposure levels and ambient levels, and the impact of climate and time spent outdoors in two cities in Sweden. Subjects (n = 65) from two Swedish cities participated in the study. The study protocol included personal exposure measurements at three occasions, or waves. Person

Short-term mortality risks of daily PM2.5-bound metals in urban region of Guangzhou, China, an indication of health risks of PM2.5 exposure.

BACKGROUND: Short-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) increases the excess risk (ER) of deaths. The metals are important constituents that are responsible for health risks of PM2.5. However, the short-term mortality risks that are associated with individual PM2.5-bound metals are not comprehensively understood. OBJECTIVE: Estimate the short-term mortality risks and corresponding thresholds of PM2.5-bound metals, with the purpose of advancing our understanding of the health risks of PM2.5 exposure, meanwhile, guiding the policy making of PM2.5 pollution prevention and early warnin

Epidemic prediction of dengue fever based on vector compartment model and Markov chain Monte Carlo method.

BACKGROUND: Dengue epidemics is affected by vector-human interactive dynamics. Infectious disease prevention and control emphasize the timing intervention at the right diffusion phase. In such a way, control measures can be cost-effective, and epidemic incidents can be controlled before devastated consequence occurs. However, timing relations between a measurable signal and the onset of the pandemic are complex to be discovered, and the typical lag period regression is difficult to capture in these complex relations. This study investigates the dynamic diffusion pattern of the disease in terms

Future scenarios of risk of Vibrio infections in a warming planet: a global mapping study.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by non-cholera Vibrio species have undergone a global expansion over the past few decades reaching new areas of the world that were previously considered adverse for these organisms. The geographical extent of the expansion has not been uniform, and some areas have shown a rapid increase in infections. METHODS: We applied a new generation of models combining climate, population, and socioeconomic projections to map future scenarios of distribution and season suitability for pathogenic Vibrio. We used the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 framework. Three da

Correcting model biases of CO in East Asia: impact on oxidant distributions during KORUS-AQ.

Global coupled chemistry-climate models underestimate carbon monoxide (CO) in the Northern Hemisphere, exhibiting a pervasive negative bias against measurements peaking in late winter and early spring. While this bias has been commonly attributed to underestimation of direct anthropogenic and biomass burning emissions, chemical production and loss via OH reaction from emissions of anthropogenic and biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play an important role. Here we investigate the reasons for this underestimation using aircraft measurements taken in May and June 2016 from the Korea-Unit

Semi-field and indoor setups to study malaria mosquito swarming behavior.

BACKGROUND: The recent resurgence of interest in sterile insect techniques to control vector mosquitoes has renewed interest in novel methods for observing mating behavior. Malarial vectors of the Anopheles gambiae complex are known to mate in swarms at specific locations at dawn and dusk. Most knowledge of mosquito swarming behavior is derived from field observations and a few experimental studies designed to assess critical parameters that affect mosquito swarming. However, such studies are difficult to implement in the field because of uncontrollable environmental factors and mosquito condi

Foreign bodies in the ear, nose, and throat in Japan: association with sociocultural and geographical conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Foreign bodies (FBs) in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) are common ENT emergencies but are sometimes life-threatening. However, FBs could be avoidable by the efficient announcement about the risk of these occurrence to the public. Fish bones are commonly found as throat FBs, and small toys are commonly found as pediatric ear and nose FBs. We hypothesized that there were relationships between the occurrence of FBs and sociocultural/geographical conditions. The purpose of this study is to clarify the risk factors of FBs in ENT regions related to eating customs and weather conditions. MET

Long-term impact of changing childhood malnutrition on rotavirus diarrhoea: Two decades of adjusted association with climate and socio-demographic factors from urban Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: There is strong association between childhood rotavirus, diarrhoea, climate factors and malnutrition. Conversely, a significant nutritional transition (reduced under-nutrition) with a concurrent increasing trend of rotavirus infection in last decade was also observed among under 5 children, especially in developing countries including Bangladesh. Considering the pathophysiology of rotavirus, there might be an interaction of this nutrition transition which plays a pivotal role in increasing rotavirus infection in addition to climate and other man-made factors in urban areas such as

Twenty-nine cases of resection of suprasellar meningioma through small bone window: an interhemispheric approach.

BACKGROUND: Under global warming, insect responses vary across regions, yet the population trends of dominant lady beetle species in central China remain poorly understood. Whether abiotic forcing (climate) or biotic interactions (prey availability) dominates their long-term population dynamics is unresolved. METHODS: We monitored lady beetle populations using black-light traps during March-November, 2015-2024, at a fixed farmland site in Luohe, Henan, China. Trap data were integrated with local meteorological records and aphid catches from a suction trap. RESULTS: A total of 21,572 individu
