Hepatopulmonary syndrome in patients with Schistosoma mansoni periportal fibrosis.

UNLABELLED: Hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is characterized by the presence of liver disease, arterial hypoxemia and intrapulmonary vascular dilatation (IPVD). IPVD includes diffused or localized dilated pulmonary capillaries and, less commonly, pleural and pulmonary arteriovenous communications. The aim of the present study was to investigate the occurrence of HPS in patients with Schistosoma mansoni periportal fibrosis in treatment at a university hospital in northeastern Brazil. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty-four patients were enrolled in the study between April and July 2007 and underwent

Signal density of left ventricular myocardial segments and impact of beam hardening artifact: implications for myocardial perfusion assessment by multidetector CT coronary angiography.

UNLABELLED: We sought to explore the normal myocardial signal density (SD) levels during multidetector computed tomography coronary angiography (MDCT-CA) acquisitions and evaluated the impact of beam hardening artifacts. BACKGROUND: Since myocardial perfusion by MDCT is based on the myocardial signal density (SD), it is pivotal to determine the normal values of myocardial SD and to identify potential mechanisms of misinterpretation of perfusion defects. In routine MDCT acquisitions, we commonly visualize a considerable SD drop at the posterobasal wall resembling perfusion defects, being attri…

Improved diagnostic performance of CT-derived FFR using 70-keV monoenergetic spectral CT in coronary artery disease.

To compare the diagnostic performance of coronary CT-derived fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) calculated from conventional polychromatic CT images with 70-keV monoenergetic reconstructions derived from spectral CT data. This retrospective study enrolled patients who underwent spectral coronary CT angiography followed by invasive FFR measurements. The CT-FFR values were computed from conventional polychromatic and 70-keV monoenergetic images. Image quality was assessed using the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Comparison of the CT-FFR with invasive FFR provided mean absolute error (MAE), Pearson

Quantitative Analysis of 3D Anatomy to Inform Planning of Ductal Arteriosus Stenting.

BACKGROUND: Ductus arteriosus stenting (DAS) is used to palliate infants with ductal-dependent pulmonary blood flow (DD-PBF), however patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) anatomy can be complex and heterogenous. AIMS: We developed custom, open-source software to model and quantify PDA anatomy. METHODS: We retrospectively identified 33 neonates with DD-PBF with a CTA before DAS. A novel custom workflow was implemented in 3D Slicer and SlicerHeart to semi-automatically extract centerlines of the course of the PDA and surrounding vessels. 3D ductal length, diameter, curvature and tortuosity were auto

The spatial location of the mandibular canal in Chinese: a CT study.

The inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) is vulnerable to injury from mandible fractures and surgical procedures so anatomical variations of IAN are important. Postoperative sensory alteration of the lip and chin region is high after mandibular orthognathic surgery. The incidence of IAN paresthesia following sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) ranges from 54% to 86% at 4-8 days, 41 to 75% at 1 month, 33 to 66% at 3 months, 17 to 58% at 6 months and 15 to 33% at 1 year postoperatively. This study determined the anatomical position of the mandibular canal in relation to cortical bone and molar teeth

The value of imaging in subclinical coronary artery disease.

Although the treatment of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) has advanced considerably, the ability to detect, predict, and prevent complications of atherosclerotic plaques, considered the main cause of ACS, remains elusive. Several imaging tools have therefore been developed to characterize morphological determinants of plaque vulnerability, defined as the propensity or probability of plaques to complicate with coronary thrombosis, able to predict patients at risk. By utilizing both intravascular and noninvasive imaging tools, indeed prospective longitudinal studies have recently provided conside
