Evaluation of patient outcome following sclerotherapy for esophageal varices.

After excluding terminally all patients, we evaluated a total of 718 patients treated with endoscopic injection sclerotherapy. They involved 350 episodes of acute hemorrhage and 368 prophylactic procedures in patients with risky varices. The 1-year cumulative survival rate was significantly lower in the acute hemorrhage group than in the prophylactic group (P < 0.05). The difference in survival between the two groups was primarily due to the number of deaths in the first 2 months after sclerotherapy (20.1% vs 0.8%, P < 0.0005). Improvements in the sclerotherapy technique significantly reduced

Phytogenic feed additive mitigates necrotic enteritis-associated gut damage and performance loss in broilers.

Necrotic enteritis (NE) remains a major challenge in broiler production following the withdrawal of antibiotic growth promoters. In response, phytogenic feed additives (PFA) have emerged as promising alternatives. This study investigated the efficacy of a phytogenic blend (PHB) containing thymol, oleic acid, capric acid, and refined sunflower fat in mitigating NE-associated compromise in performance, gut health, liveability, oxidative stress, and excreta biomarkers of intestinal inflammation in broilers. A total of 450 Cobb 500 D-old chicks were randomly allocated to three dietary groups: NC (

Persistent Lipotoxicity Overwhelms Adaptive Capacity in Human Hepatic Cell Line.

BACKGROUND: Chronic fatty acid (FA) elevation drives metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. Hepatocytes buffer transient lipid overload via coordinated adaptive mechanisms, but the temporal limits of this capacity remain undefined. OBJECTIVES: We characterized early, intermediate, and prolonged hepatocellular responses to sustained lipid excess. METHODS: HuH7 hepatocytes were exposed to an equimolar palmitic/oleic acid (PA/OA) mixture for 1, 14, or 28 d. Viability, lipid accumulation, stress-response pathways, insulin signaling, metabolic regulators, mitochondrial markers,

Maternal obesity causes fetal cardiac hypertrophy and alters adult offspring myocardial metabolism in mice.

Obesity in pregnant women causes fetal cardiac dysfunction and increases offspring cardiovascular disease risk, but its effect on myocardial metabolism is unknown. We hypothesized that maternal obesity alters fetal cardiac expression of metabolism-related genes and shifts offspring myocardial substrate preference from glucose towards lipids. Female mice were fed control or obesogenic diets before and during pregnancy. Fetal hearts were studied in late gestation (embryonic day (E) 18.5; term ≈ E21), and offspring were studied at 3, 6, 9 or 24 months postnatally. Maternal obesity increased heart

Influence of extraction method on structural, rheological, and nutritional characterization of peach palm (Bactris gasipaes) fruits pulp and peel oils.

Peach palm (Bactris gasipaes) is a promising tropical resource, yet its fruit oils remain poorly understood from both chemical and structure-function perspectives. This study investigated how the fruit fraction (pulp and peel) and the extraction protocol modulated the chemical composition, multiscale organization, and technological functionality of peach palm oils. Oils obtained from pulp and peel using conventional isooctane- and ethanol-based protocols were evaluated through an integrated chemical, thermal, structural, and rheological approach. The oils were characterized for fatty acid prof

Meta-omics profiling of the gut-lung axis illuminates metabolic networks and host-microbial interactions associated with elevated lung elastance in a murine model of obese allergic asthma.

Obesity and associated changes to the gut microbiome worsen airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness in asthma. Obesogenic host-microbial metabolomes have altered production of metabolites that may influence lung function and inflammatory responses in asthma. To understand the interplay of the gut microbiome, metabolism, and host inflammation in obesity-associated asthma, we used a multi-omics approach to profile the gut-lung axis in the setting of allergic airway disease and diet-induced obesity. We evaluated an immunomodulator, nitro-oleic acid (NO2-OA), as a host- and microbial-targeted

Deficient Chaperone-Mediated Autophagy Promotes Lipid Accumulation in Macrophage.

Chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA) serves as a critical upstream regulator of lipophagy and lipid metabolism in hepatocyte. However, the role of CMA in lipid metabolism of macrophage, the typical component of atherosclerotic plaque, remains unclear. In our study, LAMP-2A (L2A, a CMA marker) was reduced in macrophages exposed to high dose of oleate, and lipophagy was impaired in advanced atherosclerosis in ApoE (-/-) mice. Primary peritoneal macrophages isolated from macrophage-specific L2A-deficient mice exhibited pronounced intracellular lipid accumulation. Lipid regulatory enzymes, including

Differential proteomic analysis of the anti-depressive effects of oleamide in a rat chronic mild stress model of depression.

Depression is a complex psychiatric disorder, and its etiology and pathophysiology are not completely understood. Depression involves changes in many biogenic amine, neuropeptide, and oxidative systems, as well as alterations in neuroendocrine function and immune-inflammatory pathways. Oleamide is a fatty amide which exhibits pharmacological effects leading to hypnosis, sedation, and anti-anxiety effects. In the present study, the chronic mild stress (CMS) model was used to investigate the antidepressant-like activity of oleamide. Rats were exposed to 10weeks of CMS or control conditions and w

The long chain fatty acid oleate activates mouse intestinal afferent nerves in vitro.

Vagal afferents innervating the gastrointestinal tract serve an important nutrient-sensing function, and these signals contribute to satiety. Detection of nutrients occurs largely through the release of mediators from specialized enteroendocrine cells within the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract. The signaling pathways leading to vagal afferent activation are not clear; however, previous in-vivo studies have implicated a role for cholecystokinin (CCK). We used an in vitro intestinal afferent extracellular recording preparation to study the effect of luminal perfusion of the long chain fatty
