Self-injurious behavior in young boys with fragile X syndrome.

In this study, we distributed surveys to 67 families of young boys with fragile X syndrome to determine the prevalence, onset, form, functio … demands or changes in routine. Significant group differences were found between overall ratings of problem behavior for boys with self-injury compared to those without self-injury. Groups did not differ on measures of fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP), autism status, adaptive behavior, or age first medicated. Results are discussed in terms of future res …

Aggressive behavior of children exposed to intimate partner violence: an examination of maternal mental health, maternal warmth and child maltreatment.

OBJECTIVES: Over 4.5 million children each year are exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV). Furthermore, IPV rarely occurs without other forms of violence and aggression in the home. IPV is associated with mental health and parenting problems in mothers, and children experience a wide variety of short-term social adjustment and emotional difficulties, including behavioral problems. The current study investigated the influence of IPV exposure on children's aggressive behavior, and tested if this relation was mediated by poor maternal mental health, and, in turn, by maternal warmth and child

Gambling behavior among adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Impulsivity is inherent to both problem gambling and ADHD. The purpose of this study is to examine ADHD key symptoms, and gambling behaviors and problem severity among adolescents. Additionally, internalizing and externalizing behaviors exhibited among these individuals and the role of these symptoms in gambling are examined. We used a cross-sectional study design and survey 1,130 adolescents aged 12-19. Results indicated that adolescents who screened positive for ADHD were significantly more likely than non-ADHD adolescents to engage in gambling and significantly more likely to develop gambli

Sleep disorders in children beginning school: their causes and effects.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders are a common problem among children beginning school and may be associated both with impaired school performance and with behavioral difficulties. Because these disorders manifest themselves highly variably among children of any given age, and even in an individual affected child, they need an appropriate diagnostic evaluation so that the many environmental and background factors that may be relevant to the further course of the problem can be assessed. METHODS: Extensive data were obtained on approximately 1400 children who were tested before beginning school in 2

Associations among child maltreatment, non-suicidal self-injury and internet addiction in adolescents: Longitudinal mediation of symptoms of complex posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUNDS: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and internet addiction are behavioral problems influenced by environmental factors, with child maltreatment emerging as an important risk factor. Complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is closely associated with child maltreatment. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the longitudinal associations among child maltreatment, NSSI and internet addiction, focusing on the mediating role of CPTSD symptoms. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This study collected three-wave data from 454 Chinese adolescents with a six-month interval. Child maltreatment wa

Behavioral Addiction from the Asian Americans Perspective: Exploration of Public and Help-Seeking Stigma.

Asian Americans have been unlikely to seek mental health services despite their needs for treatment, particularly when experiencing significant gambling or Internet gaming problems. Stigma is often considered to be a barrier to seeking help. To understand how stigma impacts Asian Americans' willingness to seek mental health services, the present study used an online survey to investigate the public stigma associated with addictive behaviors and help-seeking stigma among Asian Americans. Participants (N = 431) who self-identified as Asian American, reside in the US. Using a between-groups vigne

Behavioral profiling in children and adolescents with Malan syndrome.

Malan syndrome (MALNS) is an ultra-rare genetic disorder caused by heterozygous chromosomal microdeletions involving the 19p13.2 region or loss-of-function variants in the NFIX gene. It is characterized by specific phenotypical features, intellectual disability (ID), and limitations in adaptive functioning and behavioral problems. In a previous work, we defined the cognitive, adaptive, linguistic and visuomotor ability profiles in a group of 15 MALNS individuals, providing quantitative data from standardized evaluations. Here, we further extend the characterization of MALNS by analyzing the be

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for management of mental health and stress-related disorders: Recent advances in techniques and technologies.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) helps individuals to eliminate avoidant and safety-seeking behaviors that prevent self-correction of faulty beliefs, thereby facilitating stress management to reduce stress-related disorders and enhance mental health. The present review evaluated the effectiveness of CBT in stressful conditions among clinical and general populations, and identified recent advances in CBT-related techniques. A search of the literature for studies conducted during 1987-2021 identified 345 articles relating to biopsychosocial medicine; 154 (45%) were review articles, including 1

ADHD-like behavior in a patient with hypothalamic hamartoma.

We report a male patient with hypothalamic hamartoma (HH) who manifested central precocious puberty (CPP) at 4 years of age. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogue treatment was started at 6 years of age and his pubertal signs were suppressed. At 9 years of age, the patient was emotionally unstable, aggressive, and antisocial. He had severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-like behavior and conduct disorder. No seizure activity was observed. GnRH analogue treatment was discontinued for 8 months from 9 years and 4 months of age due to his mother's illness. During this per

The dysregulation profile in young children: empirically defined classes in the Generation R study.

OBJECTIVE: Children with co-occurring internalizing and externalizing problems have higher levels of impairment and worse outcomes later in life, but it is unclear whether these children can be distinguished validly from children who have problems in a single domain. We used a person-centered statistical approach to examine whether a group of children with co-occurring internalizing and externalizing problems can be identified in a general-population sample of young children. METHOD: This study included a population-based sample of 6,131 children, aged 5 through 7 years. Mothers (92.6%) repor

Pathomechanisms of behavioral abnormalities in Huntington disease: an update.

Huntington disease (HD), a devastating autosomal-dominant neurodegenerative disease caused by an expanded CAG trinucleotide repeat, is clinically characterized by a triad of symptoms including involuntary motions, behavior problems and cognitive deficits. Behavioral symptoms with anxiety, irritability, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, apathy and other neuropsychiatric symptoms, occurring in over 50% of HD patients are important features of this disease and contribute to impairment of quality of life, but their pathophysiology is poorly understood. Behavior problems, more frequent than depressio

Habitual snoring, intermittent hypoxia, and impaired behavior in primary school children.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep-disordered breathing is associated with impaired behavior and poor academic performance in children. We aimed to determine the extent of behavioral problems in snoring children, clarify the role of intermittent hypoxia, and test the reversibility of impaired behavior and poor academic performance. METHODS: In 1144 children, habitual snoring (HS; snoring frequently or always) and impaired behavior were assessed using parental questionnaires. Intermittent hypoxia (ie, presence of > or =5 arterial oxygen desaturations by > or =4% or > or =1 desaturation to < or =90%) was invest

The Dino Study: Rationale and protocol for a randomized controlled trial of the Incredible Years Dinosaur Program with daily assessments.

BACKGROUND: Children with conduct problems vary considerably in how they respond to behavioral interventions. Although group-based, child-focused programs are increasingly implemented, research still relies on retrospective parent or teacher reports and group-level outcomes. These traditional approaches often obscure individual differences in treatment response and reduce the potential for individualized behavioral support tailored to each child's unique profile. Associations of phthalates exposure with attention deficits hyperactivity disorder: A case-control study among Chinese children.

Researches on associations between phthalates exposure and child attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are inconsistent. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of urinary phthalates with ADHD, co-occurring oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), related symptoms and behavior problems among Chinese children. We enrolled 225 ADHD cases and 225 healthy controls aged 6-13 years old in Liuzhou, China. Each child provided repeated urine samples at 4 visits. Eight phthalate metabolites were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. Child ADHD sympt
