Inhibitory effects of cell-free supernatant of Bifidobacterium bifidum on biofilm formation and virulence gene expression in Group B Streptococcus clinical isolates.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a major cause of maternal and neonatal infections, complicated by increasing antimicrobial resistance and high virulence. In this study, from 235 vaginal swabs, 45 GBS isolates were identified and screened; 12 representative isolates (strong biofilm producers with the complete virulence gene profile) were selected for downstream analyses. Molecular analysis showed high prevalence of virulence genes (fbsA 95.5%, lmb 91.1%, pavA 88.8%, fbsB 86.6%) and biofilm-related genes (pil-1 88.8%, pil-2a 91.1%, pil-2b 84.4%). Subsequently, a Bifidobacterium bifidum (designate

Group B Streptococcus colonization in pregnant women and vertical transmission to neonates in Crete Greece: Incidence and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection remains a significant cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Universal screening using rectovaginal swabs and intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis for GBS-positive women is a standard practice to prevent early-onset neonatal disease. Colonization rates vary internationally, and comprehensive data from Greece are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of GBS colonization and associated risk factors among pregnant women in Crete, Greece. METHODS: This retrospective study included all pregnant women and their newborns adm

Amniotic fluid interleukin 6 and interleukin 8 are superior predictors of fetal lung injury compared with maternal or fetal plasma cytokines or placental histopathology in a nonhuman primate model.

BACKGROUND: Intra-amniotic infection or inflammation is common in early preterm birth and associated with substantial neonatal lung morbidity owing to fetal exposure to proinflammatory cytokines and infectious organisms. Amniotic fluid interleukin 8, a proinflammatory cytokine, was previously correlated with the development of neonatal bronchopulmonary dysplasia, but whether amniotic fluid cytokines or placental pathology more accurately predicts neonatal lung pathology and morbidity is unknown. We have used a pregnant nonhuman primate model of group B Streptococcus infection to study the path
