Root Canal Filling after Revascularization/Revitalization.

INTRODUCTION: Revascularization/revitalization therapy is considered an alternative procedure for management of teeth with an immature apex and necrotic pulp, mainly when root development is interrupted in the early phases of formation. However, this clinical treatment protocol should be considered a permanent procedure? METHOD: A maxillary central incisor with a previous and successful RR treatment was intentionally filled with a biocompatible material with the periapical tissues due to the patient's lack of adherence to the follow-up protocol. RESULTS: The 20-month follow-up showed absence

Planning the content of a brief educational course in maxillofacial emergencies for staff in accident and emergency departments: a modified Delphi study.

It is well known that staff in accident and emergency (A&E) departments lack the knowledge and confidence needed to deal with maxillofacial emergencies, and that it is related to limited education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We therefore aimed to design a syllabus for a short course to educate staff about the most common emergencies. To find out which learning outcomes should be included and to reach a consensus, we did a 3-stage modified Delphi study of the opinions of members of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS). Of a possible 890 members, 188 r

Increased expression of EphA7 in inflamed human dental pulp.

INTRODUCTION: Pulpitis has been associated with abundant inflammatory cells, dilated blood vessels, and thickening nerve fibers histopathologically with or without severe pain clinically. On the basis of EphA7 receptor expression in inflammatory cells, the developing mouse dental pulp, and trigeminal nerve system, EphA7 may possibly be involved in local inflammatory response and sensory innervation of adult dental pulp as well as odontogenic pain conducted through the trigeminal system. The purpose of the study was to analyze the expression of EphA7 gene in healthy and inflamed human dental pu

Multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of extensive external cervical resorption after dental trauma.

External cervical resorption (ECR) is a sequela of dentoalveolar trauma that may cause functional, esthetic, and psychologic alterations. The aim of this study was to report a successful multidisciplinary treatment approach performed in a 12-year-old patient who presented with posttraumatic ECR associated with extensive opened cavity, pulp necrosis, and periapical lesion of tooth number 9, with an initial unfavorable prognosis. Crown lengthening was done to enable restoration of vestibular surface with resin composite, forming a barrier that allowed endodontic treatment. Afterwards, a prefabri

Incisor trauma and early treatment for Class II Division 1 malocclusion.

This study investigated incisor trauma in children with overjets greater than or equal to 7 mm who were enrolled in a clinical trial of 2-phase early orthodontic treatment for Class II malocclusion. In phase 1, children were randomly assigned to treatment in the mixed dentition with either modified bionator or combination headgear or to a group in which treatment was delayed until the permanent dentition. All children received comprehensive treatment during phase 2 if necessary. At the start of the trial, 29.1% of the patients had already had some incisor trauma. This was not significantly rel

Phenotype presentation of hypophosphatemic rickets in adults.

Hypophosphatemic rickets (HR) is a group of rare disorders caused by excessive renal phosphate wasting. The purpose of this cross-sectional study of 38 HR patients was to characterize the phenotype of adult HR patients. Moreover, skeletal and endodontic severity scores were defined to assess possible gender differences in disease severity in patients with genetically verified X-linked HR. Compared to normal reference data, i.e., z = 0, HR patients had significantly lower final height, with a mean difference in z-score of -1.9 (95% CI -2.4 to -1.4, P < 0.001). Compared to paired z-scores of fin

Classifying degenerative joint disease by the RDC/TMD and by panoramic imaging: a retrospective analysis.

The purposes of the study were to evaluate the utility of diagnosing degenerative joint disease (DJD) by the clinical finding of coarse crepitus alone, without supporting imaging studies, as defined by the RDC/TMD, and to evaluate the contribution of panoramic radiography as an aid in the diagnosis of DJD. A retrospective analysis of 372 consecutive patients with TMD was conducted. Their panoramic radiographs were evaluated for the extent of their contribution to the final diagnosis. Panoramic radiography was of no diagnostic value in 94.4% of the cases when the group was considered as a whole

Staging of osteonecrosis of the jaw requires computed tomography for accurate definition of the extent of bony disease.

Management of osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with antiresorptive agents is challenging, and outcomes are unpredictable. The severity of disease is the main guide to management, and can help to predict prognosis. Most available staging systems for osteonecrosis, including the widely-used American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) system, classify severity on the basis of clinical and radiographic findings. However, clinical inspection and radiography are limited in their ability to identify the extent of necrotic bone disease compared with computed tomography (CT). We
