Glutamatergic vestibular neurons express Fos after vestibular stimulation and project to the NTS and the PBN in rats.

In this study, retrograde tracing method combined with phosphate-activated glutaminase (PAG) and Fos immunofluorescence histochemistry was used to identify glutamatergic vestibular nucleus (VN) neurons receiving vestibular inputs and projecting to the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and the parabrachial nucleus (PBN). Conscious animals were subjected to 120 min Ferris-wheel like rotation stimulation. Neuronal activation was assessed by Fos expression in the nucleus of VN neurons. After Fluoro-gold (FG) injection into the caudal NTS, approximately 48% FG-labeled VN neurons were immunoreacti

Schema-based learning of adaptable and flexible prey-catching in anurans I. The basic architecture.

A motor action often involves the coordination of several motor synergies and requires flexible adjustment of the ongoing execution based on feedback signals. To elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying the construction and selection of motor synergies, we study prey-capture in anurans. Experimental data demonstrate the intricate interaction between different motor synergies, including the interplay of their afferent feedback signals (Weerasuriya 1991; Anderson and Nishikawa 1996). Such data provide insights for the general issues concerning two-way information flow between sensory centers,

Truncal and hepatic vagotomy reduce suppression of feeding by jejunal lipid infusions.

Two experiments investigated mechanisms underlying the decrease in food intake produced by lipid infusions into the jejunum. In Experiment 1, male Sprague-Dawley rats with truncal abdominal vagotomy (TVx), selective hepatic-branch vagotomy (HVx), or sham vagotomy received repeated 7 h infusions of linoleic acid (LA), corn oil (CO), or saline through indwelling jejunal catheters. Cumulative food intake was measured at 1, 3, 6, and 23 h. LA and, to a lesser extent, CO suppressed food intake in excess of the caloric value of the load. This effect was eliminated by TVx, which significantly attenua

Effects of glossopharyngeal nerve transection on central and peripheral cytokines and serum corticosterone induced by localized inflammation.

Bilateral transection of the glossopharyngeal nerves (GLOx) disrupts the immune-to-brain communication from the posterior oral cavity. The current report tested whether this effect is due to the afferent (sensory) or efferent (parasympathetic motor) components of the nerve. Injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) into the soft palate (ISP) of GLOx or sham-operated (SHAM) rats increased the circulating levels of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) and corticosterone (CORT), as well the hypothalamic content of IL-1beta; no difference in circulating levels and h

Afferent innervation of outer and inner hair cells is normal in neonatally de-efferented cats.

It has been hypothesized that normal pruning of exuberant branching of afferent neurons in the developing cochlea is caused by the arrival of the olivocochlear efferent neurons and the resulting competition for synaptic sites on hair cells. This hypothesis was supported by a report that afferent innervation density on mature outer hair cells (OHCs) is elevated in animals deefferented at birth, before the olivocochlear system reaches the outer hair cell area (Pujol and Carlier [1982] Dev. Brain Res. 3:151-154). In the current study, this claim was evaluated quantitatively at the electron micros

Robust suppression of afferent-induced excitation in the rat spinal dorsal horn after conditioning low-frequency stimulation.

The neuronal plasticity in the spinal dorsal horn induced after conditioning low-frequency stimulation of afferent A fibers, and its relationship with spinal inhibitory networks, was investigated with an optical-imaging method that detects neuronal excitation. High-intensity single-pulse stimulation of the dorsal root activating both A and C fibers evoked an optical response in the dorsal horn in transverse slices of 12- to 25-day-old rat spinal cords stained with a voltage-sensitive dye, RH-482. The optical response, reflecting the net excitation of neuronal elements along the thickness of ea

Trigeminal afferents and brainstem centers involved in the occurrence of cerebral vasospasm.

Cisternal injections of blood in the rat and squirrel monkey produce an angiographically demonstrable biphasic vasospasm with a maximal late spasm at two days in the rat and six days post-subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in the monkey. The SAH induces a decrease in cerebral blood flow of about 25% and a corresponding increase in glucose uptake of between 30% and 50%. In about half of the animals low-flow areas were noted in the cortex and the basal ganglia with a corresponding marked increase in glucose uptake. Lesioning of the A2-nucleus, its ascending pathway or the median eminence prevents the

Orienting-like reaction after ibotenic acid injections into the thalamic centre median nucleus in the cat.

The excitotoxin ibotenic acid was injected bilaterally into the intralaminar centre median nucleus of chronically implanted cats in order to study the effects of early excitation of centre median population on electrographic correlates of behavioral states and to compare them to those induced by injection into intralaminar centralis lateralis nucleus, previously shown. Immediately and during the first 24h after injection, highly aroused behavior with electrocortical activation, myoclonic jerks, enhancement of ocular movements and ponto-geniculo-occipital waves were observed. Surprisingly, in c

Sensory neuropathy in hereditary spastic paraplegia.

A large kinship is reported with dominantly inherited spastic paraplegia starting in the first decade of life; its clinical evolution was indistinguishable from that of "pure" hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). However, all patients studied had electrophysiological evidence of a predominantly sensory polyneuropathy, which was confirmed on nerve biopsy in three. The histological findings indicated virtually complete loss of large diameter fibres with relative preservation of small myelinated and non-myelinated fibres. The neuropathy was largely asymptomatic and there were no trophic ulcers. T

Differential expression of c-fos and c-jun in two regions of the rat spinal cord following noxious colorectal distention.

Thoracolumbar and lumbosacral spinal segments that receive afferent input from the descending colon and rectum were stained immunocytochemically for c-Fos- and c-Jun-like proteins following repetitive, noxious colorectal distention (CRD). Noxious CRD (80 mmHg) resulted in significantly more c-Fos- and c-Jun-like immunoreactivity in the sacral dorsal horn than in the thoracic dorsal horn. In both regions of the spinal cord the increase in c-Fos-like immunoreactivity was at least twice that of c-Jun-like immunoreactivity. Basal levels of c-Jun but not c-Fos were observed in the thoracic intermed

Is phantom tooth pain a deafferentation (neuropathic) syndrome? Part II: Psychosocial considerations.

The symptoms of phantom tooth pain are often considered to be of psychological origin by those unfamiliar with its clinical characteristics. Part of the problem is that phantom tooth pain is often confused with atypical facial pain. Extensive literature exists for the latter that suggests a psychological cause. Many studies of atypical facial pain, however, suffer from one or more of four methodologic problems. In the present study, 115 phantom tooth pain cases are compared with a contrast group of 151 facial pain cases and 137 nonpain controls on a variety of personality characteristics. Only

Vasoactive intestinal peptide and neuropeptide Y coexist in non-noradrenergic sympathetic neurons to guinea pig trachea.

Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) has been suggested to be a mediator of vagal inhibition of airway tone and it has been assumed that VIP-containing nerve fibres in the airway arise from intrinsic ganglia. We have used a combination of double- and triple-labelling immunohistochemistry, retrograde axonal tracing, organotypic culture and nerve lesion studies, to identify the origin and distribution of neurons containing immunoreactivity (IR) to VIP in guinea pig airway smooth muscle. We also investigated whether immunoreactivity to other neuropeptides coexisted with VIP-IR within these neurons

The duration of neurotrophic factor independence in early sensory neurons is matched to the time course of target field innervation.

To investigate how the onset of neurotrophic factor dependence in neurons is coordinated with the arrival of their axons in the target field, we have studied the survival of four populations of cranial sensory neurons whose axons reach their common central target field, the hindbrain, at different times. We show that neurons whose axons reach the hindbrain first survive for a short time in culture before responding to brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Neurons whose axons reach the hindbrain later survive longer before responding to BDNF. These differences in survival, which arise prior

Alpha-1-adrenergic receptors in the nucleus tractus solitarii region of rats with experimental and genetic hypertension.

The binding of the alpha 1-adrenergic receptors antagonist, 125I-HEAT, to membranes of nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) regions of the brains of neurogenic hypertensive, spontaneously hypertensive (SH), and deoxycorticosterone (DOCA)/salt hypertensive rats and their respective controls was studied to quantitate the expression of alpha 1-adrenergic receptors. Scatchard analysis of the binding studies revealed a 1.8-fold increase in the Bmax of alpha 1-adrenergic receptors in NTS region membranes of SH rats when compared to their Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) control without significant difference in the Kd

[Origin of component N16 in short latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) to median nerve stimulation--correlation between component N16 and thalamus].

Short latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) to median nerve stimulation consists of four main subcortical components, namely P 9, P 11, P 13 and N 16 which appears before cortial N 18. However, the origin of component N 16 is a subject of controversy. In an attempt to learn about the generator source(s) of component N 16, SSEP was recorded from 25 patients with various focal lesions of the brain stem and/or thalamus, and abnormalities of the each potential was correlated to the clinically and radiologically defined site of the lesions. Furthermore, the effects of the different frequen

Depression of nociceptive sensory activity in the rat spinal cord due to the intrathecal administration of drugs: effect of diazepam.

The intrathecal (i.t.) administration of morphine inhibits nociceptive motor responses and activity in ascending axons evoked by stimulation of nociceptive afferent nerve fibers (nociceptive sensory response) in the rat. The i.t. administration of cholecystokinin octapeptide and ceruletide inhibits nociceptive motor responses, but does not affect ascending nociceptive activity. This shows that drug-induced depression of nociceptive motor responses is not always associated with depression of the nociceptive sensory response of the spinal cord. The microiontophoretic application of substance P e

Anatomy of the gustatory system in the hamster: central projections of the chorda tympani and the lingual nerve.

The sensory modalities of taste and touch, for the anterior tongue, are relegated to separate cranial nerves. The lingual branch of the trigeminal nerve mediates touch: the chorda tympani branch of the facial nerve mediates taste. The chorda tympani also contains efferent axons which originate in the superior salivatory nucleus. The central projections of these two nerves have been visualized in the hamster by anterograde labelling with horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Afferent fibers of the chorda tympani distribute to all rostral-caudal levels of the solitary nucleus. They synapse heavily in th

Deep brain stimulation in mesencephalic lemniscus medialis for chronic pain.

Stereotactic deep brain stimulation (DBS) with chronically implanted special devices intermittently activated by the patient himself has led to a new concept in the treatment of chronic central pain, such as the thalamic pain syndrome, herpes-zoster neuralgia, anaesthesia dolorosa, radicular and plexus lacerations, stump pain with and without causalgia and cancer pain. Our results in 32 cases (March 31, 1979) with lemniscus medialis stimulation, including the specific and nonspecific somatosensory nuclei or periaqueductal gray matter show in 53% of our cases, a reduction of pain of over 50%. Identification of MSH release-inhibiting elements in the neurointermediate lobe of the rat.

Neurointermediate lobes of rats comprise elements which, when excited in vitro, bring about an inhibition of the release of melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH). Superfusion of neurointermediate lobes of intact donor rats with medium containing 45 mM K+ induced a stimulation of the release of oxytocin, arginine-vasopressin and dopamine (DA) and inhibited the release of MSH. Fluorescence histochemical observations and the results of release studies indicate that electrothermic lesions in the mediobasal hypothalamus induced a more rapid degeneration of dopaminergic than of peptidergic terminals
