9 alpha-Fluorocortisol (9 alpha FF) is about 200 times more potent as a mineralocorticoid than cortisol (F) in man, although it binds with the same affinity as F and aldosterone to the human mineralocorticoid receptor. The low mineralocorticoid activity of F has been shown to be due to its rapid conversion by the kidney to cortisone (E), which does not bind to the receptor. The case history of a 40 year old male with septical temperatures and ascites is presented. Because of skin-pigmentation, hypotension, low rate of electrolytes, augmented renin-activity, and septical temperatures there was a suspicion of Addison's disease. A protein-rich ascites without tumor cells and erythrocytes, but with lymphocytes gives the diagnosis of peritonitis tuberculosa. Addison's disease and peritonitis tuberculosa are late manifestations of an organ tuberculosis, about 20 years after pulmonal tuberculosis.

Seven cases of adhesive arachnoiditis of the optochiasmatic cistern, verified surgically, with a history of head injury are presented. Neuroophthalmologic findings consisted of impairment of visual acuity and funduscopic atrophy rather than papilledema. The visual fields showed a damage of the periaxial rather than the axial type. Neuroradiologic examinations did not consistently give the findings considered classical of optochiasmatic arachnoiditis. Mice made T cell-deficient as adults by thymectomy and lethal irradiation, and infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, showed a greatly reduced capacity to develop nonspecific resistance to challenge with a heterologous bacterium.
