BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Amebic liver abscess is an emerging parasitic disease in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. Clinical characteristics of this disease have rarely been compared between patients with and without HIV infection.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 24 patients who had been diagnosed with amebic liver abscess during a 17-year period. The demographics, clinical manifestations, radiographic findings, and outcomes were compared between HIV-infected and non-HIV-infected patients.
RESULTS: Among 24 patients with amebic abscess, 8 were HIV-infected and 1

Granulomatous amebic encephalitis due to Acanthamoeba spp. usually occurs in chronically ill and debilitated individuals. Some of these patients may have received immunosuppressive therapy. Another infection due to Acanthamoeba spp. has been corneal ulcerations which usually occur after minimal trauma to the corneal epithelium (1). In contrast, primary amebic meningoencephalitis due to Naegleria fowleri usually occurs in healthy, young individuals with a history of swimming in heated swimming pools, in manmade lakes or with recent contact with contaminated water and practising water-related sp

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic intestinal protozoa exhibit a global distribution and are significant causes of diarrhea, estimated to affect approxi … st traditional microscopy for identifying infections with Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium spp., Entamoeba histolytica and Dientamoeba fragilis.
RESULTS: The study analysed 355 stool samples, of which 230 samples were freshly collected and 125 had been stored in preservation media. The data from our analyses show complete agreement between the AusDiagno …

Amoebic liver abscess is a serious but curable hepatic illness predominantly seen in tropical countries. We describe our experience of clinical presentation, laboratory parameters, radiological findings and treatment strategies. This is a retrospective analysis of 114 patients who were admitted from January 2012 to September 2014 at our centre. The mean age of presentation was 41.7 ± 13.9 years, the majority of patients were male (86.8%) with chronic alcoholism (63.2%). Most of the patients had a solitary right lobe liver abscess. Abdominal pain, fever, tachycardia and hepatomegaly were the mo

Amoebiasis, a common parasitic infection in the tropics is most commonly associated with solitary liver abscess. Multiple hepatic, splenic and renal abscesses are a very rare presentation of extraintestinal amoebiasis in children. The authors report a 6-y-old girl who presented with a febrile illness, hepatosplenomegaly and erythema nodosum and was diagnosed to have multiple amoebic abscesses by imaging and aspiration cytology of a liver abscess. This is also the first case report of the association of erythema nodosum with extraintestinal amoebiasis in children.

In order to evaluate the principal characteristics of the intestinal amoebiasis in the north of Tunisia, one retrospective study review all cases diagnosed in principal gastroenterologic sections of the hospitals of Tunis. Twenty height cases of intestinal amoebiasis, 10 of which have an inflammatory bowel disease associated were included. Watery stools containing blood and mucus were the most important symptoms (25 cases). The endoscopic exam showed for all the cases non specific lesions. The diagnosis was based on histologic exam in 21 cases, on the positivity of serologic tests in 3 cases a

Fifty serum samples from patients with amoebic liver abscess and 50 from subjects who had not suffered from the disease (25 from patients with other, chiefly parasitic, infections and 25 from healthy blood donors, staff or students) were tested for circulating amoebic antigen by counter-current immuno-electrophoresis (CIEP). Amoebic antigen was detected in 38 sera (76%) from cases of amoebic liver abscess, but in none of the other sera. Although CIEP is only moderately sensitive, the high specificity suggests that this simple test may be useful in the diagnosis of amoebic liver abscess.

BACKGROUND: Chronic abdominal pain and frequent bowel disturbance are common symptoms experienced by more than 15% of apparently healthy people. In areas endemic for Entamoeba histolytica infection, these symptoms are often diagnosed as non-dysenteric intestinal amoebiasis even though no causal relation between such symptoms and E histolytica has been established and clinical presentation of non-dysenteric intestinal amoebiasis and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is not distinct. This study was done to assess the clinical significance of E histolytica infection in causation of such symptoms.
