BACKGROUND: Most patients with contact allergy to Asteraceae plants are patch test positive to sesquiterpene lactone mix (SLM). There are several reports among these patients of a flare-up of hand eczema after ingestion of food and beverages originating from Asteraceae plants.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the medical and occupational outcome in 1048 patients diagnosed with OSD at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and to identify the prognostic risk factors for the continuation of OSD.

The ulcerative variant of lichen planus (LP) commonly involves the oral mucosa but is uncommon and difficult to treat when located on other areas. We describe an unusual case of ulcerative LP involving several surfaces, including the palms and scrotum, in a 50-year-old man with hepatitis C. The patient was recalcitrant to treatment with conventional therapy but obtained clearance with a sustained response using low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). This treatment is an option for patients with LP who are not ideal candidates for standard therapy.

A retrospective survey was carried out on the epidemiological monitoring of the isolation incidence of Mycobacterium marinum in 21 laboratories, in an attempt to gain an insight into the frequency of its isolation in Spain. From 1990 to 1992 the allergy profile of 1042 prospective hairdressers (personal and family history, atopic skin, serum IgE, patch and prick tests) was determined and their occupational suitability was evaluated. BACKGROUND: Hand eczema (HE) is a chronic multifactorial dermatosis with the presence of endogenous and exogenous factors in its pathogenesis. The etiologic diagnosis of hand eczema is often difficult.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were (1) to detect clinical history and clinical examination data capable of differentiating HE types; (2) to determine the importance of patch tests for the etiologic diagnosis of HE; and (3) on the basis of the definitive diagnosis of HE type with the aid of patch tests, to obtain relevant data for appropriate patient guidance for the control of HE.

839 patients were patch tested with a series of 31 plastics and glues allergens at a dermatologic clinic over a period of 7 years. 52 (6%) had a positive patch test reaction to 1 or more such allergens.
