Cat faeces can contain pathogens of zoonoses (viroses, bacterioses and protozooses) and stages of parasites (e.g. helminths) which can be spread potentially by Diptera. In reference to this: Remarks on the cat faeces. Spots of defecation of cats in different biotopes of the open land and in buildings. Conditions for the visit of Diptera to cat faeces. List of the 187 species of Diptera of 27 families discovered on cat faeces. Relation of the number of species being vectors found on faeces of cats to the entire number of species found on faeces produced by different carnivorous, omnivorous and

Evidence for the presence of 11 intestinal parasites in pre-school children from 4 rural villages in Ghana was obtained from an examination of stool samples. Striking differences were detected between the prevalence of some of the 6 common infections in the 4 villages. The prevalence of Ascaris lumbricoides varied from about 76% in one village (Oshiyie, coastal savanna) to apparently 0% in another (Akuma, forest zone). No differences in prevalence for any infection were observed to be sex dependent. Investigation of the relationship between age of the children and prevalence showed that the de

Infestations with helminths of non-European travellers--results of stool examinations 1973-1981 in the region of Leipzig (GDR). In the years 1973-1981 6,530 foreigners from 98 non-European nations were examined helminthologically by means of 15,288 koproovoscopic samples of stool. Altogether 52% of the examined persons were found to be infected with helminths. 15 species or groups of species were found. 38% of the examined persons were infested with Trichuris trichiura, 21% with "Ancylostomatidae" and 17% with Ascaris lumbricoides. Travellers from South and Southeast Asia showed the highest ra

A parasitology survey was conducted in five villages in North Sumatra, Indonesia. A total of 3,207 blood smears, 2,066 stool specimens and 969 sera were examined. Sixty (1.9%) inhabitants had malaria (Plasmodium vivax 41, P. falciparum 19), and 20 had Brugia malayi microfilaraemia. The most common intestinal helminths were Trichuris trichiura (87%), Ascaris lumbricoides (75%) and hookworm (58%). Other helminths found in low numbers were Enterobius vermicularis, Strongyloides stercoralis, Taenia sp., Fasciolid, Dicrocoeliid and Echinostoma sp. eggs. Entamoeba coli (25%) was the most common inte

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections and undernutrition create a combined health burden in children, especially in areas affected by long-lasting humanitarian crises. This study assessed the prevalence, types, magnitude of association and modifiable behavioral risks associated with intestinal parasitic infection in undernourished preschool children in Taiz, Yemen.
METHODS: A hospital-based analytical cross-sectional study was carried out from January 2025 to January 2026. The study involved 1,200 undernourished children aged 6 to 59 months who received care from general public hospital

BACKGROUND: The immune response of people living with HIV (PLHIV) coinfected with intestinal and/or blood helminths is still understudied in Gabon. The aim of this study was to compare IgE levels between HIV-positive and HIV-negative people depending on parasite carriage.
METHODS: Samples from PLHIV and HIV-negative individuals, carriers or not of intestinal parasites and/or microfilariae and/or Plasmodium falciparum, were used as the study materials. The total IgE assay was performed using the VIDAS PC.
RESULTS: Samples from 152 participants were included in the study, 91 HIV-positive and 6

INTRODUCTION: Urban vegetable farmers in Ghana face multiple health risks, including soil-transmitted helminths (STHs), which may contribute to morbidities that threaten urban food security. Additionally, infected farmers may act as persistent sources of disease transmission within urban populations. There is the need to assess the burden of STH among these farmers using more sensitive molecular assays.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study involving 168 urban farmers from Accra and Tamale in Ghana's Greater Accra and Northern regions, respectively. Participants completed semi-structured

INTRODUCTION: In Ghana, schistosomiasis (SCH) and soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infections are of major public health problems in children. In the last decades, various interventions have been instituted by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in collaboration with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for the control and subsequent elimination of SCH and STH. However, these infections still remain common in both adults and children in many districts in Ghana. This study aimed to identify challenges in achieving sustainable coverage of mass drug administration for the control of STH and SCH and t

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and mutualistic gut microbes coexist in the gastrointestinal tract. However, limited data exist regarding how STH infections are associated with gut microbiome profiles.
METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data collected in a longitudinal study to identify and explain differences in microbial communities between STH-infected and non-infected Ethiopian school children. We collected 138 stool samples and analyzed them for STH infection using standard direct wet mount and Kato Katz methods. The gut microbiome profiles were cha

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is currently thought to arise by interactions between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. Infections in general trigger autoimmune responses causing clinical manifestations of disease. However, as a result of regulatory T (Treg)- and regulatory B (Breg)-cell induction, helminth infections tend to dampen disease activity. IL-35, the newest member of the IL-12 family, is an inhibitory cytokine composed of an EBI3β chain subunit, and an IL-12p35 subunit. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of IL-35 during parasite infections occurring in individ

BACKGROUNDS: The incidence of angiostrongyliasis is increasing in recent decades due to the expanding endemic areas all over the world. Clinicians face tremendous challenge of diagnosing angiostrongyliasis because of the lack of awareness of the disease and less effective definitive laboratory tests.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old man initially manifested skin itching, emesis, myalgia and quadriparesis. With progressive weakness of four limbs and elevated protein in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), he was diagnosed as Guillain-Barré syndrome and treated with intravenous methylprednisolone and

School health and nutrition (SHN) programmes are recognized as a significant contributor to both health and education sector goals. The school system offers an ideal platform from which to deliver basic health interventions that target the most common health conditions affecting school-age children (SAC) in low-income countries, leading to improved participation and learning outcomes. However, governments require evidence to cost, design, and implement these programmes. In Ethiopia, prevalent health conditions affecting SAC's education participation and learning outcomes include infection with

Granuloma formation is a key host immune response generated to confine invading pathogens and limit extensive host damage. It consists of an accumulation of host immune cells around a pathogen. This host response has been extensively studied in the context of inflammatory diseases. However, there is much less known about Th2-type granulomas generated in response to parasitic worms. Based on in vitro data, innate immune cells within the granuloma are thought to immobilize and kill parasites but also act to repair damaged tissue. Understanding this dual function is key. The two billion people an
