Pituitary Abscess Syndrome in Ruminants: Nine Cases.

Pituitary abscess syndrome (PAS) is a rare neurological disorder, typically associated with progressive dysfunction of the cerebrum and brainstem. Reporting PAS in ruminants is essential to broaden the global veterinary understanding of this condition. The present study describes the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, microbiological, and pathological findings of nine ruminant cases diagnosed with PAS. Neurological signs were the most prominent clinical manifestations and included altered mentation, tongue hypotonia, nystagmus, blindness, ear ptosis, circling, facial hypoalgesia, head pres

Cognitive simulation along with neural adaptation explain effects of suggestions: a novel theoretical framework.

Hypnosis is an effective intervention with proven efficacy that is employed in clinical settings and for investigating various cognitive processes. Despite their practical success, no consensus exists regarding the mechanisms underlying well-established hypnotic phenomena. Here, we suggest a new framework called the Simulation-Adaptation Theory of Hypnosis (SATH). SATH expands the predictive coding framework by focusing on (a) redundancy elimination in generative models using intrinsically generated prediction errors, (b) adaptation due to amplified or prolonged neural activity, and (c) using

Development and Validation of a Kinematically Accurate Upper-Limb Exoskeleton Digital Twin for Stroke Rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation robotics combined with virtual reality using head-mounted displays enable naturalistic, immersive, and motivating therapy for people after stroke. There is growing interest in employing digital twins in robotic neurore-habilitation, e.g., in telerehabilitation for virtual coaching and monitoring, as well as in immersive virtual reality applications. However, the kinematic matching of the robot's visualization with the real robot movements is hardly validated, potentially affecting the users' experience while immersed in the virtual environment due to a visual-proprioceptive mism

Reaction of human walking to transient block of vision: analysis in the context of indirect, referent control of motor actions.

Human locomotion may result from monotonic shifts in the referent position, R, of the body in the environment. R is also the spatial threshold at which muscles can be quiescent but are activated depending on the deflection of the current body configuration Q from R. Shifts in R are presumably accomplished with the participation of proprioceptive and visual feedback and responsible for transferring stable body balance (equilibrium) from one place in the environment to another, resulting in rhythmic activity of multiple muscles by a central pattern generator (CPG). We tested predictions of this

Probing the Effect of Acidosis on Tether-Mode Mechanotransduction of Proprioceptors.

Proprioceptors are low-threshold mechanoreceptors involved in perceiving body position and strain bearing. However, the physiological response of proprioceptors to fatigue- and muscle-acidosis-related disturbances remains unknown. Here, we employed whole-cell patch-clamp recordings to probe the effect of mild acidosis on the mechanosensitivity of the proprioceptive neurons of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) in mice. We cultured neurite-bearing parvalbumin-positive (Pv+) DRG neurons on a laminin-coated elastic substrate and examined mechanically activated currents induced through substrate deformatio

Clinical Diagnosis of Rhabdomyolysis without Myoglobinuria or Electromyographic Abnormalities in a Dog.

A 2-year-old female neutered Old German Shepherd was presented for acute non-ambulatory tetraparesis. Upon presentation to the emergency department, hematology and biochemical blood tests revealed no abnormalities aside from mildly elevated C-reactive protein levels (22.5 mg/L, reference range 0.0-10.0) and immeasurable creatine kinase (CK) activity. Neurological evaluation the next day revealed ambulatory tetraparesis, general proprioceptive deficits, mild ataxia and dubious diffuse myalgia. Withdrawal reflexes were weak on both thoracic and pelvic limbs. The CK was determined to be significa

Molecular Organization and Patterning of the Medulla Oblongata in Health and Disease.

The medulla oblongata, located in the hindbrain between the pons and the spinal cord, is an important relay center for critical sensory, proprioceptive, and motoric information. It is an evolutionarily highly conserved brain region, both structural and functional, and consists of a multitude of nuclei all involved in different aspects of basic but vital functions. Understanding the functional anatomy and developmental program of this structure can help elucidate potential role(s) of the medulla in neurological disorders. Here, we have described the early molecular patterning of the medulla dur

Motor and somatosensory degenerative myelopathy responsive to pantothenic acid in piglets.

This report describes 2 events of degenerative myelopathy in 4- to 27-day-old piglets, with mortality rates reaching 40%. Sows were fed rations containing low levels of pantothenic acid. Piglets presented with severe depression, weakness, ataxia, and paresis, which were more pronounced in the pelvic limbs. No significant gross lesions were observed. Histologically, there were degeneration and necrosis of neurons in the spinal cord, primarily in the thoracic nucleus in the thoracic and lumbar segments, and motor neurons in nucleus IX of the ventral horn in the cervical and lumbar intumescence.

Sex differences in cervical spinal cord and spinal canal development in Thoroughbred horses.

Cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy (CVSM), a common cause of cervical spinal cord compression, is a neurological disease characterized by general proprioceptive ataxia and weakness of hindlimbs that tends to develop in young adult Thoroughbred horses. Although male horses seem to be at increased risk for CVSM, the mechanism for the occurrence of sex differences in the prevalence of CVSM is still poorly understood. Hence, we hypothesized that sex differences in the development of cervical spinal cord and spinal canal would affect the development of CVSM. This study aimed to evaluate sex dif

Somatic experiencing - effectiveness and key factors of a body-oriented trauma therapy: a scoping literature review.

BACKGROUND: The body-oriented therapeutic approach Somatic Experiencing® (SE) treats post-traumatic symptoms by changing the interoceptive and proprioceptive sensations associated with the traumatic experience. Filling a gap in the landscape of trauma treatments, SE has attracted growing interest in research and therapeutic practice, recently. OBJECTIVE: To date, there is no literature review of the effectiveness and key factors of SE. This review aims to summarize initial findings on the effectiveness of SE and to outline method-specific key factors of SE. METHOD: To gain a first overview o

Quantitative study on the biomechanical mechanism of sacroiliac joint subluxation: A finite element study.

The biomechanical mechanism of sacroiliac joint pain caused by sacroiliac joint subluxation is still unclear. And the purpose of this study is to elucidate the mechanism. In the present study, a finite element model of female lumbar spine-pelvis-femur was established. To simulate the sacroiliac joint subluxation quantitatively, the left ilium was shifted ±1, ±2, and ±3 mm along each axis, respectively. The stress and strain of articular surfaces and ligaments between the sacroiliac joint subluxation model and the normal model were compared. When the left ilium shifted along the positive direct

Incidental diagnosis of a spindle cell type gastrointestinal stromal tumor in a dog with ethylene glycol intoxication.

A 6-year-old castrated male American Pit Bull Terrier dog was presented for evaluation of acute onset of tonic-clonic seizures, anorexia, and vomiting. On physical examination, neurologic signs, such as generalized proprioceptive ataxia, salivation, circling to the right, and absent patellar reflexes bilaterally, were noted. A complete blood cell count revealed mild hemoconcentration and an inflammatory leukogram, while a chemistry panel showed severe azotemia, marked hypochloremia, and a severe titrational metabolic acidosis, suggesting possible ethylene glycol intoxication. However, an irreg

Does the transcranial direct current stimulation improve dual-task postural control in young healthy adults?

Some studies have suggested that postural balance improved after a single session of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), whereas others have found minimal, if any, effects on postural performance. To address the issue of replication in tDCS studies, we re-tested the anodal tDCS effects of left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex while performing a dual-task by increasing the attentional demands associated with more challenging proprioceptive conditions. Twenty-four young adults (mean age: 21.3 ± 1.2 years) were randomly divided into two groups (a "real tDCS" vs. a "sham tDCS" group) wer

Astragaloside IV improves neurobehavior and promotes hippocampal neurogenesis in MCAO rats though BDNF-TrkB signaling pathway.

Astragaloside IV (AST) as the main active ingredient of Astragalus membranaceus. Clinical and laboratory-based studies have demonstrated the effects of AST on cerebral protection and angiogenesis after ischemia stroke. In addition, several reports investigated the effect of AST on proliferation of neural stem cells. The current study was aimed to evaluate the influence of AST on neurogenesis in hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) of MCAO rats and to explore the possible mechanisms. In this study, the neurobehavioral tests (Ludmila Belayev 12-point scoring, Screen test, fore limb placing test) had b

Vestibular function in severe GH deficiency due to an inactivating mutation in the GH-releasing hormone receptor gene.

PURPOSE: Body balance involves the vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive systems. IGF-I is a GH-dependent key factor in the development and postnatal differentiation of the inner ear in mice and men, but its role in the vestibular function in adult humans is unknown. We have previously described a cohort of individuals with severe isolated GH deficiency (IGHD) caused by a mutation in the GHRH receptor (GHRHR) gene. These individuals complain of dizziness, exhibit mild sensorineural loss, but have normal postural balance, without increase in falls risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate th

Nonpharmacological, nonsurgical treatments for freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review.

Freezing of gait is a disabling phenomenon that appears in a substantial number of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients as the disease evolves. It is considered to be one of the most relevant contributing factors to worsening of quality of life. Current pharmacological or surgical treatment options have limited efficacy. Thus, alternative nonpharmacological/nonsurgical approaches have emerged in recent years in an attempt to improve quality of life in PD. This systematic review summarizes studies of such therapies over the past 5 years. Thirty-five studies were evaluated by use of a qualitative e

Temporal but not spatial dysmetria relates to disease severity in FA.

Friedreich's ataxia (FA) is an inherited disease that causes degeneration of the nervous system. Features of FA include proprioceptive and cerebellar deficits leading to impaired muscle coordination and, consequently, dysmetria in force and time of movement. The aim of this study is to characterize dysmetria and its association to disease severity. Also, we examine the neural mechanisms of dysmetria by quantifying the EMG burst area, duration, and time-to-peak of the agonist muscle. Twenty-seven individuals with FA and 13 healthy controls (HCs) performed the modified Functional Ataxia Rating S

Muscle spindle reinnervation using transplanted embryonic dorsal root ganglion cells after peripheral nerve transection in rats.

OBJECTIVES: Muscle spindles are proprioceptive receptors in the skeletal muscle. Peripheral nerve injury results in a decreased number of muscle spindles and their morphologic deterioration. However, the muscle spindles recover when skeletal muscles are reinnervated with surgical procedures, such as nerve suture or nerve transfer. Morphological changes in muscle spindles by cell transplantation procedure have not been reported so far. Therefore, we hypothesized that transplantation of embryonic sensory neurons may improve sensory neurons in the skeletal muscle and reinnervate the muscle spindl

Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors Revert Axonal Dystrophy in Friedreich's Ataxia Mouse Model.

Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by an unstable GAA repeat expansion within intron 1 of the FXN gene and characterized by peripheral neuropathy. A major feature of FRDA is frataxin deficiency with the loss of large sensory neurons of the dorsal root ganglia (DRG), namely proprioceptive neurons, undergoing dying-back neurodegeneration with progression to posterior columns of the spinal cord and cerebellar ataxia. We used isolated DRGs from a YG8R FRDA mouse model and C57BL/6J control mice for a proteomic study and a primary culture of sensory neurons from DRG to
