A surgical ankle sprain pain model in the rat: effects of morphine and indomethacin.

Ankle sprain is a frequent injury in humans that results in pain, swelling and difficulty in walking on the affected side. Currently a suitable animal model resembling human ankle sprain is lacking. Here, we describe an animal ankle sprain model induced by ankle ligament injury (ALI) in rats. Cutting combinations of the lateral ankle ligament complex produced pain, edema and difficulty of weight bearing, thereby mimicking severe (grade III) ankle sprain in humans. Analgesic compounds, morphine and indomethacin, significantly reversed the reduced weight bearing, thus indicating that reduction o

The effect of lateral ankle sprain on dorsiflexion range of motion, posterior talar glide, and joint laxity.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVE: Assess range of motion, posterior talar glide, and residual joint laxity following ankle sprain in a population of athletes who have returned to unrestricted activity. BACKGROUND: Lateral ankle sprains occur frequently in athletic populations and the reinjury rate may be as high as 80%. In an effort to better understand risk factors for reinjury, the sequelae to injury in a sample of college athletes were assessed. METHODS AND MEASURES: Twelve athletes with a history of lateral ankle sprain within the last 6 months and who had returned to sport

Gender differences in work-related injury/illness: analysis of workers compensation claims.

BACKGROUND: Risk of work-related injuries/illnesses among females has not been well documented. This study compares compensable work-related injuries/illnesses between females and males across all major industrial sectors and occupations using a state-managed Workers Compensation database. METHODS: Incidence rates were calculated by dividing the number of compensable injuries/illnesses among West Virginia Workers Compensation claimants by the total number of female and male workers in each specific industry class (based on SIC codes). Gender-specific denominators for occupations were estimate

A randomized controlled trial of a passive accessory joint mobilization on acute ankle inversion sprains.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Passive joint mobilization is commonly used by physical therapists as an intervention for acute ankle inversion sprains. A randomized controlled trial with blinded assessors was conducted to investigate the effect of a specific joint mobilization, the anteroposterior glide on the talus, on increasing pain-free dorsiflexion and 3 gait variables: stride speed (gait speed), step length, and single support time. SUBJECTS: Forty-one subjects with acute ankle inversion sprains (<72 hours) and no other injury to the lower limb entered the trial. METHODS: Subjects were random

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for acute ankle sprains.

We conducted a randomized double-blind study of 32 subject with acute ankle sprains to compare treatment with hyperbaric oxygen at 2 atmospheres absolute pressure (N = 16) (treatment group) with treatment with air at 1.1 atmosphere absolute pressure (N = 16) (control group) in a hyperbaric chamber. Each group received three treatments at their respective pressures: one for 90 minutes and two for 60 minutes each. Mean age, severity grade, and time to treatment (treatment group, 34.3 +/- 6.3 hours; control group, 32.6 +/- 4.6 hours) were similar in both groups. Joint function measured by a funct

Clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging in the assessment of ankle sprains treated with an orthosis.

This is a prospective clinical study of treatment of ankle sprains with an ankle brace that permits ankle dorsiflexion and plantarflexion of 20 degrees, but limits inversion and eversion for 6 weeks. The ankle brace is followed by physiotherapy for another 6 weeks. Thirty patients were evaluated with clinical examination and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging before treatment and after 12 weeks of treatment. MR imaging revealed acute tears in the anterior talofibular ligament in all 30 ankles (100%) and tears in the calcaneofibular ligament in 25 of 30 ankles (83%). At 12 weeks after injury, MR e
