Measuring hip outcomes: common scales and checklists.

INTRODUCTION: Assessing the outcomes of patients following surgical interventions is a challenging task. Traditionally the end results of joint replacement were based on morbidity/mortality rates and operative complications. The modern approach to outcomes following Orthopaedic surgery has shifted from the success or failure of implants towards patient satisfaction and the quality of life achieved. The aim of this paper was to identify and analyse the common scoring systems present in the medical literature for evaluating outcomes after hip interventions. METHODS: A pub-med search was perform

The discriminative stimulus properties of self-administered ethanol are mediated by GABA(A) and NMDA receptors in rats.

RATIONALE: The neurobiological systems that mediate the discriminative stimulus effects of self-administered drugs are largely unknown. The present study examined the discriminative stimulus effects of self-administered ethanol. METHODS: Rats were trained to discriminate ethanol (1 g/kg, IP) from saline on a two-lever drug discrimination task with sucrose (10% w/v) reinforcement. Test sessions were conducted with ethanol (0 or 10% v/v) added to the sucrose reinforcement to determine if self-administered ethanol would interact with the discriminative stimulus effects of investigator-administer

Temporal fusion and heatmap regression for precise left ventricular parameter measurement in echocardiographic parasternal long-axis videos.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular geometric parameters are critical for diagnosing and prognosticating cardiovascular diseases. Currently, most measurement techniques rely on two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), where an end-diastolic (ED) frame from the parasternal long-axis (PLAX) view is selected, and key points on the interventricular septum (IVS), left ventricular internal dimension (LVID), and left ventricular posterior wall (LVPW) are identified. However, using a single frame often fails to capture the entire structure of the IVS and LVPW, especially when complex anatomical

Safety, Feasibility, and Efficacy of Immersive Virtual Reality Training With a Body Weight Support System for Patients With Extrapyramidal Disorders: A Pilot Case Series Study.

Background Extrapyramidal disorders, including Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy, and progressive supranuclear palsy, are commonly associated with balance disabilities and an increased risk of falls. Therefore, continuous balance training is important for maintaining quality of life. Recently, rehabilitation using virtual reality (VR) has been introduced; however, most studies have focused on non-immersive VR. In addition, there have been no reports of immersive VR (IVR) training being applied to patients with extrapyramidal disorders. Therefore, we developed a safe, task-oriented s

SwinCross: Cross-modal Swin transformer for head-and-neck tumor segmentation in PET/CT images.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy (RT) combined with cetuximab is the standard treatment for patients with inoperable head and neck cancers. Segmentation of head and neck (H&N) tumors is a prerequisite for radiotherapy planning but a time-consuming process. In recent years, deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) have become the de facto standard for automated image segmentation. However, due to the expensive computational cost associated with enlarging the field of view in DCNNs, their ability to model long-range dependency is still limited, and this can result in sub-optimal segmentation performanc

Communication Strategies to Improve Child Participation in Triadic Consultations Within Healthcare Settings: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Children under 18 are recognised as key stakeholders in healthcare and possess the right to actively participate in decisions regarding their care. Despite this, they are frequently relegated to passive roles during triadic healthcare consultations involving healthcare providers (HCPs), caregivers, and children. Enhancing child participation requires effective communication strategies; however, numerous barriers persist, including healthcare provider dominance and parental interference. This review aims to explore and identify effective communication strategies employed by health

Tat-NTS peptide protects neurons against cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury via ANXA1 SUMOylation in microglia.

Rationale: Recent studies indicate that microglial activation and the resulting inflammatory response could be potential targets of adjuvant therapy for ischemic stroke. Many studies have emphasized a well-established function of Annexin-A1 (ANXA1) in the immune system, including the regulation of microglial activation. Nevertheless, few therapeutic interventions targeting ANXA1 in microglia for ischemic stroke have been conducted. In the present study, Tat-NTS, a small peptide developed to prevent ANXA1 from entering the nucleus, was utilized. We discovered the underlying mechanism that Tat-N

Organelles storing Ca 2+ in the brain cells: New druggable targets in neurodegenerative diseases.

Several lines of evidence suggest that targeting dysfunctional calcium (Ca 2+ )-storing organelles and their defective connections may represent a promising therapeutic strategy counteracting neurodegeneration. Dysfunction in these compartments converges to promote oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum stress, energy failure, autophagy blockade or hyperactivation, and progressive neurodegeneration. Within the intracellular scenario, several dysfunctional organelles have been characterized in terms of their capability to hijack Ca 2+ signaling during neurodegeneration to deadly impact on neuronal

Seeing the invisible: practical strategies to maximize the clinical impact of photon-counting CT in abdominal imaging.

Photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) represents a major technological advance, transforming abdominal imaging from morphology-based assessment to a platform that integrates spectral and quantitative information. Unlike conventional energy-integrating detector CT, PCD-CT directly converts X-ray photons into electrical signals, allowing inherent spectral imaging, improved spatial resolution, and enhanced dose efficiency. These characteristics enable flexible retrospective reconstruction, including virtual monoenergetic imaging and material decomposition, which can be tailored to

Scalable discovery of spatial multicellular patterns via neighborhood-to-sequence transformation.

Mining multi-cellular spatial patterns associated with biological events from high-resolution spatial omics data remains a fundamental challenge. While current computational methods have advanced from pairwise associations to identifying higher-order spatial domains, they often lack the granularity to resolve subtle local architectural shifts or the statistical framework to quantify condition-specificity. Here, we present FDPMining (Frequent and Distinctive spatial Patterns Mining), a computational framework that reformulates the biological problem of pattern discovery into a scalable data min

Compact magnet design for magnetic resonance: A system-aware overview of optimization strategies, manufacturing technologies, and system-level trade-offs.

Compact permanent-magnet systems are key enablers of portable and application-specific magnetic resonance (MR), but their design is inherently multi-objective: field strength and homogeneity must be balanced against size, weight, sample accessibility, manufacturability, thermal stability, and the requirements of the surrounding MR instrumentation. This article provides a system-aware overview of compact magnet design, linking established principles of magnet topology, magnetic materials, and shimming with emerging manufacturing technologies and numerical optimization strategies.
