An integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis reveals hepatic physiological responses of Perca fluviatilis to heat stress.

Heat stress negatively affects the growth and health of fish. In this study, Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) were exposed to control (18°C, CK) and heat stress (25°C, HS) conditions. Using liver transcriptomics and metabolomics in conjunction with physiological and biochemical indicators, we investigated the mechanisms underlying their thermal response. The results revealed that heat stress in P. fluviatilis led to liver cell damage, characterized by vacuolar degeneration and inflammatory cell infiltration. Heat stress caused a fluctuating decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, a

Unlocking the Functional Value of European-Originated Chrysanthemum Hybrids: Phytochemical and Bioactivity Assessment.

Chrysanthemums are appreciated not only for their ornamental and medicinal attributes but also as edible plants long incorporated into teas, infusions, and culinary traditions. Yet, hybrid cultivars specifically adapted to European growing conditions remain poorly characterized with respect to their medicinal potential. In this study, we investigated the phytochemical composition, antioxidant properties, and enzyme-inhibitory activities of inflorescences of four field-grown Chrysanthemum × morifolium 'Donna' × C. rubellum 'Clara Curtis' hybrids of European origin (CD 7, DC 19, DC 26, CD 46). Genetic dissection of cold tolerance across developmental stages in sorghum reveals stage-specific haplotypes and potential trade-offs.

Cold tolerance in sorghum is largely stage- and environment-specific yet partially shared genetic control allows improvement across developmental stages with mostly modest, trait-specific trade-offs. Cold tolerance is a major constraint to sorghum production in temperate environments, and its improvement is therefore a key breeding objective. However, cold tolerance varies across developmental stages and environments, and selection based on stage-specific phenotypes may overlook shared genetic components. We analysed a diversity panel of 394 sorghum genotypes evaluated across 10 environments r

Assessment of leaf-litter invertebrate biodiversity using high throughput sequencing.

Leaf litter ecosystems and their fauna are largely understudied, despite their critical ecological roles. Here, we investigate challenges associated with estimating biodiversity in terrestrial leaf litter. Current methodologies for biodiversity assessment are fraught with limitations; amongst the most significant is a decline in taxonomic expertise, complicating the process of species identification and the significant costs associated with species-level morphological identifications. DNA barcoding employs molecular markers to identify animal species, and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c ox

Cross-ecosystem subsidies drive CO2 flux rates in a coastal ecotone.

Ecotones and the steep environmental gradients they represent are often hotspots of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Consumer activities can mediate ecosystem functions, including decomposition in these hotspots. For example, cross-ecosystem subsidies of marine macrophyte wrack support diverse, productive intertidal food webs on temperate sandy beaches creating hotspots of organic matter processing that are highly vulnerable to growing disturbance threats. As a proxy for wrack decomposition rates, we compared the CO2 flux from the biologically active high tide strandline of bare interti

Metabolomics identifies tissue-specific trends in butter clams (Saxidomus gigantea) across a subarctic fjord-type estuarine system.

Across the Circumpolar North, harvesting of marine shellfish resources is vital for continued subsistence, recreational, and commercial lifestyles. However, estuarine and intertidal systems of Southcentral Alaska experience landscape-scale challenges due to variable physical characteristics, freshwater discharge, water quality, food availability, and nutritional quality. Additionally, findings in more temperate environments may not be entirely applicable to the subarctic. The continued sustainability of this resource depends largely on our ability to understand and adapt to environmental chall

Endovascular thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke: evolving patient selection, procedural strategies, and adjunctive therapies.

Endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) has transformed the treatment of acute ischemic stroke caused by large-vessel occlusion; however, its expanding indications require increasingly precise patient selection and procedural execution. This mini-review summarizes contemporary issues in EVT that go beyond the original early-window anterior-circulation paradigm. Current evidence supports the use of EVT for selected anterior-circulation large-vessel occlusion, late-window stroke, large-core infarction, and basilar artery occlusion, while more marginal scenarios-including a very low Alberta Stroke Progra

The moisture dynamics in arid Central Asia over the last 47,000 years: Insights from the speleothem record.

Water resources are crucial for the survival and development of human societies in arid Central Asia. However, our understanding of regional hydroclimate variability and moisture dynamics remains limited. Here, we present a precisely dated, high-resolution speleothem δ18O record from caves in northern Uzbekistan that reconstructs changes in precipitation δ18O over the last 47,000 years. During the glacial interval, relatively low speleothem δ18O values align with precipitation isotope records from high northern latitudes. The close correspondence between the Uzbekistan record and Greenland ice

Opposite Fates Under Warming: Climatic Suitability, Niche Divergence and Phenological Exposure of Riptortus pedestris and Nezara viridula in Soybean.

The bean bug, Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius), and the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), are important pod-sucking pests of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. Their feeding on pods and developing seeds induces soybean staygreen symptoms and causes severe yield losses. To assess their future damage risk, we integrated MaxEnt, PCA env and a phenological matching index (PMI) using global occurrence records, bioclimatic variables and soybean phenology data. Under current climatic conditions, R. pedestris exhibited a predominantly temperate East Asian distribution, with suitable areas ex

Novel Arctic colonization origin of the Arctic lineage in Phyllodoce (Ericaceae).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Arctic flora is widely considered evolutionarily young, reflecting the emergence of unprecedentedly cold environments during the late Pliocene-early Pleistocene transition. Although many Arctic plants are thought to be derived from temperate alpine ancestors, the historical relationship between high-latitude occupancy and lineage divergence remains unclear. Specifically, it remains unclear whether Arctic lineages originated from ancestors that already occupied high-latitude regions before the Arctic environment formed or originated through colonization after the Arctic

Molecular and biological characterization of a newly discovered Kayfunavirus bacteriophage targeting multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli from swine feces.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli infections and their biofilms in swine and swine farms are a major concern due to their impact on animal health, economic losses, and the spread of antibiotic resistance. There is also increasing concern about the potential transmission of antibiotic resistance from animals to humans. To address these issues, alternative strategies to control E. coli infections are being explored, with bacteriophage (phage) therapy emerging as a promising approach. In this study, Escherichia phage vECPPW10 was isolated and characterized. Genomic analysis revealed a 40

Transcriptome and proteome of ovarian tissues revealed the differences in the ovaries of dairy goats during the breeding and non-breeding seasons.

Dairy goats represent a crucial species within global dairy livestock. In temperate regions with distinct seasons, dairy goats exhibit reduced reproductive activity under long photoperiod conditions-a phase termed the non-breeding season. This poses a significant challenge to sustaining year-round goat milk production. As the pivotal organ for reproduction, the molecular regulatory mechanisms of the ovary in seasonal breeding remain incompletely characterized. This study investigated the variations in gonadotropin levels in dairy goats across breeding and non-breeding seasons, alongside an eva

Automatic Generation of Density-Fitting Auxiliary Basis Sets for All-Electron Dirac-Kohn-Sham Calculations.

In this study, we present a general workflow that enables the automatic generation of auxiliary density basis sets for all elements of the periodic table (from H to Og) to facilitate the general applicability of relativistic Dirac-Kohn-Sham calculations. It is an important tool for the accurate description of relativistic effects, including spin-orbit coupling, in molecules containing heavy elements. The latter are very important in various fields, ranging from catalysis to quantum technologies. The automatic generation algorithm is based on an even-tempered scheme inspired by a previous work
